In a different line of research, dissimilation has been argued to have its seeds in the phonetics of sound change, restricted by the same vocal tract constraints involved in speech production and perception (Ohala 1981 et seq.). -
Chapter One Phonetic Change
CHAPTERONE PHONETICCHANGE The investigation of the nature and the types of changes that affect the sounds of a language is the most highly developed area of the study of language change. The term sound change is used to refer, in the broadest sense, to alterations in the phonetic shape of segments and suprasegmental features that result from the operation of phonological process es. The pho- netic makeup of given morphemes or words or sets of morphemes or words also may undergo change as a by-product of alterations in the grammatical patterns of a language. Sound change is used generally to refer only to those phonetic changes that affect all occurrences of a given sound or class of sounds (like the class of voiceless stops) under specifiable phonetic conditions . It is important to distinguish between the use of the term sound change as it refers tophonetic process es in a historical context , on the one hand, and as it refers to phonetic corre- spondences on the other. By phonetic process es we refer to the replacement of a sound or a sequenceof sounds presenting some articulatory difficulty by another sound or sequence lacking that difficulty . A phonetic correspondence can be said to exist between a sound at one point in the history of a language and the sound that is its direct descendent at any subsequent point in the history of that language. A phonetic correspondence often reflects the results of several phonetic process es that have affected a segment serially . Although phonetic process es are synchronic phenomena, they often have diachronic consequences. -
CONNECTED SPEECH IPA Symbols Represent the Correct Pronunciation
CONNECTED SPEECH IPA symbols represent the correct pronunciation of single words or segments of speech. However, we use single words or segments in isolation only occasionally. E.g., we can say “ah!” /ɑː/ to express surprise, or “sh!” /ʃ/ if we want to tell somebody to be quiet. Most commonly we use segments of speech or single words in a sequence, to form phrases or sentences. The sound “ah!” /ɑː/, for example, is likely to be found in whole sentences, to express: - surprise (“Ah, there you are!”) - pleasure (“Ah, this coffee is good.”) - admiration or sympathy (“Ah well, better luck next time.”) - when you disagree with somebody (“Ah, but that may not be true.”) In fact, we commonly use language in continuous, connected speech. Connected speech means speech produced without pauses. A consequence of connected speech is that single segments of speech are influenced by neighbouring segments (that is to say, speech sounds that come before and after them), and may slightly change their place or manner of articulation, or may sometimes totally disappear. Therefore the pronunciation of an isolated word may be different from the pronunciation of the same word in connected speech. These changes fall into two main types: assimilation and elision. ASSIMILATION In assimilation, one sound becomes phonetically similar to an adjacent sound. For example, the two words this and shop in isolation are pronounced - this /ðɪs/ - shop /ʃɒp/. In rapid speech, when the two words are pronounced together, the sound /s/ in this is influenced by the following initial sound and changes to /ʃ/. What we actually hear is: - this shop /ðɪʃʃɒp/. -

EVALUATING AN INSTRUMENT FOR ASSESSING CONNECTED SPEECH PERFORMANCE USING FACETS ANALYSIS YOON AH SEONG University of Hawai‘i at M ānoa ABSTRACT In the area of English pronunciation teaching, connected speech is increasingly being introduced and covered in pronunciation textbooks (e.g., Hagen, 2000; Weinstein, 2001). Connected speech is a phenomenon in spoken language that collectively includes phonological processes such as reduction, elision, intrusion, assimilation, and contraction. Several research studies have shown that connected speech instruction can help learners to more easily comprehend rapid speech used by native speakers (e.g., Brown & Hilferty, 2006; Celce-Murcia, Brinton, & Goodwin, 1996; Matsuzawa, 2006). Moreover, use of connected speech features can make learners sound more comprehensible and natural with less marked foreign accent (Brown & Kondo-Brown, 2006a; Dauer & Browne, 1992). However, compared to the growing connected speech literature regarding what forms to teach and how, there seems to be very little information on how to assess connected speech especially in terms of production. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a new test of connected speech performance within the context of an English study abroad program. The multi-faceted Rasch software FACETS was used to examine the effectiveness of the test instrument. The analyses used data from two administrations, a pretest and a posttest, and examined the relationships between examinee scores and various aspects of the testing situation (i.e., facets). The four facets investigated in this study were: (a) the examinees, (b) items, (c) raters, and (d) the rater L1 background. The results indicated that assessing the production of certain connected speech forms using this type of test instrument has potential. -

Connected speech in Romanian: Exploring sound change through an ASR system Ioana Chitorana, Ioana Vasilescub, Bianca Vieruc, Lori Lamelb a Université Paris Diderot and Laboratoire de Phonétique et Phonologie (UMR 7018) b LIMSI CNRS c Vocapia Research Abstract This study explores the hypothesis that traces of sound change can be found in connected speech processes as synchronic variation. To test this hypothesis we study the variation in connected speech through the output of an ASR system (Adda-Decker and Lamel, 1999). The case study is the vowel alternation [e]–[ʌ] after labials, encountered in Romanian historically, as part of a relatively sporadic sound change with unclear conditioning, as well as synchronically, as a phenomenon commonly observed in continuous speech. The specific question we address is whether the synchronic phenomenon in Romanian continuous speech is simply the result of general vowel reduction, or may reflect the sound change, with its apparent sensitivity to a labial consonantal context. We focus on the prepositions [pe] ‘on’ and [de] ‘of’, chosen specifically for their status as function words, more prone to vowel reduction than lexical words. We compare the ASR system’s choice of two transcription variants and their respective contexts. The results of this comparison suggest that the synchronic variation is grounded in the historical sound change, thus motivating a future systematic study of controlled speech, to determine the exact role of segmental contextual factors. The main result is that the selection of transcription variants is significantly different for the two prepositions. This allows us to better understand the conditioning environment of the relevant sound change, and reveals the language-specific articulatory and co-articulatory settings and dynamic patterns that may have led to it, as they emerge and can be observed in continuous speech. -

Thoeny and Eunice Tong University of Hong Kong 1 Introduction This paper presents the phonemic inventory and phonology of Bimanese, a vastly understudied Austronesian language, with a focus on the Kolo dialect and the co-occurrence restrictions of sounds, consonantal and vowel combinations in words and their syllable structure. 1.1 Background Bimanese is classified as a Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian language and is spoken by the Mbojo people on Eastern Sumbawa Island in the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara. In Kolo Bimanese, there are prenasalized, implosive consonants, and homorganic consonant clusters, but there is a dispreference for closed syllables (Klamer 2002). 1.2 Fieldwork Research was conducted over a two-week period at the Mataram Lingua Franca Institute in Mataram, Indonesia. The study focuses on the data collected from recording sessions with one male and one female. Both are native speakers of Kolo Bimanese, who also speak Indonesian and English. We first confirmed the inventory of consonants and vowels found in the language, and then looked at all possible consonant and vowel combinations. Lapel microphone recordings of attested CV and CCV combinations, as well as isolated vowels with two separate consonants, were recorded. All consonants and vowels have been double confirmed by reading their respective spectrograms in Praat. 2 Phonemic Inventory Pulmonic consonants, non-pulmonic consonants, and vowels are presented in the following section. The study does not focus on stress. -

Iberian Spirantization as a Syllable Contact Process MARfA M. CARREIRA Department of Romance Languages and Literatures California Srare University This paper examines Spanish spirantization as a syllable contact phenomenon subject to the Syllable Preference Laws proposed by Murray and Venneman (1987). It proposes a rule that assigns the feature [+continuant] to a voiced obstruent, provided that a minimum sonority distance is maintained between the obstruent as a spirant and a preceding rhyme. Otherwise, the obstruent receives the specification [-continuant]' The minimum sonority difference between an onset and a preceding segment is subject to dialectal and stylistic variation, ranging from a distance of two, in spirantizing dialects, to a distance of seven, in dialects that show a preference for stops. This approach allows us to explain the range of variation inherent in Spanish spirantization as well as the right-environment conditions of Portuguese and Catalan spirantization. I. Introduction Spirantization in Spanish, the alternation between voiced obstruent stops and continuants, has been the subject of countless papers and discussions. Most analyses have accepted the facts in (1) as complete and representative of this phenomenon. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Dalam penelitian ini, ada 3 informan sebagai sampel dari desa Lemukih dan 3 informan sebagai sampel dari desa Dencarik. Semua informan dipilih berdasarkan seperangkat kriteria. Data yang diperoleh dikumpulkan berdasarkan empat instrumen, yaitu: peneliti, lembar observasi, panduan wawancara, daftar kata (swadesh dan nothofer). Penelitian ini juga menggunakan tiga teknik yaitu: observasi, pencatatan, dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, 1) terdapat 9 indikasi variasi fonologis, seperti; aphaeresis, syncope, apocope, prosthesis, epenthesis, paragoge, haplology, disimilasi, asimilasi. Variasi fonologis yang tidak ditemukan: fortifikasi lenition, unpacking, dan metathesis, 2) terdapat 4 indikasi variasi leksikal, seperti; variasi semasiologis, variasi onomasiologis, variasi formal dan variasi kontekstual. Ada 234 leksikon yang persis sama dan ada 112 leksikon yang memiliki kemiripan dari kedua dialek Lemukih dan Dencarik, bisa dijadikan bukti bahwa menyatukan dialek Lemukih dan Dencarik. Dan untuk leksikon yang berbeda ditemukan bahwa ada 322 leksikon yang dapat digolongkan sebagai leksikon yang membedakan kedua dialek Lemukih dan Dencarik. Kata Kunci: fitur leksikal, variasi leksikal, variasi fonologis Abstract This study aimed at analyzing the differences of Lemukih and Dencarik dialect in term of phonological and lexical variation. -

The notion assimilation is discussed, by many phoneticians and phonologists like Roach, Carr and many others, as a phonological process when there is a change of one sound into another because of adjacent segments. Assimilation has many types with different forms. It also has its own rules that constraint sounds and how a feature of a sound spreads to an adjacent sound. The aim of this paper is an attempt to provide an adequate background knowledge for those who are interested in this phonetic phenomenon. Keywords: (assimilation - speech – rules) 1.1 Assimilation: Overview Broadly speaking, Crystal (2011:39) states that assimilation means the effect that is expressed by one sound segment upon the production of another, so that the sounds become more similar. In this regard, Trask (2000:30) argues that the term assimilation is any syntagmatic change in which some sound seems more identical in nature to another sound in the same sequence, usually within one phonological word or phrase. Besides, Carr, (2008:16) assumes that assimilation is a process in which two, usually adjacent, segments appear more identical to each other. An instance of assimilation for place of articulation can be seen in sequences such as ten boys in 304 English, where the /n/ of ten seems to assimilate to the place of articulation of the following bilabial stop /tembɔɪz/. -
On the Treatment of Consonant Cluster Reduction
ON THE TREATMENT OF CONSONANT CLUSTER REDUCTION Young-Seok Kim In this paper we will consider a theory of Consonant Cluster Reduction (CCR) without deletion rules. Through its analysis of CCR and closely related phenome,1a in the phonology of Korean, this paper explains why CCR should be dealt with by a general convention which we shall refer to as Stray Erasure Principle. It will be shown that, though primarily based on the Korean language, this theory makes correct predic tions about similar phenomena in other typologically unrelated languages such as Menomini. 1. The Syllable Structure of Korean The phonemic inventory of Standard Korean comprises 9 (or 10) vowels and 21 consonants including glides. 1 At the phonetic level, only a limited number of con sonants (i.e. [p=], [t=], [k=], [1], [m], [n] and [IJ] are allowed in the syllable-final position because of Obstruent Neutralization. However, all the consonants can in principle occur both morpheme-initially2 and morpheme-finally provided we admit that there are some accidental gaps for some reason or other. True consonants can also occur before an on-glide y or w. The canonical syllable structure of Korean would then look like this: (1) ~ (C) (G) V (C) Since we do not find evidence supporting the syllable-internal hierarchical struc ture, we will take no account of the possibility of assigning G either to the onset (cf. B.-G. Lee 1982) or to the nucleus, which in turn is dominated by an upper node, namely the rime.
