I have transcribed this work from the many text files I found on the web into one Adobe Acrobat file, so that other researchers will be able to use and print this wonderful resource from their own computers more easily. The pages correspond with their original page numbers, so the Everyname Index which starts on page 391 is useable. However, this made formatting the pages a nightmare, so I did my best and tried not to worry about it. Enjoy! Paul Welcomer - 5/21/2001 1 OUTLINE HISTORY OF PENNSYLVANIA Chapter I Pages 9-11 The

ADRODDIAD BLYNYDDOL / ANNUAL REPORT 1959-60 FRANK WARD 1960001 Ffynhonnell / Source The late Mr Frank Ward, Torquay. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1959-60 Disgrifiad / Description The holograph manuscript of a proposed publication by Frank Ward on 'The Folklore of Welsh Lakes', together with a few relevant notes; a galley-proof of Frank Ward: The Lakes of Wales (London, 1931), and manuscript addenda; seventeen holograph and autograph letters and one telegram to Frank Ward from Wm. [William] Burdon Scott, Dublin, 1930, D. R. Jones, Caernarvon, 1931, T. Gwynn Jones, Bow Street, Cardiganshire, 1931-7, The National Library of Wales, 1935, The Milford Docks Company, 1955, Lowry Kirkby, Talsarnau, undated, and Molly Cathcart, Grosvenor Place [London], undated; and the score of a 'Nuptial Song. Sigh, Heart, Break not', composed by Kate A. Mellersh[?] to words by [John Byrne Leicester Warren,] 3rd Baron de Tabley (1835-95). A selection of printed books from a particularly extensive collection of material relating to folk-lore (Dept of Printed Books). The testator, whose volume The Lakes of Wales, published in 1931, is now difficult to obtain, was at one time a regular visitor to the Readers Room and this bequest is a reflection of his esteem for the Library. Apart from a number of books entirely devoted to folk-lore there are also several local histories, long since out of print, which contain much pertinent material for the folklorist. Most of the collection has considerably enriched the Duplicates Section, more especially because they were originally issued in very small editions and copies are now almost impossible to acquire.

  • Adroddiad Blynyddol 1947
ADRODDIAD BLYNYDDOL / ANNUAL REPORT 1946-47 J T EVANS 1947001 Ffynhonnell / Source The late the Reverend J T Evans, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1946-47 Disgrifiad / Description In December 1937, Rev J T Evans wrote to the Librarian stating that it was his intention to present to the National Library his file of Y Drych, the Welsh-American weekly newspaper, and other Welsh publications. Mr Evans, however, died in 1939 before he could carry out his intention. His widow felt that it was incumbent upon her to do so, but the outbreak of the World War in September made it inexpedient to transport the books and periodicals from the United States to this country. In order to safeguard the collection, the Librarian of the Public Library, Minneapolis, and his staff packed the material in boxes and stored it in the Public Library there. In June 1945, negotiations were started with a view to making arrangements for forwarding the boxes to Aberystwyth. It was not until December 1946, however, that the collection was delivered at the National Library. The collection consists mainly of an unbound file of Y Drych, 1889-1940, and bound and unbound volumes of Welsh and Welsh-American periodicals such as Y Cyfaill, 1852-1933, Y Traethodydd, 1813-18, The Cambrian, 1897-99, etc. (Dept of Printed Books) There are also a few books, nearly all of which were published in America and some of which are new to the Library (Dept of Prited Books). The Librarian is indebted, not only to Mrs Evans, but also to the Librarian of the Public Library, Minneapolis, and his colleague, Miss Lois M Jordan, Head of the Order Department, for the care which they took to safeguard the collection.

The earliest documentary record of it dates from 1595, but where that document was held gives a clue to the possible scenario of the house’s genesis half a century earlier. It seems likely that it was built as a dowry for the bride of Evan Lloyd of Rhiwgoch, the manor house of Trawsfynydd, and may therefore have been the birthplace of one of Merioneth’s most prominent citizens, Robert Lloyd, repeatedly MP and Sheriff throughout his long career in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Principal gentry families of North Wales were involved in its early fate, as it changed hands grouped with other nearby farms, often in connection with marriage. By the end of the seventeenth century it seems it had been swept up into the extensive Welsh holdings of the Parry family, some members being parish residents. Parry trustees sold Tyddyn Sais in the nineteenth century to form part, eventually, of the Wood estate in Trawsfynydd, acquired with wealth derived from Lancashire’s heavy industry.

  • The Role of Welsh-Language Journalism in Shaping the Construction of Welsh Identity and the National Character of Wales
The Role of Welsh-language Journalism in Shaping the Construction of Welsh Identity and the National Character of Wales Robert Glyn Môn Hughes A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). March 2017 What role does journalism play? It’s a central role. It’s part of the way in which we identify ourselves and understand ourselves. The written word. The spoken word. They are critical. Meri Huws Welsh Language Commissioner (Interview, August 2012) i ii Acknowledgements This project marks the culmination of six years of study and research. Numerous people have been key to making this happen over the period in question. These include Director of Studies Dr Rex Li who was always on hand to advise and assist. Supervisors Drs Guy Hodgson and Robert Graham were also keen to give welcome guidance. Special mention must be made of colleagues Jackie Newton (Programme Leader of Journalism) and Kate Heathman (Senior Lecturer in Journalism) who encouraged me when the going was tough, Sheena Streather (Academic Liaison Librarian in Aldham Robarts Library) who helped me track down hard-to-find items and staff at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth whose skill and assistance in finding various texts was much appreciated. Another special mention should be given to my late parents who installed the interest in Welsh matters and Welsh culture in general. Although born in Liverpool (which, some would say, is the ‘capital’ of North Wales if not all Wales), I was the first generation not to have been born in the country.
