Professor of Microbiology, John Curtin School of Medical Research, 1949 to 1967: Administrative and Domestic Arrangements Europe, July 1949 to February 1950 As described in the previous chapter, Sir Howard Florey had made arrangements for the first three professors appointed to the John Curtin School of Medical Research to meet him in Oxford early in August 1949. Adrien Albert (Medical Chemistry) was working in the Wellcome Laboratories in London and Hugh Ennor (Biochemistry) had come over from Melbourne. Bobbie and I arrived in England on 2 August. She stayed with my friend Cecil Hackett and his wife Beattie at Northwood, just out of London. I went up to Oxford and spent a very busy four days talking about the future of the School with my new colleagues (it was the first time that we had met) and with Florey. With the help of Florey©s colleague, Gordon Sanders (who later came out to Canberra for a few months to help us with the planning), among other things we decided on an H-shape for the JCSMR building, with the main laboratories on the south side of each wing, to avoid direct sunlight, and rooms for special facilities on the north side, with narrow passages, to make cluttering with equipment difficult. The spine of the H was reserved for School requirements, with the library on the top floor, a lecture theatre and seminar rooms, administrator©s offices and a tea-room on the ground floor, and stores on the bottom floor. Since there were no laboratories in Canberra at the time, the ANU had arranged with Burnet to make available two laboratories at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute until we were able to move into laboratories in Canberra. -

Barnett SUPA, Department of Physics, University of Strathclyde 4 February 2008 The James Scott Prize Lectureship was established in 1918 in memory of James Scott, a farmer at East Pittendreich, near Brechin, by the Trustees of his Bequest. This prize is awarded quadrennially for a lecture on the fundamental concepts of Natural Philosophy. This year’s award goes to Professor Stephen Barnett FRS FRSE, who is based in the Department of Physics at the University of Strathclyde. Professor Barnett is one of the world’s most eminent scientists in the field of Quantum Optics. A previous winner of the Institute of Physics’ Maxwell Medal, he is perhaps best known for his co-discovery of the Barnett-Pegg phase operator. This established the first formally correct approach for handling both angles and phase as descriptions within quantum systems. Still within quantum physics, Professor Barnett holds a number of patents relating to techniques for writing unbreakable codes. For a subject that is potentially beyond most people’s understanding, Professor Barnett is well known for presenting the counter-commonsense implications of quantum mechanics in an accessible and entertaining way, stripping the subject of its supporting mathematics and leaving only the essence of pure ideas. -

On 30 March, the 77 men who’d already leant their support met at what would be the Chemical Society’s first official meeting; at that meeting, Thomas Graham was unanimously elected to be the Society’s first president. The other main decision made at the 30 March meeting was on the system by which the Chemical Society would be organised: “That the ordinary members shall elect out of their own body, by ballot, a President, four Vice-Presidents, a Treasurer, two Secretaries, and a Council of twelve, four of Introduction whom may be non-resident, by whom the business of the Society shall be conducted.” At the first Annual General Meeting the following year, in March 1842, the Bye Laws were formally enshrined, and the ‘Duty of the President’ was stated: “To preside at all Meetings of the Society and Council. To take the Chair at all ordinary Meetings of the Society, at eight o’clock precisely, and to regulate the order of the proceedings. A Member shall not be eligible as President of the Society for more than two years in succession, but shall be re-eligible after the lapse of one year.” Little has changed in the way presidents are elected; they still have to be a member of the Society and are elected by other members. -

This article, written by some of the participants in that symposium, highlights the contributions that Jim Feast has made in the areas of ring-opening metathesis polymerisation, electroactive polymers and dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers. In particular, the ‘Durham route’ polyacetylene, prepared from a precursor polymer itself prepared by ROMP, paved the way for the work in the field of conducting and semi-conducting organic polymeric materials by Richard Friend and others. Curiosity-driven ‘Blue Sky’ Research: a threatened vital acvity? Sir John Cadogan Inaugural President of the Learned Society of Wales ‘One somemes finds what one is not looking for.’ Although this is a paper commissioned by the Learned Society of Wales (Appendix 1), the threat addressed spans the enre UK scienfic scene. In Wales, while Educaon is devolved, support of research through the Research Councils is not. This paper addresses funding in the laer category on the opmisc assumpon that the vital QR (Quality-Related) funding from the University Funding Councils via the educaon budget line will be protected. Disaster would otherwise ensue. However, the same arguments apply to both categories of funding.
