2015 Japanese Intensive Weekends at IPU New Zealand Tertiary Institute 2015 Japanese Intensive Weekends at IPU New Zealand Tertiary Institute In 2015 IPU New Zealand (formerly IPC Tertiary Institute) hosted close to 100 year 11, 12 and 13 students from 26 schools across New Zealand, at the Japanese Intensive Weekends. We thank the Sasakawa Foundation for their generous support in funding these events. Students made their way to Palmerston North (those travelling from afar were offered travel subsidies) for a full weekend of Japanese language and culture immersion, and got a taste of university student life at IPU New Zealand. These weekends were an excellent opportunity not only for students to build on their Japanese language and experience new Japanese customs, foods, and sports, but also to meet fellow learners of Japanese from IPU New Zealand and schools around NZ, and make friends with the native Japanese speakers studying at IPU New Zealand. Students enjoyed everything from 寿司 sushi, お好み焼き okonomiyaki, and even traditional Vietnamese cuisine making, 剣道 kendo, 対抗 taiko drum workshops, and 琴 koto (Japanese harp) and 三味線 shamisen (Japanese guitar- like instrument) performances, to 茶道 tea ceremony, Japanese sports, 書道 shodo (calligraphy), 折り紙 origami, and 甚平 jinbei/浴衣 yukata wearing. In the classrooms Japanese teachers さいとう先生 Saito Sensei and たにわき先 生 Taniwaki Sensei catered for students of all levels, from beginner level through to more advanced students, increasing students’ knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and Japanese social etiquette. Students also had the chance to experience other areas taught at IPU New Zealand, taking taster classes in TESOL (Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages), International Relations, and Mandarin Chinese. The Japanese Intensive Weekends were a great success, with many students coming to a second, and even a third weekend throughout the year. Several of the year 13 students who attended came away convinced that IPU New Zealand was the best option for them to pursue their Japanese studies, alongside TESOL and International Relations, and have since applied for enrolment in the Bachelor’s degree in 2016. Naenae College Naenae College Yearbook 2015 Naenae College 2015 Every year the spirit of Te Whanau Tahi continues to strengthen in the school. This culture is nurtured and feed daily by the staff and widely supported by students and has ripple effects well beyond the school gates. Principal’s Foreword for 2015 Magazine Every year the spirit of Te Whanau Tahi continues to strengthen in the school. This culture is nurtured and feed daily by the staff and widely supported by students and has ripple effects well beyond the school gates. It is a source of pride and it’s what gets me up in the mornings. We recently received the data back from the Prime Minister’s Youth Mental Health project. Students in schools throughout the country were surveyed. The data clearly shows our community to be in far better shape that the stereotypical image of Naenae in the heads of the uninformed. We sit significantly above the national average on all the positive indicators. We have higher than average levels of participation in sports and clubs and more positive belonging and relationships. Students are more interested and motived to learn. They value school outcomes, feel safer at school and going to and from school, are encouraged at home and in the community and enjoy positive student teacher relationships and encouragement at school. We were well below average on all the negative indicators; less depression, less anxiety, less bullying, less smoking, less drugs and alcohol and less truancy and lateness. This data is all very encouraging. It is fair to say that this was not the picture five years ago and we should take heart and be collectively proud of the progress made as a whole community.

Phone: 292 8205 administration@Paekākāriki.school.nz 2017 Paekākāriki School Home of the Barefoot Learner Term 2 Week 7 Kia Ora Tatou, This week we celebrated Support Staff Day. This is an annual event organised by the New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI). This year we're recognising and celebrating the true value of support staff, which is gaining momentum through the NZEI claims for pay equity. To date, negotiations over the support staff collective agreement have been disappointing and slow. However, the good news is the Government has committed to progressing pay equity in general, and has prioritised teacher aides in particular. Awesome effort from our students at Cross Country. There is hope. Aged care workers won 20 to 40 percent pay rises as part of their successful battle for pay equity.
