To help us take Waikanae School from great to even greater we are embarking on a journey to develop a new 'Strategy' for Waikanae School and we need YOUR help! Please visit the website where you will find information about how you can get involved. http://www.waikanae.school.nz/2191/pages/232-we-need-you

The information includes a description and timeline of the events/actions that we will be undertaking as well as some documentation that you may wish to read. In order to get as much input from as many people as possible we will be using a number of strategies. These include... A Community Survey (paper and digital options available). (From 18 May) Facilitated Staff Meetings. (17 May) Facilitated Community Meetings. (30 or 31May TBC) 3 x Community Sessions with Staff and BoT Members, one of which will be in town. (6,7,8 June) Feedback opportunities on draft document. (From 18 June) Final Launch. (5 July) Help us develop our ‘Waikanae Strategy’ and create our future!

You tell us! This Term’s Activity Fees will be emailed out to all families this week. Firstly, we send out an Invoice for each child. This means that larger families will get multiple Invoices (depending on the number of children attending Waikanae School). Secondly, the Invoices will be followed by a Family Statement (1 per family). The amounts for this Term’s Activity Fee per Syndicate are as follows

Syndicate Description Amount

Te Waharua Tahi Rooms 7,8,20 and 21 Basketball, Puppet Show, Mathletics, Discovery Time $24

Rooms 5,6 and 9 Basketball, Puppet Show, Discovery Time $16

Te Waharua Rua Rooms 1,2,3, and 4 Basketball, Puppet Show, Mathletics, $70 Swimming, Science

Te Aramoana Rooms 10,11,18 and 19 Basketball, Puppet Show, Mathletics, Arbour $26 Day, Anzac

Te Poutama Rooms 14,15 16 and 17 Basketball, Puppet Show, Trip, $63.00 Gymnastics, Musician

The Activity Fee is a compulsory payment which the school is able to insist on payment for. • Participation by students in Activity Fee funded activities is voluntary. • Any parent that does not want their child to participate in any of the Activity Fee funded activities must withdraw their child by notifying the office (in writing). The easiest way to do this is to email the office at this address [email protected]  Following notification of a student’s withdrawal, staff will ensure that an alternative programme is organised for the student or students concerned. The school fully understands that ‘cash flow’ is an issue for many families and as a result the school is completely willing and prepared for families to drip feed these accounts over time by setting up an Automatic Payment. The school suggests that something between $5 and $15 per week would resolve all debts owed and reduce the burden of larger payments on families. ASB 12-3157-0107950-00 Please use child’s name as a reference.

Importantly we do not have an issue with families being in debt as long as a suitable Automatic Payment is in operation to cover the debt over time. A special welcome to Mrs Liz Gordon who will be teaching in our third New Entrant start up class for 2018. Liz will be working in a fulltime capacity having taught at various levels in schools in the Marton and Fielding areas. We are very pleased to have Liz on staff for the remainder of this year and we look forward to the contribution that she will make to our school.

Our monthly Board meeting is being held next Monday 14 May at 7.30pm in the staffroom. All are welcome. Reports are available from the office after Friday 11 May.

The Term 2 policy reviews for parents include, Reporting to Parents. Parents are invited to visit the school website and complete the relevant review. Note that you are only reviewing the actual policies, not the supporting policies and procedures, most of which are reviewed separately at another time. See the review instructions on website. During the first ten days of the school holidays, 6 Waikanae staff travelled to for a cultural/language experience. There were two separate trips. The first was funded through the Confucius Institute and was targeted at Principals from the lower North Island, while the second was coordinated through our Asian Languages in Schools Programme with 4 of our teachers attending and Elizabeth Couchman leading. All staff visited schools and associated organisations and during their visits they met with students, teachers and education officials. As part of the teachers’ experience teachers visited our first ‘sister school’ Changzhou Longcheng Primary School. Changzhou Longcheng has 1756 students, 44 teaching classrooms and 140 teachers. Funding for both of these trips came from a variety of sources. I have included a copy of the Report to the BoT from Elizabeth Couchman the Teacher’s Trip Leader.

Kapiti Coast Teachers’ Trip to China, April 2018

“As a teacher, you could be forgiven for finding a language without an alphabet – where the same syllable can mean “mother”, “horse” or “curse”, depending on how you say it – just a little bit scary.” - Charlotte Ogilvie, British Council, 2015.

For the past two years, Asian Language Learning in Schools (ALLiS) funding has enabled 30 teachers from schools throughout the to take up this challenge, learning the Mandarin language alongside their students with the invaluable support of our Mandarin Language Assistants (MLAs). Our trip to China in April gave nine of them and me the opportunity to experience Chinese language and culture first hand. In addition to increasing language proficiency and cultural understanding for the four participating teachers from our school, other benefits for Waikanae School include formalising a sister school relationship and creating initial contacts for our future international student programme.

Language Proficiency Effective foreign language teaching entails immersing students in the target language in culturally authentic contexts. Highlighting cultural differences is an essential part of learning another language at primary school level, where language learning should provide positive cultural experiences, trigger curiosity and promote openness towards other cultures.

Our MLAs provide an up-to-date look at the Chinese language and culture, and this is particularly valued by teachers who are learning the language alongside their students. Visiting China, however, has brought both the language and the culture to life for the teachers. They have returned inspired, excited about sharing their new found knowledge with their students in contexts which can now be authentic and determined to continue with their own language learning.

Sister school relationship A highlight of the trip was our visit to the city of Changzhou, where we signed a memorandum of understanding with Longcheng Primary School. The envisaged cooperation between our schools as sister schools will see cultural exchange in the form of sharing professional development and cultural activities such as festivals through visits and through communication using technology.

Teachers are already planning to develop connections with English classes at Longcheng through email and skype. In addition to enhancing the effectiveness of their developing Mandarin language skills as a communication tool, enriching experiences such as these will help our children to become global citizens who understand and are accepting of cultural difference. International students Changzhou is a city of over 4 million people situated in the southern Jiangsu province of China, about 180 km northwest of Shanghai. Longcheng Primary School’s location in Changzhou is significant as part of a longstanding relationship between the city of Changzhou and the Kapiti Coast. This relationship is fondly described by Rose Hu (International Education Marketing Consultant for Kapiti College) and Vincent Yang (Director of the International Department of the Changzhou Education Bureau) as the “Changzhou Whanau”. Most of Kapiti College’s Chinese international students come from Changzhou as a result of this strong relationship.

Other schools on the Kapiti Coast are joining Kapiti College in developing sister school relationships in Changzhou, including Kenakena School, Paekakariki School and, as a result of our trip, Kapiti Primary School, Paraparaumu Beach School and Waikanae School. Our connection with Changzhou will be invaluable as we develop our own code of practice for accepting international students.
