This is an annual event organised by the New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI). This year we're recognising and celebrating the true value of support staff, which is gaining momentum through the NZEI claims for pay equity. To date, negotiations over the support staff collective agreement have been disappointing and slow. However, the good news is the Government has committed to progressing pay equity in general, and has prioritised teacher aides in particular. Awesome effort from our students at Cross Country. There is hope. Aged care workers won 20 to 40 percent pay rises as part of their successful battle for pay equity. Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa Ko Heretaunga te awa Ko Tararua nga pae maunga Ko Ngāti Pākeha te iwi Ko Richard tōku matua Ko Suzanne tōku whaea Ko Jennifer ratou ko John ko Judith ko Richard ko Joanna aku teina Ko Anaru ahau No rēira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa I was brought up in the Hutt Valley and went to Boulcott Primary and Hutt Valley High Schools. During my childhood the family went to England for 3 years, leaving New Zealand during my Standard 4 (Year 6) and returning half way through my Form 3 (Year 9) year. This proved a very enlightening experience and made me realise at a very young age what a very special country we live in! I developed a love of the outdoors and tramped and climbed extensively as a young man in the mountains and bush as a result of this trip to England. WHANAU My wife’s name is Marita and we have several tamariki and mokopuna. Unfortunately, our youngest son and his tamariki live in Kalgoorlie, Australia as he is involved in the mining industry there. The only way that we see them, apart from occasional trips to Kalgoorlie, is through Skype, a medium that I hate to use as interactions can be un-natural and forced. We much prefer kanohi te kanohi and hope to spend Christmas with them this year. KIAKO Tēnā koutou katoa. I am Matua Anaru and I currently teach in Nga Purpura. I am trying to get the tamariki to call me Matua, Matua Anaru or Matua Andy but they are struggling to get away from Mr. Laurenson. My name change is part of my initiative to BELONG and CONNECT. In today’s world you have to EXPLORE to THRIVE. My main responsibility is to deliver the Maths programme to Years 5-8. During my career I have taught in many schools around New Zealand as a teacher, Senior Teacher, Deputy- Principal, Principal, and Relieving Teacher (on the Kapiti Coast). These schools include: Naenae Intermediate, Taita Intermediate, Wainuiomata Intermediate, Newlands Intermediate and Wilford School in the Wellington/Hutt Valley area; Paroa School on the West Coast of the South Island; Helensville School, 50 kms NW of Auckland (40 minutes to Queen Street in Auckland); Bohally Intermediate in Blenheim; and of course Paekakariki School. To date my career has been very rewarding and most enjoyable. Working with young, bright eyed, enthusiastic young people keeps me young in spirit. HOBBIES Among my hobbies are: • reading • vegetable gardening • listening to Sportstalk Radio • listening to music • watching television, especially sport and drama • playing golf (weekly rounds as a member of the Kapiti Golf Club and as a player in Inter-Club competition) • fanatical follower of Sport My love of Sport has carried over into my responsibilities at the school.
