  • Billy & Emily England
BILLY & EMILY ENGLAND Extreme Roller-Skating Duo BILLY & EMILY ENGLAND America’s Got Talent Semi-Finalists / Extreme Roller-Skating Duo Billy & Emily England are a brother and sister duo who loves the grace and elegance of roller-skating. Originally from Birmingham, England, they now live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Billy & Emily are seventh generation circus performers who have been roller-skating since they were six years old. They were always skating; even when it was raining their mother would take the furniture out of their kitchen so they could use it as a skating rink. They practiced every day - even on the kitchen table - and began to perform at school and in churches around England. As they perfected their skills, local TV stations and newspapers began to notice and they soon became local stars. They competed on Season 9 of Britain's Got Talent, where they made it all the way to the Semi Finals. In 2008, Emily was a contestant on Big Brother: Celebrity Hijackalong (with her brother Billy); she finished in second place. In 2010, Emily competed in Season 4 of Das Supertalent, where she was, again, a Semifinalist. Billy & Emily competed in America's Got Talent on Season 12. They were fan favorites and finished in the top 10. They are currently the star attraction in Absinthe Las Vegas. Absinthe is the critically acclaimed acro-cabaret variety show featuring world-class artists performing amazing feats of strength, balance, danger and unfathomable flexibility. VIDEO LINKS 1. • Adapting Idols Joost De Bruin and Koos Zwaan
Introduction: Adapting Idols Joost de Bruin and Koos Zwaan Idols is one of the most popular and successful global television formats produced in the last decade. The format has been adapted in over 40 territories all over the world, as the appendix – compiled by Sukhpreet Singh and Martin Kretschmer for this book – shows. The original show, Pop Idol, went to air in the UK in 2001. The next year, local versions of the show were broadcast in Poland, South Africa, the USA, Germany and the Netherlands. By the end of 2004 – exactly three years after the introduction of Pop Idol – 30 territories were screening their own Idols shows, illustrating the rapid global spread of the format. In some cases Idols was produced for transnational geographic regions, such as Asian Idol – with auditions in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam – and the Pan-Arab Superstar, which featured contestants from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco and Algeria. The most recent branch on the global Idols tree at the time of writing is Idol Puerto Rico. The owners of the Idols format, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, have thus managed to capitalize on the work put into the design of the original UK show by turning it into a format and selling it to a range of territories. The goal of Idols shows is to involve a nation (or a region consisting of several different nations) in a quest for a popular music idol who can be admired by all. Idols shows are commonly divided into four distinct phases (Holmes 2004).

  • Fabricating Cultural Events
Fabricating Cultural Events: The Rise of International Programme Formats in Norwegian Television Production Yngvar Kjus, Lillehammer University College1 International trade and cooperation are increasingly affecting what we experience in the national and local media. This development is rapidly evolving with live televised events, like Idols and Dancing with the Stars, and here I pursue why (and how) this is so. I engage specifically with the ways in which licensed international programme formats intervene in existing programme traditions, and affect the repertoire and capacity of national television producers. I trace the practices of the two largest Norwegian broadcasters over the last two decades. The question is not only how licensed formats affect different industry sectors, in this case license-funded NRK and commercial TV 2, but also how different units within the broadcasters are impacted. The article calls for heightened sensitivity to new forms of control and collaboration in creative processes, and new routines for premeditating live events. It suggests that format exchange should be evaluated along a continuum from open to closed; a continuum that can bring nuance to discussions of cultural colonisation. Introduction Already in the 1950s, the producer of The $64,000 Question, Louis Cowan, was making a good living by developing game show formats and selling production licenses to American broadcasters (Anderson, 1978). However, his reach did not extend beyond the United States. The Norwegian broadcaster NRK made its own version of the program (Kvitt eller dobbelt) in 1961, as did its sibling broadcasters in other Nordic countries (Theisen, 1993), and it became a major hit (a version of which is still being produced today).

  • Be Cautious About First Impressions: the Case of Susan Boyle
Be Cautious about First Impressions: The Case of Susan Boyle (and Many Others) Robert Brooks, Ph.D. My wife Marilyn suggested that I write this website article about Susan Boyle. I have always welcomed Marilyn’s advice about topics for my monthly columns, including two of my favorites—the 2004 Red Sox after they won the team’s first World Series in 86 years and Billy Crystal’s play “700 Sundays.” Why an article devoted to Susan Boyle? Marilyn and I had just watched one of the most viewed videos posted on YouTube during the past month, which if you have not seen it you may wish to do so before reading further (simply go to YouTube and type in “Susan Boyle”). Susan was a contestant on the television show “Britain’s Got Talent,” similar to “American Idol” in the United States. The three judges were Simon Cowell (well-known to viewers in the States for his often harsh, acerbic feedback on “American Idol”), Amanda Holden, and Piers Morgan. Susan walked on the stage and was described in one article as heavy and frumpy looking. She immediately had difficulty thinking of the word “villages” when asked where she lived. Simon questioned how old she was and Susan responded 47. In learning of her age, Simon rolled his eyes as if to suggest that a 47-year-old woman was past her prime, seemingly questioning why her talent had not been discovered at an earlier age. Susan countered that her age was “just one side of me.” Upon offering this comment she swayed her hips in a somewhat suggestive fashion, prompting both Simon and Piers to roll their eyes once again.
