We at Monivae have nevertheless been blessed by having wonderful teachers and other staff members who all worked together to ensure the safe and continued education and care of our students and all the Monivae community. Although it will be mentioned in other places in the magazine, I must make a special mention of the completion of the Cricket Hub & Pavilion which has been a tangible highlight for our school. Our students, staff and families would have all needed strength, support and guidance, and also felt the love generated by each of us this year. 13 Remote Learning taught us all how well we can adapt and thrive, both as a School Community and as individuals.

I handled the online learning period quite well, I could get easily distracted because I was at home and had access to things I don't at school but I tried my hardest to get things done on time. If I was ever confused about what a task was, I could ask my family or teacher and they would help me understand it. Mairead Elshaug-Betson

2020 has been a ride that’s for sure full of new experiences some welcomed and others have been massive obstacles that needed to be conquered. Life is about accepting all the challenges along the way, choosing to keep moving forward, getting out of our comfort zone, developing grit and being grateful for all the experiences on the journey of life.

Fiona Mulhall, Deputy Principal

14 Great to see all the great work on Facebook. I was a student there in 1958. Terry Belleville

Remote learning has been a great experience for learning online, I enjoyed being able to learn in a virtual classroom. I was able to get help from my teachers anytime I needed, as well as working on my tasks individually.

Kaitlyn Tonissen

Just a quick note to say thank you for the amazing job everyone has done during this time. So grateful Sam is back at Monivae with his friends and the Staff. Thank you one and all for your amazing work. Diana and Brett McDonald

Throughout Remote Learning we missed one another greatly, however this now means that the value we place on Relationships and Community is treasured and valued even more.

With special guest Ms Sally Leake in attendance, along with many sets of excited parents and students, the night surpassed all expectations. The students danced confidently and happily without making a wrong step due largely to the many hours of practice under the eagle eyes of Mark and Helen Baker. The students hard work and forward planning resulted in all of them being immaculately presented, on time and working together to present a polished set of dances. The Presentation Ball committee coordinated Tom Burland, Emily Gill, Ned Bennett, Annika McArthur, by Pauline Perkins and Cathy Jemma Casey, Chloe Byrne and Ella Dohle Ferguson, led a huge team of volunteers whose time and efforts were remarkable and certainly did not go unnoticed. Thanks also go to the parents of these students who supported them through late night practice sessions, appointments and soothed the nerves when necessary. Our congratulations go to all those students who were involved in this event which is a N BA LL PRESE N TATIO deeply embedded tradition here at Monivae. There are numerous benefits that the students gain from involvement in this event and the smiles on all their faces that night were testament to this. Mrs. Sofia Vearing Senior School Coordinator.

Despite a year full of challenges, Ffrench House fought valiantly alongside its leaders in the pursuit of excellence and great sportsmanship. We saw our leaders dressed to impress in red (who could forget Eleanor’s giant sriracha bottle costume!) where we once again won Best Cheer Squad and Behaviour at the House Swimming Carnival. We were also lucky enough to F fre n ch compete in the Athletics Carnival before going into lockdown. A huge thank you to Sarah Byron for her organisation of house events throughout our remote learning periods, and to the Ffrench students who dedicated their time to competing whilst at home. Every single point for Ffrench House is very much appreciated and I thank you all for contributing to our collective house points tally in 2020. A real highlight this year was seeing Eleanor’s extraordinary organisational skills and Cooper’s illustrious lockdown beard in action as they delivered Ffrench House’s annual assembly via video during Remote Learning. This is especially so as we launched the first year of the New Awakenings curriculum across Years 7-9, and with our transition to Remote Learning were often re-developing programs that we had not yet taught. Despite these challenges, RE staff delivered innovative units of work in both the physical and virtual classrooms.

Some key highlights of our 2020 RE L IGIO N curriculum were: implementing our Whole School Literacy program in our Year 7 units which resulted in a deeper understanding of Scripture and how students can make meaningful connections between stories/parables and their own lives; using Google Sites and videos to teach Year 8s about prayer across multiple religious worldviews in a pluralist society; and amongst COVID-19, our Year 9 students successfully completed mission work by performing acts of kindness whilst at home during Remote Learning. Importantly, I must commend our VCE students who do a phenomenal job at pursuing an accelerated curriculum in Years 10 and 11. A very special ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’ to our Year 11s who have worked vehemently to complete Units 3 and 4 amongst a unique set of challenges this year. A huge thank you to the Religious Education faculty who have worked tirelessly this year: Miss Brighid Cannon; Mrs Rosalie Fotheringham; Mr Danny Franc; Mrs Catherine Huisman; Mr Terry Molan; and Mrs Fiona Mulhall, with an especially warm welcome to Miss Cannon and Mrs Mulhall who joined the faculty (and the College) this year. 52 Camps cancelled, work experience cancelled, guest speakers cancelled, careers days cancelled. ‘Cancelled’ CAREERS has been the repeating feature of Careers at Monivae this year. However, Careers at Monivae has not been defined by this in 2020. We have still seen students enthusiastically research and plan the next stages of their post-school life. Some of our Year 12s achieved early entry into their University courses through their Year 11 results. This was a generous initiative by some Universities due to Coronavirus pandemic. The Morrisby Profile was completed by all Year 10s remotely and showed us all another way of completing and engaging in this important process. Keen students have still gone out on work experience, initiated by their enthusiasm. Some of these experiences have led to work opportunities and ongoing placements for the VCAL program. Many thanks go to our Careers Teachers for their flexibility in delivering the Careers Curriculum. I also thank the students for maintaining their commitment to their studies and patience in this crazy year. And finally, the great news is that all Year 10 students will be on work experience at the end of the year, INSTEAD of completing an exam week. What a great initiative, and we thank the school leadership for this very generous opportunity. Michael Harms Careers Co-ordinator Amalie Rowe

The students have learnt about the different forms of Visual Communication and have been developing their technical drawing skills, such as orthogonal and isometric using manual and computer-generated applications.

54 Visual Arts VCE Studio Art The students in VCE Studio Art have been exploring the characteristics and requirements for their exploration proposal and methods for recording and documenting ideas and processes. They developed an exploration proposal outlining the process and direction for their Artworks. This proposal was then used to research artists, refine concepts, experiment with material and techniques and record these findings in their visual diary. From this work, one major Artwork was developed for assessment. The students in this class then had to create most of their work remotely. This was very challenging as some of the works were very large and used unusual materials such as a piano. Their final works were displayed in our Chevalier Centre foyer to celebrate their achievements.

7-10 Art These classes have been researching established artists and completing Artworks that explore pattern and design. The have created a range of works including triptych paintings, etchings and drawings. The students have been working with materials such as Lino to create some amazing prints. Students in Year 8 have had an introduction to using clay, making slip and learning effective hand building skills. These skills have been built on in Year 9 and 10 classes where students get to choose between 2D and 3D art. All of this exploration of materials and techniques develops not only their understanding and skills but it also prepares students for VCE studio art.

55 3D Art The students in the Year 9 and 10 classes have researched prominent 3D artists and created works from paper, inspired by the work of Zaha Hadid and Antonio Gaudi. The task requires students to research and gather inspiration and then create a collage inspired by one of their buildings. These ideas were then developed into sculptures. Edward De Salis 65 Although met with numerous difficulties with the COVID-19 of 2020, the Monivae College Army Cadet Unit persevered through the hard times and attempted to utilise the concept of Teamwork to stay united with one another in such dystopian times. The annual year 8 bivouac went ahead on the 13th of March, concluding the next day with numerous enriching activities such as Radio CADETS Telephone Procedure (RATEL), First Aid and Navigation exercises. The cadets engaged their inner survival skills with the development of camouflage and concealment which went along with a game of bush hide and seek. The match was held at Monivae. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Hamilton College were quickly undone by some fantastic bowling from the Monivae boys, as they were bowled out for 37. Vincent Huf made light work of College's top order finishing with figures of 4/10 from his 6 overs. Connor Burns bowled second change, taking three wickets in his first over adding to College's collapse. Josh Gordan was also impressive with the ball, removing one of the openers and taking two wickets to close out the innings. Fionn Neeson and Brad Field opened the batting for Monivae and quickly made progress on the small target. However, Field was removed for 4, and Hamish Cook joined Neeson at the crease to finish the game. < Tara-Lee Bradley 77 Under usual circumstances, Monivae would have participated in both the Senior and Intermediate levels of the Greater Western Regional Finals in Dimboola. We expect that all of our teams would have competed with the same level of success as seen in previous years. However as people move through age groups and past players graduate, it becomes more uncertain.

H ockey The success of the 2019 Senior Girls State Champions carried through to 2020, as the team was awarded the South West Sports Star Award for School Team of the Year. This is the teams’ second School Team of the Year award, joining the one received during the local Sportswomen of the Year ceremony in 2019. Locally, the Glenelg Regional Hockey Association altered its regular competition to allow the Monivae Hockey club to enter teams in the U/16 and U/18 competitions. These teams performed with varying levels of success in the two games played before the season was cancelled. We hope that Hockey at Monivae in 2021 goes ahead without the troubles that were endured this year, and we wish our future Hockey Captains the same level of success that we experienced during our previous years at Monivae.
