FACULTY OF LANGUAGE AND ARTS SOEGIJAPRANATA CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY SEMARANG 2018 ii A Handbook for Reading and Writing about American and Indonesian Popular Culture FOREWARD In the Faculty of Language and Arts of Soegijapranata Catholic University, students majoring in Linguistics or Literature are required to conduct a study and write a thesis. In order to conduct a research, students need to have a good understanding of the basics of a number of courses that becomes the basis of their thesis research writing. Although this handbook or module is for Literature major students who want to make use of Popular Culture products, such as music, song lyrics, film, television shows (serial film, film documentary, box movies, cooking and game shows), comic books, graphic novels, fashion, and advertisements as their major research data; it can also be combined with the theories learnt in linguistics courses to write their pop culture analysis. This module aims to provide an overview of pop culture. It is a compilation of articles and chapters of numerous books on pop culture, including American and Indonesian pop culture. Written samples from the lecturer herself is also compiled in this module to open-up students’ minds about the application of pop culture analysis. This module consists of five chapters. Chapters 1 to 3 focus more on general discussion of what popular culture is and what popular culture made of is. Chapters 4 to 5 are intended to give students more in-depth knowledge about popular culture through further reading and writing. I hope that students have a better understanding of pop culture and are able to make use of this module to help produce an academic paper on a certain pop culture product/ phenomena. I would like to thank the writer of this module for her time and effort of creating it. Finally, I do hope that students do benefit from this module. Angelika Riyandari, Ph.D. Dean of the Faculty of Language and Arts Ekawati Marhaenny Dukut iii SYLLABUS Course description: This course takes students to the definition of culture in general to understand about the characteristics of popular (pop) culture by making a contrast between high and low culture. Although American pop culture products with its myths, beliefs, icons, heroes and rituals become the focus of attention, the discussions brought from the book’s readings is made lively by comparing it to the Indonesian pop culture. The culture of what students see and experience in the current modern society, such as what is seen in the film, television, publishing, advertising and news media industries are discussion samples for University students’ pop culture class. Course objectives: The students using this book are expected to know the definition and criteria of pop culture discuss the difference and similarities of American vs Indonesian pop culture, in order to produce a systematically academic paper on a certain pop culture product/ phenomena. Course format: lecture, individual and group work, in-class discussions, student assignments and presentations. Course policies: Students are required to attend at least 75% of in-class time in order to participate in the Mid and Final Tests. 15 minute lateness is the maximum time for attendance. Other than that a telephone call or text message on the D-day, followed by a written letter acknowledged by a parent/ guardian and Vice Dean of Academic Affairs is required to explain an absence.     Rosa Katz: Oral History Transcript www.wisconsinhistory.org/HolocaustSurvivors/Katz. asp Name: Rachel (Rosa) Goldberg Katz (1924–2012) Birth Place: Lodz, Poland Arrived in Wisconsin: 1953, Oshkosh Project Name: Oral Histories: Wisconsin Survivors Rosa Katz of the Holocaust Biography: Rachel (Rosa) Goldberg Katz was born in Lodz, Poland, on May 6, 1924, to a well-to-do family with liberal Jewish beliefs. In 1935, her sister and brother-in-law immigrated to Palestine while the rest of the family remained in Poland. When the Germans occupied Lodz in 1939, 15-year-old Rosa was among the thousands of Jews crowded into the city's ghetto. Three years later, in July 1942, her mother was deported from the ghetto and never heard from again. In August 1944, the Lodz Ghetto was liquidated. Its starving residents, including Rosa, her father, brother, and sister-in-law, Hela, were all shipped to Auschwitz. There she was separated from her father and brother. She never saw them again. German officials mistakenly sent Rosa and hundreds of other Jewish women (instead of French prisoners) to work at the Krupp munitions factory in Berlin. For eight months, Rosa assembled delicate timepieces for German bombs. In March 1945, she was transferred to the death camp in Ravensbruck, Germany. The Swedish Red Cross liberated the camp within a month of her arrival. Its inhabitants were transported to Sweden where Rosa recuperated for several years. She married Bernard Katz there (also a survivor). In April 1948, they came to the U.S. Initially settling in North Carolina, the Katz family moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1953.

    Central Problems in Cultural Studies 1 Language and Material For Marxism, culture is a corporeal force locked into the socially organized production of the material conditions of existence. Marxism has argued that the material mode of production is ‘the real foundation’ of cultural superstructures. That is, the material – understood here as the economic – determines the cultural. However, this orthodox reading of Marx proved to be too mechanical and deterministic in exploring the specific features of culture. Consequently, the narrative of cultural studies involves a distancing of itself from Marxist reductionism. Instead, the analysis of the autonomous logic of language, culture, representation and consumption was placed in the foreground. – Barker, pp. 25-26 2 The Textual Character of Culture Most students of cultural studies are aware that culture can be read as a text, using concepts like signification, code or discourse. However, an emphasis on structuralist and poststructuralist accounts of signification has sometimes led cultural studies to reify language as a ‘thing’ or ‘system’ rather than grasp it as a social practice. – Barker, p. 26 3 The metaphor of culture as ‘like a language’ has a great deal to recommend it. However, there is also much to be gained by describing culture in terms of practices, routines and spatial arrangements. Not only is language always embedded in practice, but also all practices signify.     CHAPTER ONE: ART, TECHNOLOGY, AND HIGH ART/LOW CULTURE DEBATES IN CANONICAL AMERICAN ART HISTORY I. Overview In his Media Art History, Hans-Peter Schwarz of the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany (ZKM) wrote: “The history of the new media [sic] is inextricably linked with the history of the project of the modern era as a whole. It can only be described as the evolution of the human experience of reality, i.e. of the social reality relationship in the modern age.” I begin with his words, which have strong resonance for me, perhaps beyond his initial intent or ultimate direction. His astute triangulation of those three concepts—new media history, the project of the modern era, and “social reality”—form the nexus of my theoretical investigation. For it seems that current social realities and the project of the modern era largely govern new media’s reception within the Western art history canon. Perhaps clarity regarding the ideological interconnection of these three elements will only be possible with more historical distance. However, this dissertation represents a step toward a better understanding of the sometimes-vicious canonical opposition to the fusion of art and technology, in light of these intersections. Key are his two phrases: “the project of the modern era,” and “the evolution of the human experience of reality, i.e. of the social reality relationship in the modern age.” On the basis of Schwarz’s text, I take the second phrase to mean the dehumanization that results from industrialization and modern warfare. In regard to artistic production, he rightly underscores the abrupt reorganization of vision precipitated by, for example, developments in photography and cinematography during the early modernist period.
