On the evening of 10 February, police arrested Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar, at his home in Kuala Lumpur on charges of sedition for posting a tweet that suggested the Federal Court's decision to uphold the conviction of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim earlier in the day was politically motivated. "Those in the black robes were proud when passing sentence. The rewards from their political masters must be lucrative," Zunar said in his tweet. Zunar, 52, was taken into custody at Bukit Aman police station in Kuala Lumpur. On 11 February, the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court issued a three-day remand order that allowed police to detain Zunar at Dang Wangi police station until 14 February. -
Only Ibrahim Ali Dares to Back Dr M Malaysiakini.Com Apr 4, 2015 by Yoursay
Only Ibrahim Ali dares to back Dr M MalaysiaKini.com Apr 4, 2015 By Yoursay YOURSAY ‘Like us, you have no more immunity to say whatever you please.’ Perkasa backs Dr M on solving Altantuya poser Ferdtan : Finally Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali has broken his silence with regard to attacks on PM Najib Razak. Earlier he played safe by crawling to his hole keeping his opinions to himself. Now his mentor Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said his piece loud and clear; Ibrahim Ali has decided to come out in open to back him. Welcome citizen Ibrahim Ali, be careful with what you say, and like us you have no more immunity to say whatever you please. The police are now watching you as well. Check ‘Twitter-king’ inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar’s tweets for possible clues if you have made a mistake. You may get the 3am visit at your home by fully armed masked police like in the case of MP Khalid Samad. Diablo: "Ibrahim added that Najib seems to be even worse than his predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi." This is the first time I agree with Ibrahim Ali that Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is a better prime minister than Najib. Abdullah gave the country the Iskandar development, what has Najib given Malaysia? High debt and high tax. Gordon Gecko : Najib, what are you waiting for? Rope in Ibrahim Ali and dress him in purple. You might just score some points with the Chinese voters and thumb your nose at Dr M's camp. It's a no-holds-barred game now and it’s time to take offensive against the Dr M camp. -

This study attempts to identify the implication of conjunctive element shifts in the Chinese translation of argumentative column articles by an established columnist. More specifically, this study focuses on the implication of a cohesive shift, which includes explicitations, implicitations, shifts and wrong translations of conjunctive elements in the translated text. The texts in this study are argumentative in nature, and the use of conjunctive elements is pivotal in guiding the reader on the flow of the argument at hand. Through in- depth analysis and observation, it is found that changes in conjunctive elements can affect a translation in six possible ways: altering the intensity of the message, shifting the focus of the message, altering the tone and manner of the texts, causing repetitious and intrusive translations, changing the interpretation of the text, and altering the conversational-like element in the source text. -
Another PAS Leader Quits Penang Gov't Malaysiakini.Com Jun 11, 2015 by Low Chia Ming
Another PAS leader quits Penang gov't MalaysiaKini.com Jun 11, 2015 By Low Chia Ming Another PAS leader has quit his government related posts in Penang, following in the footsteps of the party's ousted progressive leaders, Mohamad Sabu and Mujahid Yusof Rawa. Penang PAS information chief Rosidi Hussain resigned as a director of Penang Youth Development Corporation. This was announced by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in a statement today. When contacted, Rosidi said he was resigning to focus on his law firm as a practising lawyer. Rosidi did not want to elaborate further if his resignation had anything to do with PAS under its new conservative hardline leadership passing a resolution to sever ties with DAP. However, he admitted that it was difficult to carry out his duties in the Penang government what with the ongoing spat between PAS and DAP. "But I appreciate the working experience with the chief minister and the state government. "It's just the environment is no longer conducive for me to serve the people as many things are happening," he said. He lamented that the tense relationship between DAP and PAS was a foregone conclusion after they fell into Umno's trap to break up Pakatan Rakyat. Lim (photo) also confirmed receiving Mohamad's resignation as a director of PBA Holdings Berhad. He praised the leaders for their principled stance which he said was in contrast to other PAS representatives who were still clinging on to their government positions even though the party had severed ties with DAP. "Fortunately there are still honourable PAS leaders who have resigned despite the refusal of the PAS new leadership to follow up on their killing Pakatan. -

Amanah: Anwar’s ‘wise decision’ reflects need to remove distractions Malaysia Today June 18, 2017 By Vanesha Shurentheran Salahuddin Ayub says he shares Anwar’s concern that PPBM’s proposition to occupy top two posts in Pakatan Harapan was worrying. PETALING JAYA: Amanah has lauded Anwar Ibrahim’s move not to offer himself as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) prime ministerial candidate for the 14th general election (GE14), saying it showed the PKR de facto leader’s determination to remove distractions coming in the path of defeating the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN). Its deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said it was a wise decision as the opposition coalition needs to move forward instead of being weighed down by issues over who should be the prime minister if it wins the election due by the middle of next year. He said Anwar knows what is best for PH in any situation, including the recent scenario where PPBM apparently wanted to lead the coalition. “He has shed light on this for us, for PH to move forward and to forget about who will be the next prime minister,” Salahuddin told FMT. He said it is time for PH component parties to show their strength in unity and convince the people of their cooperation and capabilities. He also said he concurred with Anwar’s concern that PPBM’s proposition was worrying. Salahuddin said it was time for differences in the coalition to be set aside for the sake of the people. “We need to put aside all our differences and advance forward. The people want to know what we can offer to solve their problems,” he said. -

[25 May 2015] * This written statement is issued, unedited, in the language(s) received from the submitting non-governmental organization(s). GE.15-09265 (E) A/HRC/29/NGO/87 Crackdown on freedom of expression and assembly in Malaysia There has been a serious regression in Malaysia's democratic space in 2015, with the government's crackdown on freedom of speech and assembly, predominantly through the use of the Sedition Act 1948, Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, and various sections of the Penal Code. Freedom of speech and expression is enshrined in Article 10(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia. However, the guarantee of such a right is severely limited and qualified by broad provisions in Article 10(2)(a), which stipulates that Parliament may impose “such restrictions as it deems necessary or expedient in the interest of the security of the Federation or any part thereof”. Similarly, the freedom of assembly is enshrined in Article 10(1)(b) of the Constitution, but is restricted through Article 10(2), 10(4) and Article 149 of the Constitution. -

DAP: Perak Assembly Rejects Questions on Land Deal Malaysiakini.Com Aug 16, 2013
DAP: Perak assembly rejects questions on land deal MalaysiaKini.com Aug 16, 2013 Perak DAP chief Ngeh Koo Ham today criticised the BN-led Perak government for consistently rejecting written and oral questions posed by him in the state assembly. Ngeh said he had six questions for written answers, and three for oral answers, but all were rejected - mostly on the grounds that the answers can be found in a "normal reference book". "I have offered publicly to pay RM10,000 for such a reference book, which has answers to the questions but no one has come forward with such a book," said Ngeh, who is also Sitiawan assemblyperson, said in a statement today. All of the questions are related to state land transactions in Perak. NONE"I believe the people are very interested in the answers to these questions as they involve tens of thousands of acres of state land, which are worth billions of ringgit," Ngeh said. He said Perak Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (right) was "making a joke out of himself" by giving out such "ridiculous" excuses to these questions. The rejected questions in the state assembly dates as far back as the year 2011, Ngeh said. He further claimed that when the state opposition asked that all questions not answered orally, be answered in writing instead, Zambry in turn had two days ago claimed that the Penang and Selangor state government, both led by the opposition, did not give out written answers as well. "I have asked the Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and the Selangor assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh, and they have confirmed that all questions which are not answered orally will be replied in writing.
