Dec. 7, 2015 - Jan. 3, 2016 Bull Dog Bulletin 5 Boys Basketball: Bull Dogs strive to keep the faith in building process

Keep the faith. In a phrase, first-year Columbus North boys basketball coach Paul Ferguson is asking his players to do just that after a three close games have turned into a trio of losses for the 1-3 Bull Dogs after two weeks of the season. Columbus North opened with a 55-40 victory over Heritage Christian before dropping a 55-54 decision to Hauser. CN then fell 57-54 at Shelbyville before seeing Martinsville knock off the Bull Dogs 65-63 on a last-second shot. “I was really proud of the way our team played at Mar- tinsville,” Ferguson said. “We were coming off a tough loss at Shelbyville, and our guys showed a lot of resiliency. They bounced back and played their best game of the season. We had great effort and execution for much of the game. Unfortunately, we were not able to close the game out. But overall, I was encouraged to see that we were capable of playing at that level against a really good Martinsville team.” Through four games, 6-8 junior Alex King leads the team IN ACTION: Junior Alex King drives to the basket against with averages of 16.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Junior Heritage Christian. King leads CN in scoring and rebounding. guard Nathan VanDeventer adds 12.5 points and a team-best 2.3 steals, while 6-7 junior Stephon Peters-Smith contributes 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds. Sophomore Trey Vincent has provided 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds, while sophomore Jaylen Flemmons adds 4.5 points and 3.3 rebounds. Sophomore J.D. Harris chips in 4.3 points, while seniors Alex Algee and Mitchell Kelley have respective scoring averages of 3.8 and 3.0 points. “I told our guys that experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want,” the coach said, citing King, Harris and Flem- mons as players who have begun to step up. “We didn’t get what we wanted in Martinsville, but we got more experience. Next time we’re in that end-game situation, we’re going to be better.” With the Conference Indiana opener against Franklin Central on Friday, games next week against Columbus East and Terre Haute South and a Dec. 22 contest against Harrison (West Lafayette) in a holiday shootout at Marion, Ferguson is urging players and fans to keep perspective with the Bull Dogs’ young squad. “We are sticking with our theme of ‘building for February,’ ” Ferguson said. “We’re trying to get a little better each day, and we can’t get down on ourselves. We have to keep playing hard, and keep that big-picture view, that we want to be the best team we can be by the end of the season. We want to reach our potential as a team.”

Dec. 7, 2015 - Jan. 3, 2016 Bull Dog Bulletin 7 Three Columbus North players chosen IFCA all-state in football

Columbus North senior Mitchell Kelley and CN juniors Mitchell Burton and David Redding have been chosen first-team all-state by the Indiana Football Coaches Association. Kelley, a 5-11, 185-pound safety, was honored as IFCA Class 6A Senior All-State. Burton, a 6-2, 185-pound running back, and Redding, a 6-5, 280-pound offensive lineman, were selected IFCA Class 6A Junior All-State. Kelley was the Bull Dogs’ leading defensive player, contributing contributed a team-high 103 tackles, including five tackles for loss and one sack to a squad that went 6-4 and placed third in Conference Indiana. He also tied a school season record with four fumble recoveries while adding two interceptions, two hurries, four passes broken up and one forced fumble. Burton, meanwhile, rushed for 1,757 yards and 22 touch- downs to pace the Bull Dogs’ offense. The yardage total was sec- ond in CNHS history, behind only the 1,782 yards by Alex Turner in 2006, and Burton’s TD total tied a school record set by Mike ALL-STATE PLAY: Mitchell Kelley reacts after making Andress in 1973. Burton had TD runs of 91 yards (vs. Franklin) a fumble recovery against Terre Haute North. and 90 yards (vs. Perry Meridian) to have two carries in the top five in school annals, and his career rushing total of 2,294 yards places him fifth in CN history with one season to go. The career rushing record is 4,233 yards by Turner in 2005-2007. Much of Burton’s success is because of the play up front of Redding, who helped the Bull Dogs set a school record for 417.7 yards per game on offense. Redding also contributed to an effort that saw the team place second in school top-five seasons in scoring (35.0 points per game) and rushing (2,545 yards on the ground). Earlier, all three players were selected first-team all-Conference Indiana. They were joined by senior receiver Alex Algee, senior linebacker Brice McDaniel and senior defensive lineman Drew Schoeberl on the all-conference team. Junior defensive lineman Coleman Tennyson and sophomore cornerback J.D. Harris were chosen honorable mention all-conference.

He also spent 10 seasons as a boys’ basketball assistant to Stearman at Columbus North and was the CNHS girls’ basketball head coach for two seasons. Wade becomes the fourth player from the 1962-63 Bull Dogs to be inducted in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, joining class- mate Bill Russell (inducted in 2014) and teammates Jerry Newsom (1997) and Steve Hollenbeck (2006). The coach of that team, Bill Stear- man, also is a Hall of Fame inductee. He was inducted in 1983. The two coaches are Bill Hahn, who won 246 games as a high school head coach after a playing career at Michigan City Elston and Drake University, and Joe Todrank, who prevailed in 295 games in a 21-year coaching career after excelling as a player at Holland High School and Oakland City College. Players in the 2016 induction class include standouts Damon Bailey, Indiana’s all-time leading high school scorer at Bedford North Lawrence and an All-American at Indiana University, and Calbert Cheaney, a 1989 Evansville Harrison graduate who became a three-time All-American at IU, currently holds IU and Big Ten Conference career scoring records (with 2,613 points) and a 13-year NBA player with Washington, Boston, Denver, Utah and Golden State. Another inductee who is notable in Columbus is Willie Humes, a 1967 Madison graduate who has served as an assistant boys’ bas- ketball coach and assistant girls’ basketball coach at Columbus East. Humes amassed 1,876 career points while helping Madison to four sec- tional titles and later starred at Vincennes and Idaho State universities. He was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA and the Utah Stars of the ABA, and joins his brother Larry as an inductee. Larry Humes was inducted in 1991. Dec. 7, 2015 - Jan. 3, 2016 Bull Dog Bulletin 15 Swimming: Bull Frogs seek to build toward strong performances

The Columbus North swimming teams visit Columbus East on Tuesday for the intra-city competition and follow by hosting the Co- lumbus North Relays on Saturday in Charles “Chick” Newell Natatorium. Bloomington North, Center Grove and Floyd Central are the visi- tors for the relay event. The Bull Frog boys enter the week with a 3-2 record in dual meets, while the CN girls are 1-4. The team, 36 boys and 23 girls, is hoping to build for strong performances after the holiday break. Meets in January include the Con- ference Indiana championships (girls on Jan. 16 at Terre Haute South and boys on Jan. 30 at Columbus North). “We look at dual meets as information gathering,” Columbus North coach Bridger Bell told The Republic following a dual meet at Seymour where the boys prevailed 123-63 but the girls lost 99-86. “We want to be able to put things together for our championship meets. We had some (boys) swimmers in events who weren’t their usual events. They took it really seriously, stepped up and raced really hard – and some had some breakout performances.” Columbus North opened its season Nov. 23 with a sweep at Jennings County. Junior Angel Torres Martinez, senior Chase McQueen and junior Alex Nusawardhana each contributed to four victories in that meet where the boys won 129-55 and the girls prevailed 131-53. A day later, McQueen and junior Grace Haskett each took multiple blue ribbons but the Bull Frogs were swept by Franklin. The Grizzly Cub boys won 99-87 and the Franklin girls won 132-54. North Central followed by sweeping Columbus North on Nov. 28. McQueen, Torres Martinez and junior Adam Zhuang provided some bright spots for the boys in a narrow 93-92 setback, while Nusawardhana and junior Sarah Towsley provided first-place efforts for the girls in a 127-59 loss. Freshman Jared Carroll, Zhuang, sophomore Thomas Goble and McQueen were among those who excelled in the boys’ triumph at Seymour. Senior Ben Thompson, freshman Sam Russell and senior Jared Imlay also contributed to winning relays that night, while junior Darby Coles and senior Mackenzie Fry were the girls’ top performers. Nusawardhana, senior Cori Taylor and sophomore Kaitlyn Niebrugge also swam relay legs, while Nusawardhana captured the 500 free against the Owls. McQueen, Zhuang and Carroll paced the CN boys in a 118-67 victory over Center Grove on Dec. 5. Fry and Nusawardhana had strong efforts for the girls, who dropped a 110-74 decision to the Trojans. “Eighty percent of our athletes have lifetime bests already this season,” Bell said. “They have been giving their all every time they step on the blocks. I am excited to see how they do at the end of the season with some rest, and I also am excited to see the team spirit carry forward the Bull Frog tradition.”

Dec. 7, 2015 - Jan. 3, 2016 Bull Dog Bulletin 19 Wrestling: ’Dogs show some bright spots entering CN Invitational

Coach Nick Skinner expresses optimism about the Columbus North wrestling team. However, after an encouraging performance in the Harrison Invitational over Thanksgiving weekend in West La- fayette, the Bull Dogs need to refocus and re-energize for the Columbus North Invitational after the team went 0-4 and placed fifth in the Bloomington Invita- tional last Saturday at Bloomington South. A dual meet at Jennings County follows on Dec. 15, and the wrestlers are then off until competing in the North Montgomery Holiday Dual Meet Invita- tional on Dec. 29-30. Sophomore Curtis Collins pro- vided a bright spot in Bloomington, going 4-0 at 132 pounds. He posted three pins among victories over opponents from Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Center Grove and Martinsville. Junior David Redding went 1-0 with a win over Bloomington North at ON TOP: Senior Brett Bosserman competes during a match in last season’s 285 pounds, while three CN athletes went Columbus North Invitational. The Bull Dogs host the 2015 event Saturday. 2-2 in the event – sophomore Brigham Kleinhenz at 160, junior Josh Larson at 182 and sophomore Cortez Bandy at 195. In the team competition, the Bull Dogs lost 45-28 to the Cougars, 45-21 to the Panthers, 65-12 to the Trojans and 43-36 to the Arte- sians. The results dropped CN to 5-10 in dual meets for the season. Center Grove won the meet with a 4-0 record for the day. Bloomington South was second at 3-1 followed by Bloomington North at 2-2 and Martinsville at 1-3. “We still have a few starters out with injuries, but we did not have a good day,” Skinner said. “Nick Miller and Isaiah Peetz missed weight, and that did not help. Still, we will continue to improve, and missing weight will not be an issue in the future.” Columbus North opened its season by tying for sixth place in the nine-team Capital City Classic at Beech Grove. Peetz headline the effort there, placing third at 120 pounds. Collins and sophomore Andrew Chapman posted respective fourth-place finishes at 132 and 170 pounds, while six CN wrestlers were sixth in their classes. Collins and Chapman were the top ’Dogs at the Harrison Invitational, each going 9-1 over the two-day, 10-meet competition while vying in the 132- and 170-pound divisions. Larson went 8-2 in the event at 182, while Peetz and Kleinhenz each posted 7-3 marks at 120 and 160, respectively. Senior Alex Davidson went 6-4 at 145, and sophomore Nick Tungett was 5-3 at 220 and 0-1 at 195. The Bull Dogs followed with a dual meet at Franklin, falling to the powerhouse Grizzly Cubs 58-12. Peetz and Davidson each took decisions at Franklin, while Miller prevailed in a forfeit.
