Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 2 Abstract This section discusses the complex psychological and philosophical reason for Shogun Yoshimune’s contrasting handlings of his two adopted daughters’ and his favorite son’s weddings. In my thinking, Yoshimune lived up to his philosophical principles by the illogical, puzzling treatment of the three weddings. We can witness the manifestation of his modest and frugal personality inherited from his ancestor Ieyasu, cohabiting with his strong but unconventional sense of obligation and respect for his benefactor Tsunayoshi. The tsunami caused by this earthquake was 8-9m high, which subsequently reached an upstream height of up to 40m, causing vast and heavy damage over a 500km span of the pacifi c east coast of Japan (the immediate footage of the power of such forces now being widely known throughout the world). The total damage and casualties due to the earthquake and subsequent tsunami are estimated to be approximately 19,500 dead and missing persons; in terms of buildings, 115,000 totally destroyed, 162,000 half destroyed, and 559,000 buildings being parti ally destroyed. Immediately aft er the earthquake, starti ng with President Gustavo Araoz’s message enti tled ‘ICO- MOS expresses its solidarity with Japan’, we received warm messages of support and encourage- ment from ICOMOS members throughout the world. On behalf of Japan ICOMOS, I would like to take this opportunity again to express our deepest grati tude and appreciati on to you all. There have been many enquiries from all over the world about the state of damage to cultural heritage in Japan due to the unfolding events. Accordingly, with the cooperati on of the Agency for Cultural Aff airs, Japan ICOMOS issued on 22nd March 2011 a fi rst immediate report regarding the state of Important Cultural Properti es designated by the Government, and sent it to the ICOMOS headquarters, as well as making it public on the Japan ICOMOS website. -

Traditional Crafts of Kumamoto Various traditional crafts are used in everyday life in Kumamoto. These crafts are born from Kumamoto’s natural environment, the skills Traditional Crafts of Kumamoto of craftsmen, and the ingenuity used by locals in their daily lives. Kumamoto’s handicrafts are created through communication between Craft items that originate from Kumamoto and were handed down for the craft creators and the craft users. Over 200 crafts in Japan have been declared Nationally Designated Crafts, including Kyo and Arita ware pottery, and Wajima-style lacquerware. In Kumamoto, Shodai pottery, Amakusa ceramics, and Higo inlay metalwork all received this distinction in March 2003. In December 2013, Yamaga lanterns were the fourth craft from Kumamoto to be designated. 1 Higo-Zogan Metalwork Metalwork in Kumamoto includes the following crafts: Higo-zogan, which originated from sword accessories; Kawashiri and Hitoyoshi-Kuma cutting tools, such as kitchen knives, farm hoes and sickles; and swords, the production of which dates back 750 years ago to the Kamakura Period. -

The objects examined include one such handscroll painting, several illustrated books from the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library, and Hokusai Ryūkyū Hakkei, an 1832 series of eight landscape prints depicting sites in Okinawa. Drawing upon previous scholarship on the role of popular publishing in forming conceptions of “Japan” or of “national identity” at this time, a media discourse approach is employed to argue that such publications can serve as reliable indicators of understandings -

In a ctional feudal province of Japan, the uneasy balance between secrets and subplots remained quietly—albeit delicately—settled until the day the regional Daimyo discovered the Geisha’s secret. For these many long years the Daimyo had coveted, consulted, and trusted the Geisha. However, during that time she had secretly despised the Daimyo and loved his most loyal samurai in secret. ey bore a child 20 years ago, who has now grown into a formidable young man. Upon discovering the Geisha’s secret relationship, the Daimyo raged and dishonored the samurai, ordering him to kill the Geisha and commit seppuku. e samurai refused and fought his way free, helping the Geisha escape. e samurai was declared a ronin and both were declared fugitives. In hiding, the Geisha’s son began to spread many of the secrets the Daimyo shared with his mother over the years and the Daimyo’s honor began to come into question by the city nobles. Now the Shogun is on his way to the city to consult the Daimyo and uncover the truth. e Daimyo has called all his noble allies and the ronin’s main rival to hunt for the Geisha and the ronin in hopes of exposing the conspiracy against him. The Hosokawa Family Eisei Bunko Collection
NEWS RELEASE November, 2009 The Lineage of Culture – The Hosokawa Family Eisei Bunko Collection The Tokyo National Museum is pleased to present the special exhibition “The Lineage of Culture—The Hosokawa Family Eisei Bunko Collection” from Tuesday, April 20, to Sunday, June 6, 2010. The Eisei Bunko Foundation was established in 1950 by 16th-generation family head Hosokawa Moritatsu with the objective of preserving for future generations the legacy of the cultural treasures of the Hosokawa family, lords of the former Kumamoto domain. It takes its name from the “Ei” of Eigen’an—the subtemple of Kenninji in Kyoto, which served as the family temple for eight generations from the time of the original patriarch Hosokawa Yoriari, of the governing family of Izumi province in the medieval period— and the “Sei” of Seiryūji Castle, which was home to Hosokawa Fujitaka (better known as Yūsai), the founder of the modern Hosokawa line. Totaling over 80,000 objects, it is one of the leading collections of cultural properties in Japan and includes archival documents, Yūsai’s treatises on waka poetry, tea utensils connected to the great tea master Sen no Rikyū from the personal collection of 2nd-generation head Tadaoki (Sansai), various objects associated with Hosokawa Gracia, and paintings by Miyamoto Musashi. The current exhibition will present the history of the Hosokawa family and highlight its role in the transmission of traditional Japanese culture—in particular the secrets to understanding the Kokinshū poetry collection, and the cultural arts of Noh theater and the Way of Tea—by means of numerous treasured art objects and historical documents that have been safeguarded through the family’s tumultuous history. -

Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power. -
