It is an honour to be counted as one of the many volunteers that make Baseball Alberta a nationally renowned organization that is helping to make the game of baseball accessible to all and a sport that will once again be an Olympic dream for many. In any organization, every volunteer role helps associations function and grow stronger. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all people who volunteer. The power of volunteering goes beyond the organization. It reaches into the community, strengthens and supports the bonds between people, and can have a positive economic impact. In the 2019 season, we registered 17,866 players, a small decrease in player registrations from the all-time record of 18,083 players registered in 2018. We are pleased to have players registered from members as far north as Fort St. John to as far south as Lethbridge and everywhere else across the province. This decrease didn’t affect the huge task for the Baseball Alberta to schedule the 479 teams in six different leagues, including all the different age categories in each of them. On behalf of the membership, I would like to thank the dedicated Baseball Alberta office staff for a job well done! Growing the number of umpires continues to be a focus for Baseball Alberta. I encourage people to remember that umpiring is an integral part of the game. In 2019, Baseball Alberta provided 25 NUCP level 1 clinics as well as NUCP clinics at the other levels and registered 917 umpires. This may seem like a lot, but with half of the umpires in Alberta also being players and coaches, we need more to officiate the over 4500 league games that we schedule each year along with 46 Provincial Championships at the end of the season. If you are interested in becoming a paid umpire, speak with your local baseball association. Training and development doesn’t stop with the player and umpires. Coaches are the critical volunteers in every community helping players learn the game and ensuring that the teams are organized for the players to be able to play. We continue to develop coaches at all levels. This past season there were 580 new coaches registered. In total 1077 coaches attended 84 NUCP clinics in 17 different communities throughout the province. The Girl’s/Women’s Baseball Technical Coordinator along with the Girl’s/Women’s Director continue to drive recruitment, retention, and development of female athletes as part of a province-wide initiative. I am excited about our dedicated Alberta Girl’s Baseball website at albertagirlsbaseball.ca. I encourage everyone to visit this site and learn more about Girl’s/Women’s baseball in Alberta. One of the largest challenges for all our member associations continues to be baseball facilities development and maintenance. Baseball Alberta’s Facility Grant Program was created in 2017 for our 50th Anniversary. In 2019, we had 17 applications, with a total request for funds of $226,000. We were able select and assist six members, providing $60,000 in matched funding for a total of $195,000 in funding over the past three years. We are very pleased to be able to continue with this program for 2020. I am proud to be a part of an organization that is able to contribute back to the community in this way. I would also like to encourage people to advocate for the maintenance and upgrades required for sports facilities in your communities, along with the development of new facilities where needed. It is important to remind all levels of government that sport and physical activity is an integral part of our communities and our Province’s overall health and well-being. For 2020, I look forward to the continued growth and interest in the sport of baseball. I encourage people of all ages and skill levels to be active and enjoy the great sport of baseball. Now, it is time to get ready to Play Ball! Ron Van Keulen | President, Baseball Alberta CANADIAN FEDERATION OF AMATEUR BASEBALL 2212 Gladwin Crescent, Suite A7 | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada | K1B 5N4 Phone: (613) 748-5606 Message from the President Whether a player, coach, official, umpire, board member, sponsor or volunteer, you play a valuable and essential role in the development and improvement of baseball all over the province and in Canada. We appreciate the support of Baseball Alberta in helping us grow this game nationally and becoming the summer sport of choice for thousands of Canadians each year. Alberta continues to perform on the national level bringing home two medals at Baseball Canada National Championships in 2019 including silver at the 16U Girls Nationals and a bronze at the Women’s Invitational. Internationally, no less than five Albertans helped Canada capture the bronze medal in Mexico and qualify for the next Women’s World Cup while Calgary native Mike Soroka continued to make Albertans proud with his strong rookie performance with the Atlanta Braves. In 2020 we look forward to Alberta hosting the Baseball Canada Cup in Fort McMurray, along with the 15U Boys Ray Carter Cup in Okotoks. I know the constant challenges all of us face with limited budgets but everyone from the local administrator right up to the provincial office should share in the success that Canada is able to show at the international level. Your development and contributions are not ignored, as we recognize and appreciate the strides taken and the efforts made at your local and provincial levels. I congratulate you on all of your service and accomplishments to date, and I encourage you to continue down the impressive road you’ve paved thus far. I have seen the passion for baseball in the province of Alberta and have no doubt that it will continue throughout a very successful 2020.
