He was named to the position on April 17, 2018 after serving as interim head coach for the previous four months. Last spring, Jenkins oversaw arguably the program’s best season as a Division I member. The Skyhawks tied for their most victories in the Division I Era (since 1993) and not only advanced to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship tournament for just the fourth time in school history, but also won their opening round game - marking the second postseason win since joining the Division I ranks. UT Martin shattered school records in OVC wins (12), games played (56), fielding percentage (.969), putouts (1,441), saves (17), in- nings pitched (480.1) and pitching strikeouts (431) in 2019. The Skyhawk offense crushed 48 home runs (third-most in school history) and also pitched to the school’s lowest single-season ERA since 2006, leading the OVC with five shutouts. Jenkins coached a pair of 2019 All-OVC second team selections in Jordan Stoner and Nick Wohlbold. Stoner became the first Skyhawk to ever take home back-to-back All-OVC accolades and just the second player in UT Martin history to win two All-OVC selections in a career. Wohlbold ranked 11th nationally with 13 saves and was just the third UT Martin pitcher to ever earn an All-OVC nod (first since 2010). In his first year at UT Martin, Jenkins helped mold a trio of All-OVC honorees in Stoner (first team), Blake Davis (All-Newcomer) and Ethan Whitley (All-Newcomer). He led the squad to victories over No. 13 ranked Southern Miss and against Tennessee Tech (who finished ranked No. 11 nationally after winning 53 games and advancing to a NCAA Super Regional). Whitley would also go on to be named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American in 2018. He was one of only nine first basemen in the nation to collect the prestigious award while he became just the fifth Skyhawk to collect Freshman All-American status. Jenkins joined the UT Martin staff in July after spending the 2017 season at the College of Charleston, where he served as an assistant under head coach Matt Heath working with both hitters and pitchers. Jenkins coached five All-Colonial Athletic Association honorees and also tutored a Major League Baseball draft pick in 2017. A Millbrook, Ala. native, Jenkins was a four-year letterman for the Auburn Tigers from 2006-10 as a catcher, playing under head coach- es Tom Slater and John Pawlowski.

Head Coach Marlin Ikenberry Head Coach Marlin Ikenberry VMI ‘95 Sixth Season 143-132 Career Record Winningest Coach In Program History ver the past five seasons, the VMI baseball program has enjoyed unprecedented success. Winning games against top-ten teams, receiving national rankings and being regarded as one of the top programs in the Ostate and in the region are now attributes of a program built under head coach Marlin Ikenberry. Ikenberry enters his sixth season at the helm of the program as the winningest coach in the history of VMI baseball. The 2008 season saw the Keydets post their third-consecutive winning campaign, a feat not accomplished in the past 52 years of the program, while VMI also defeated a ranked team for the fourth-straight season. Also during the year, the Keydets went 14-7 in the Big South, the first winning league mark since VMI joined the confer- ence in 2003. In 2007, Ikenberry guided his squad to a 34-21 record, marking the third-straight season the team had broken the school record for wins, while also knock- ing off a pair of top-ten teams for the first time in program history. As a result,VMI baseball earned its first-ever national ranking, being tabbed 30th in the coun- try by Collegiate Baseball in back-to-back weeks while also receiving votes in the Writers’ Poll. Marlin Ikenberry was named head coach on July 22, 2003, being promoted to the top spot in the program after former head coach Tom Slater departed VMI in the summer of 2003 to accept a coaching position at the University of Florida.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 44, No. 6, Dec. 16, 2005) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Todd Lamb Holiday Greetings to everyone! Did the holidays sneak up on you this year? Somehow, I was able to find time to write this before I start my holiday shopping. Of course, don’t tell my wife. We still have a while before the season starts. Thank goodness because as I write this, Columbus is getting between two and four inches of snow. Forgive me if I have a difficult time thinking about college baseball right now. I keep trying to remind myself I’ll be traveling with our baseball team to Florida four times in February and March so my winter won’t be quite as long. By now you should have received the NCBWA Preseason All-America teams we announced Tuesday, Dec. 13. Congratulations to everyone who had a student-athlete named to one of our three teams. We released the preseason All-America teams early so SIDs have time to include them in media guide bios and media members can include the information in stories. The teams are included in this newsletter. I know I’m plugging away at our media guide this week and next before we head off to our bowl game against Notre Dame. In the near future, we’ll be sending out information about how to make nominations for the second annual NCBWA Stopper of the Year. Dave Fanucchi with USA Baseball will be heading up the award this year.

This paper analyzes the impact of the tax as a budget constraint on teams’ ability to reward and retain high performing players. In contrast to other papers, we use wins above replacement (WAR), a popular sabermetrics statistic, to measure performance. Using this metric, we quantify the number of top performers, how this performance is rewarded with salary, and how salary impacts players’ mobility decisions. We conclude that when using WAR, the distribution of performance is not heavy tailed and rather follows an exponential distribution.
