Being an amateur comic artist myself, i really enjoyed my time going through this art book, the different explanations for each design is insanely helpful and it includes sections on all 3 games. But my only problem is the detail for the mass effect 3's art, because it really is lacking since its merely as deep as the others and lacks the different steps that ultimately makes the character especially for Kaiden and Ashley. The Art of the Mass Effect Universe (Book Review) - Gaming Nexus At the top left is an early concept for Saren, depicting him as an older, physically weaker character who still possesses incredibly powerful biotics. We ultimately decided that, unlike most turians, Saren would not have tattoos. We went with a distinctive crest and visible Reaper machinery to reflect his indoctrination. We eventually decided to show signs of severe indoctrination and Reaper cybernetics by giving him a mechanical arm. His final appearance was kept similar to other The Art of the Mass Effect Universe, allowing him to blend in to society rather than be an obvious monstrosity. We made many thumbnail drawings for early Thane concepts. Early in development, concept artists are given as much freedom as possible. For Thane, some drew upon lizards or birds of paradise for inspiration. Later refinements led to a mixture of aquatic and reptilian characteristics. Also included are some concepts for jewelry on his face and neck. Only his necklace made it into the final game. Closing in on The Art of the Mass Effect Universe final concept, the artists used an open-collared look for a rebellious vibe. Early attempts to remove the jacket because of animation concerns ended up destroying the entire design. Ashley, Kaidan, and Liara were meant to be love interests throughout all three parts of the trilogy. After taking them away from players in Mass Effect 2they were ready for a passionate return in Mass Effect 3. We tried many hairstyles for Ashley. Ultimately the team decided on a less formal look, appropriate since she and Shepard are well acquainted by Mass Effect 3. We wanted to change that. The armor went through many slight changes as we figured out the Alliance colors for human male characters. Just a Tumblr idea that was born out of boredom and too much time on my hands; here you will find a collection of some of the amazing artworks in the Mass Effect artbooks that were published through Dark Horse Comics. Note: Feel free to remove the added text when reblogging, I just figured it wouldn't hurt to type it down, for those of us who can't read small type all that well. Note 2: There's no specific order in which these are posted. Just as I have fun editing them. Though feel free to send in requests and I will post them asap for you! The Art of the Mass Effect Universe. S A R E N At the top left is an early concept for Saren, depicting him as an older, physically weaker character who still possesses incredibly powerful biotics. A S A R I To add a familiar element of science-fiction The Art of the Mass Effect Universe, we decided one of the main species in Mass Effect would be a race of beautiful, blue alien girls. An extensive exploration of the idea led to the asari appearing exotic and alien while still having some human qualities, which allowed them to be desirable as potential love interests. The original inspiration of the scalp tentacles was to evoke the image of women emerging from the water with her hair swept back. Asari clothing was to be alluring and sexy but with a sense of class and style — more of a Hollywood red-carpet feel than that of a stripper except for the asari who were, in fact, strippers. Once we established the general look of the asari, we examined the fine details, like the scalp tentacles. We needed to create one alien who would, for a time, be the only example of her species. All we knew about the quarians The Art of the Mass Effect Universe that they were a scavenger race that created the geth. Eventually, we decided on a look for the geth that influenced the lower quarian drawings. The Art of the Mass Effect Universe was to have her face covered by a mask, tantalizing the player, who could barely make out the shape of her eyes, but no more. The breathing mask and clothing became the enviro-suit..

Thesis Hidden Options and Player Pushback: Rhetoric of Mass Effect 2 Submitted by Rebekah Robson-May Department of English In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2011 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Sarah Jane Sloane Carrie Lamanna Jennifer Cross Copyright by Rebekah Robson-May, 2011 All Rights Reserved Abstract Hidden Options and Player Pushback: Rhetoric of Mass Effect 2 This thesis is an exploration of gender construction within the digital gaming subculture of the United States in the early 21st century. Using the 2010 game Mass Effect 2 as an organizing theme and central focus, the thesis examines how gender is constructed within this single-player role-playing game; how marketing materials reveal expectations about audience for this game and two other single-player role- playing games released in 2010 (Fable III and Final Fantasy XIII); and how online communities related to games, particularly to Mass Effect 2, both reinforce normative assumptions and attitudes about gender for players of digital games and characters within the games, and how they offer opportunities for the subversion and disruption of these normative models. Theories from Judith Butler and from Candace West and Don Zimmerman provide the primary basis for exploring gender construction. To examine the effects of digital games on literacy and learning, James Paul Gee’s work is used extensively. Additional discussion utilizes online fan and gamer posts. Insights about games, their marketing, and the broader community are drawn from a number of perspectives, in- cluding autoethnography, visual rhetoric, the principles of interpreting visual art, and a study of theatrical costume design.

Journal for Computer Game Culture. 2008; 2; 2; 289-292 Mass(ively) Effect(ive): Emotional Connections, Choice, and Humanity NATALIE M. WARD In Mass Effect, humanity (called Systems Alliance) is a newcomer to the galactic community. In keeping with history, the humans of the future begin heavily colonizing space after discovering the Mass Relay system on Mars. A technological remnant from an earlier species known as the Protheans, the Mass Relay facilitates almost instantaneous travel across space. Human colonisation eventually leads to the First Contact War when an alien species, known as the Turian, occupy the human colony of Shanxi. Swift to respond, the humans delivered a stunning defeat. Attempting to avoid an all out war, the Citadel Council, the galaxy’s governing body, brokered peace. As one of humanities leading figures, Commander Shepherd of the SSV Normandy, you are seen as an ambassador and the species future hope of attaining the highest honour of installing one of his or her own as a Spectre. BioWare has given players the option of fully customizing their own Commander Shepherd. In addition to appearance, gender, abilities, and personal history, players can choose from six character classes including soldier, engineer, adept, infiltrator, sentinel, and vanguard. Unlike most games, all in-game decisions cause story to change, making players as much an author of the game as they are a player. Taking Knights of the Old Republic’s morality system to a whole new level, Mass Effect forces you to choose your actions, whether Machiavellian (Renegade) or Boy Scout (Paragon), causing an immediate effect in the game world.

  • Narrativized Video Games Playing Cultural Influences And
Narrativized Video Games: Playing Cultural Influences and Intentionalities By Sâmia Alves Pedraça A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Humanities Computing University of Alberta © Sâmia Alves Pedraça, 2015 Abstract This thesis focuses on story-based games that address in-game complex social issues in order to map their narrative affordances and decode their intentionality. That is, my main goal is to identify the affordances and resources that construct and structure a game narrative, as well as to analyze the capability of games to present symbolic representations. Video games are demonstrating great potential for the dissemination of ideas, a potential that is as powerful as any other cultural product. Sophisticated game narratives provide highly interactive environments that make a difference in players’ experiences, since players must act within the fictional world. Through immersion and agency, players make their in-game choices; they act in favour of a side, an interest, a cause, or an ideology. Unlike other media that require only the viewers’ passive attention, a digital game is an interactive medium that demands a player’s constant awareness and input. Consequently, the impact of the game’s arguments on its audience can be enormous, perhaps even as powerful as the effect of the industry of cinema or television on society, both of which are considered by media theorists as playing a highly influential role in the process of shaping social behaviours and spreading western culture to the rest of the world. In this research, I will be examining a group of games that are known as the Mass Effect trilogy (BioWare, 2012).

  • Fragmentation, Fabrication, and Composite Identity in the Hunger Games and the Mass Effect Trilogy
1 Real or Not Real: Fragmentation, Fabrication, and Composite Identity in The Hunger Games and the Mass Effect Trilogy A Thesis Submitted to The Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences In Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Arts in English By Tessanna Heléna Curtis 6 September 2016 2 Liberty University College of Arts and Sciences Master of Arts in English ________________________________________________________________________ Marybeth Baggett, Ph.D. Date Thesis Chair ________________________________________________________________________ Stephen Bell, Ph.D. Date Committee Member ________________________________________________________________________ Brian Melton, Ph.D. Date Committee Member 3 Abstract As one glance at box office ratings from the past decade can attest to, twenty-first century Western society seems particularly fixated on coming-of-age stories. These stories reflect the quintessential search for identity, as explained by developmental psychologist Erik Erikson. As Erikson argues throughout his works, the fundamental task of the individual on his journey to becoming a healthy, mature adult is the formation of a personal identity and sense of self that is both unified and whole. What seems particularly ironic, however, is that these coming-of-age stories are released into a culture that is largely dismissive of Erikson’s theory of identity. Instead, theorists such as Jason Zingsheim insist on the mutability of human beings, arguing that identity is plural rather than singular and that contemporary society has made it impossible for the individual to develop an integrated sense of self. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy, however, reveal that the gulf between Erikson’s theory of the self and postmodern theories of identity may not be as large as typically thought.
