  • A Comparative Study of After-Match Reports on 'Lost'and 'Won'football
International Journal of Applied Linguistics & English Literature ISSN 2200-3592 (Print), ISSN 2200-3452 (Online) Vol. 4 No. 1; January 2015 Copyright © Australian International Academic Centre, Australia A Comparative Study Of After-match Reports On ‘Lost’ And ‘Won’ Football Games Within The Framework Of Critical Discourse Analysis Biook Behnam Department of English, Islamic Azad University, Tabriz, Iran E-mail: [email protected] Hasan Jahanban Isfahlan (Corresponding Author) Department of English, Islamic Azad University, Tabriz, Iran E-mail: [email protected] Received: 09-07-2014 Accepted: 02-09-2014 Published: 01-01-2015 doi:10.7575/aiac.ijalel.v.4n.1p.115 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.7575/aiac.ijalel.v.4n.1p.115 Abstract In spite of the obvious differences in research styles, all critical discourse analysts aim at exploring the role of discourse in the production and reproduction of power relations within social structures. Nowadays, after-match written reports are prepared immediately after every football match and provide the readers with the apparently objective representations of important events and occurrences of the game. The authors of this paper analyzed four after-match reports (retrieved from Manchester United’s own website), two regarding their lost games and two on their won games. Hodge and Kress’s (1996) framework was followed in the analysis of the grammatical features of the texts at hand. Also, taking into consideration the pivotal role of lexicalization as one dimension of the textualization process (Fairclough, 2012), vocabulary and more specifically the choice of specific verbs, nouns, adverbs and noun or noun phrase modification were examined.

Handbook For journalists covering the 2018 World Cup in Russia 2018 World Cup in Russia Editorial The other side of the World Cup in Russia When someone says that sport and politics are not affiliated, there is reason to be on guard. Among those who mention this lack of affiliation is the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino. Another is Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Bjørn Engesland Norwegian Helsinki Committee It would be nice if sport took place in a secluded world, where power, conflict, money, cheating and crimes were non-existent. But history does not support such a perspective. During the Peloponnesian war, Sparta was expelled from the Olympics because the host city was in an alliance with the Spartans’ enemy, Athens. This happened in 424 BC. Little has changed since – politics and sports are still closely John Peder Egenæs connected. Amnesty International Norway Ask yourself why FIFA and Putin refuse to acknowledge this fact. The purpose of this manual is not to destroy enthusiasm about the world’s biggest sporting event, but to provide background, much of which is well-known to most. In addition, we give concrete tips about people and organisations who can come in handy for journalists looking for independent, local sources. Silje Ask Lundberg Naturvernforbundet Independent Russian activists and journalists operate at a risk, but at the same time they remain professional. In fact, cooperation with local journalists contributed to the Norwegian football magazine Josimar’s disclosure of slavery at the Zenit Arena in St. Petersburg. The expose gained great attention worldwide. The topics we are highlighting – such as human rights, corruption, racism, Gaute Eiterjord propaganda, environmental issues and persecution of LGBTIs (lesbian, gay, bisexual, Natur og Ungdom trans- and intersex persons) – make up some of the context surrounding the World Cup in Russia.

The effective use of heritage sites of the major sporting events in Russia OLEG ALEKSANDROVICH BUNAKOV1 , DMITRY VLADIMIROVICH RODNYANSKY1, BORIS MOJSHEVICH EIDELMAN1, ELENA VALERIEVNA GRIGORIEVA1, TIMOFEY VASILYEVICH BASHLYKOV2 1Institute of Management, Economics and Finance, Kazan Federal University, Russian Federation 2Department of Economics, Management and Marketing, Kazan Federal University, Russian Federation ABSTRACT This article dwells on the positive and negative experience of using facilities remaining after the major sporting events in the country. The authors analyse the use of stadiums built for the FIFA World Cup, as well as the facilities of Kazan involved during the Universiade 2013. The research resulted in the conclusion about the necessity as far back at the designing stage to study both the relevancy of the sporting venue during the event and its potential usage afterwards. The authors make a point that there is a positive emotional effect, which is revealed in the growth of tourism, and increasing the attractiveness of the territory for local residents. The results obtained can be useful for cities and countries that have yet to host major sports events. Keywords: Heritage sites; Effective use; Sporting events.
