The award is open to festivals that contribute to the establishment of a city’s identity as well as to the citizens’ identification with their city, their district, or their quarter. This includes the citizens’ participation starting with the input of ideas regarding the organization up to specific personal contributions when realizing the festival. The town festival is to be characterized by specific creativity during the planning phase and the organization, and be borne by the general public.

FOUNDATION AWARD Annually, the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation honors projects of different categories in cities and municipalities that have a special best practice character and thus are recommended for imitation. Therefore, each year the Foundation calls for entries by cities, municipalities, institutions, universities, associations, and private persons for its Europe-wide competition. A jury with independent experts assesses the applications and selects the winner. In the past, prizes and acknowledgements were awarded for particularly innovative and successful concepts in museums, inner-city residences, sports facilities, or playgrounds and leisure areas.

For the 13th time, the Foundation invites to its annual city conference in Berlin. Representative from politics, governments, architecture, economics, science, culture, and sports will discuss current issues on which cities and municipalities need to find answers. The focus is thereby placed on the exchange of best practices. Many renowned personalities have already been our guests and held speeches, among them: Jürgen Klopp, Prof. Dr. Michael Steinbrecher The Foundation’s conference 2012 in Frankfurt

Since its establishment, the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation has initiated and sup- ported numerous best practice projects, among them the illumination of the Reichstag building in Berlin and of the Rhine banks in Cologne, the design of the Krupp-Park in Essen, and the revi-taliza- tion of the Jungfernstieg promenade in Hamburg and the St. Nicholas chur- chyard in Leipzig. The funding volume amounts to around 27 million euros.

The Foundation has recently com- pleted a nationwide project together with Deutsche Bahn, the Chamber of Han- Hagen, Wehringhauser Straße dicrafts (HWK), and the company Philips: the illumination of railway subways.

It was the target to revitalize dark public space artistically and to increase the citizens’ perception of safety. At the same time, energy consumption and electricity costs were reduced due to the applica- tion of modern light technology.

The result: The Foundation supported the illumination of 30 railway subways in 23 cities with an overall volume of around three quarters of a million euros. Helmstedt, Magdeburger Tor Moers, Hornberger Straße
