Trinity Sunday

16th June, 2019

Welcome

On behalf of everyone at St. John’s, Toorak, a very warm welcome to this church and faith community. St. John’s welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or background.

This is a wonderful and historic church, founded in 1859, and celebrating our 160th year! We are part of the Anglican Church of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, comprised of 80 million people.

Regular services of worship are held each Sunday at 8am and 10am, Wednesday at 7pm, and Thursday at 12.15pm. All are welcome. Services are followed by times of fellowship over food and drinks to which everyone is also welcome.

This church actively follows Jesus’ command to love God, love one’s neighbour and to care for all people. Our clergy and parishioners regularly visit the sick, home-bound, and the dying. We care for the poor and needy through service and charitable giving, through our Opportunity Shop run in partnership with the local Catholic and Uniting churches, and by supporting the work of Anglicare, The Brotherhood of St. Laurence and The Anglican Board of Mission. Our clergy regularly baptise new members of the church, preside at weddings and care for the grieving through our funeral ministry. If we can be of service to you or your family, please do not hesitate to get in touch. If you would like to give of your time and talents in the service of others, please also contact the church and we will gladly welcome your contribution.

If you’re visiting for the first time do please introduce yourself to a welcomer or member of the clergy, and fill out the blue ‘Welcome’ card found at the end of every pew so we can stay in touch with you.

The 8am service begins with the Introductory Rite below. The 10am service begins with the processional hymn 1 32

INTRODUCTORY RITE please stand

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Hymn 132 ‘Holy, holy, holy’ At 8am, first & third verses only

The Collect for Purity Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' Jesus said: 'This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ A brief silence is kept Let us therefore bring our sins before the one true God, in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Absolution pronounced by the celebrant

Gloria in Excelsis at 8am said together, at 10am sung with the choir Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. 3

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect for Trinity Sunday The celebrant prays the collect, after which all are seated

The Children’s Address At the 10am service, all children are invited to join together at the chancel step

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The First Lesson Proverbs 8.1-4, 22-31 Read at 8am by Cindy Kalai; and at 10am read by James Simpson 1 D oes not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? 2 O n the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3 b eside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she 4 22 cries out: ‘ To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. T he Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long 23 ago. A ges ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24 W hen there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no 25 springs abounding with water. B efore the mountains had been shaped, 26 before the hills, I was brought forth— w hen he had not yet made earth 27 and fields, or the world’s first bits of soil. W hen he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 w hen he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains 29 of the deep, w hen he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations 30 of the earth, t hen I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily 31 his delight, rejoicing before him always, r ejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

4

Psalter Psalm 8 said together at 8am, sung by the choir at 10am 1 O Lord our Governor: how glorious is your name in all the earth! 2 Your majesty above the heavens is yet recounted: by the mouths of babes and sucklings. 3 You have founded a strong defence against your adversaries: to quell the enemy and the avenger. 4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers: the moon and the stars which you have set in order, 5 What are we, that you should be mindful of us: what are we, that you should care for us? 6 Yet you have made us little less than gods: and have crowned us with glory and honour. 7 You have given us dominion over your handiwork: and have put all things in subjection beneath our feet, 8 All sheep and oxen: and all the creatures of the field, 9 The birds of the air and the fish of the sea: and everything that moves in the pathways of the great waters. 10 O Lord our Governor: how glorious is your name in all the earth! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen The Second Lesson Romans 5.1-5 Volunteer reader required at 8am, and Jenny Smith at 10am 1 T herefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God 2 through our Lord Jesus Christ, t hrough whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the 3 glory of God. A nd not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, 4 knowing that suffering produces endurance, a nd endurance produces 5 character, and character produces hope, a nd hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

At the 10am service please stand for the Gradual Hymn

5

Gradual Hymn (At 10am only) 447 ‘Thou whose almighty word’ First and fourth verses only sung

At both services we stand and turn to face the gospel as it is read

The Gospel John 16.12-15 The Holy Gospel according to St. John, Chapter 16, commencing at verse twelve. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 12 ‘ I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 W hen the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he 14 will declare to you the things that are to come. H e will glorify me, 15 because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. A ll that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Sermon The Assistant Curate

Anthem Cum Sancto Spiritu [Gloria in D]Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) Nicene Creed said together, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6

The Prayers of the People kneeling At 8am by Keiron Jones and at 10am by John Horan

The Prayers end with the following Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Greeting of Peace standing

We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

All share with each other the sign of peace, customarily shaking hands with those around them, and saying, ‘Peace be with you’

Music Notes

Vivaldi wrote two settings of the Gloria in Excelsis. The cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris text forms the final movement of the popular setting in D. You alone are the Most High Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father culminates the ascription to the unknowable, which we honour today as the Trinity.

An Organ Plus Series of concerts is to be held in the Parish Church on the Fifth Sundays from 12pm to 1pm, with refreshments to conclude.

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase one of the finest parish organs in the country, and our lively parish community. The programs are carefully designed to highlight the associated artist, the parish organ in solo and accompaniment roles, as well as a wide variety of styles and repertoire.

Please take flyers and distribute them around the community. The suggested donation for the event is $20, however we encourage larger donations on the day. Book early! https://www.trybooking.com/BCZWQ

If you’d like to sponsor one of more of the concerts this will considerably aid the project, which has as an important underpinning to raise funds. This can be added to the title of the Concert eg the Una Corda Concert.

The tax-deductible Gibb Fund is a wonderful vehicle through which to express your thanks, and to aid the parish in keeping this amazing heritage instrument in top condition and working order. This concert is a great extra opportunity to introduce visitors to the beautiful parish church we name as our own.

2019 Diocesan Synod - call for Lay Representatives *UPDATE* In the Anglican Church, a diocese is governed by a synod (pr. [sin-uh d]), that is, a acting with the advice and consent of representatives of the clergy and laity of the diocese. The presiding bishop (in the case of the Diocese of Melbourne, the Archbishop) calls the synod to meet, usually annually, to discuss, debate and decide on various matters of business such as the Diocesan budget, legislation for consideration by the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Australia, and other issues that concern the church. The synod also elects people to various committees and boards in the Diocese, as well as choosing General Synod representatives. The synod is divided into the House of Clergy, and the House of Laity. All clergy licensed to the Diocese of Melbourne are automatically members of the synod. Parishes elect lay synod representatives from their congregation. The number of representatives from each parish depends on the structure and size of the parish. This year Synod meets at St. Paul’s Cathedral from Wednesday 16 October (7-10pm), Thursday 17 October (7-10pm), Friday 18 October (7-10pm) and Saturday 19 October (10am-5pm (although often finishes earlier)). Synod commences with a grand and moving service in the Cathedral on the Wednesday evening and a presidential Address by the Archbishop and Primate. Each evening is marked by interesting and often vigorous debate and speakers and often major decisions about the life of the church are made. It is possible depending upon the agenda to attend some and not all of the proceedings. At the time of going to print, nominations received match the number of positions available. An official announcement will be made at the appropriate time. Thank you to those parishioners who are willing to serve St. John’s and the Diocese of Melbourne in this capacity.

Prevention of Violence Against Women Program at St. John’s The Diocese of Melbourne’s Preventing Violence Against Women Program (of which our Vicar is a Taskforce member) is launching its training program in July, offering training days across the Diocese for active clergy and key lay leaders in parishes. 12

Violence against women is a serious and widespread issue in Australia. With the right knowledge and skills, church leaders can play an important and influential role in preventing violence against women and supporting people who experience family violence. Such training is critical in making our churches safer spaces. The hope is that St. John’s will send not only our active clergy but will also nominate a female lay leader to attend the training and then take on the role of Family Safety Officer in the church, being a point of contact for anyone in the church to seek further information. Other key lay leaders we wish to send are of course welcome. If you are interested in serving the church in this important capacity please contact the Assistant Curate [email protected]

Vicar on Annual Leave Our Vicar Peter will be on leave from Saturday 8 June until Wednesday 27 June inclusive. Peter will not be responding to emails during this period. Any urgent matters are to be directed to the parish office in his absence.

Prayers for Christian Unity On Thursday 27 June at 10.00am at St John’s.

SAVE THE DATE - Sunday 21 July 12pm Winter Warmer lunch at a Chinese Restaurant. Bookings and payment will be through Trybooking. Details to be provided soon. This is a great event to invite family and friends to be part of.

War Memorial Sub-Committee St John’s is looking for 2-3 volunteers to serve on a short-term sub-committee. These parishioners would work with our neighbours the Toorak R.S.L sub-branch to apply for a Federal Government grant to refurbish the War Memorial outside the church. If you are interested in being a part of this important project or would like more information please contact the Curate.
