13th Annual Chanukiah Making Challenge

One of Rabbi Zinkow’s favorite Chanukah traditions! School age children are encouraged to come up with a crazy chanukiah design and then make it out of “raw” materials (no Legos, Tinker Toys, Kinnex, etc.) The chanukiah should be mostly functional. Entries should have the student’s name on it, and it must be submitted to Rabbi Zinkow’s office no later than Wednesday, December 14. The chanukiot will then be cleverly named and displayed by Rabbi Zinkow during services on Friday, December 16. All entries will receive an award and a small gift! So put your creative thinking cap on and start building! We can’t wait to see all of the wonderful creations you come up with.

Temple Israel 3 Education Religious School

Finding a way to create a Jewish space in your life isn't always easy. But as with most difficult things, Judaism doesn't expect you to do it alone. Jewish rituals require us to come together to pray, mourn, celebrate a new life or a holiday.

Religious School can serve the very same purpose; it can encourage you to step outside of your home and into the greater Jewish community. It can be the conduit between your Temple and your family. Religious School can provide the opportunity to bring families together in the pursuit of Jewish learning as well as provide a community. We hope that we have been a part of helping you and your family create that Jewish space in your home!

L’shalom,

Beata Abraham

Kindling the Festival Lights The Chanukah Blessings

This year Chanukah begins at sundown on Friday, December 23. Candles are added to the chanukiah from right to left but are kindled from left to right. The newest candle is always lit first. First light the Shamash (the helper candles, set higher or lower than all the rest of the candles); then use it to kindle the rest of the Chanukah lights. Temple Israel 5 In Our Congregation A Note from the Cantor Temple Israel Senior Group Top 10 Chanukah Hits!

All one has to do is close their eyes as they turn Annual on the radio, walk into a shopping mall or go into the grocery store to know what time of year it is! Somehow the ubiquitous Christmas music Chanukah that fills our ears paints the backdrop of our lives all December long. Forced upon our senses, the Concert Cantor Bat-Ami Moses holiday carols remind me of a constant drone following our every move. You may have heard with Cantor Moses of the expression “nose blind,” when we cease to smell something as soon as we become accustom to it. I’d like to create another expression, “ear blindness,” when the background holiday music Wednesday, December 14 doesn’t offend us any longer and we suddenly find ourselves singing along with the choir, “ Joy to the World!” 11:30 AM at Temple Israel Truth be known, even your Cantor can be caught belting out, “Oh Holy Night,” on occasion. 5. The LeeVees: “How Do You Spell Channukkahh” (Hanukah Rocks) This band is fronted by Adam Gardner (from Guster) and Dave Schneider (from the Zambonis) who, when together, make rockin’ Hanukkah music on their album Hanukah Rocks.

6. Peter, Paul & Mary, “” (Around the Campfire) This is one of my favorite songs by my favorite trios. It is a classic!

7. Julie Silver, “Chanukah Blessings” (It’s Chanukah Time) This is a more traditional Hanukkah album with all of the classic songs you might remember from when you were a kid. She’s got a beautiful and easy to sing-along-with rendition of the Hanukkah blessings.

8. Mare Winningham, “A Convert Jig” (Refuge Rock Sublime) This isn’t really a Hanukkah song, but Mare Winningham, who you might remember from such films as St. Elmo’s Fire, Turner & Hooch, and Wyatt Earp, converted to Judaism in 2003 and came out with her own Jewish album. She was a congregant at my old synagogue in Manhattan. I’m so happy she made this list!

9. Kenny Ellis, “Sevivon Sov Sov Sov” (Hanukkah Swings) For a different take on Hanukkah, check out this album by Kenny Ellis. It makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time to the Big Band Era.

10. Peter & Ellen Allard, “Judah Maccabee, The Hammer” (Sing Shalom: Songs for the Jewish Holidays) The Allards are the king and queen of Jewish preschool music, so it’s only natural that they’d make this top 10 list.

Happy Listening! And Happy Hanukkah filled with light, laughter, latkas and song!

Temple Israel 9 Temple Israel Foundation End-of-the-Year Charitable Giving

It is appropriate that we turn to you at this time of year, seeking your help to make an annual gift to the Temple Israel Foundation as it rededicates and renews itself so the Foundation’s resources can benefit the Temple. When your Foundation gift is combined with others, just like the Chanukah miracle stretched the oil for eight days, your gift increases in value and purpose.

Several weeks ago, a letter was mailed to you detailing the Temple Israel Foundation’s Annual Campaign whose purpose is to provide a perpetual stream of funding to the Temple. Each contribution provides another opportunity for Temple Israel to Create Community, Nurture Souls and Repair the World.

How does Temple Israel benefit from the Foundation’s support? In the spirit of Chanukah, this list supports a mere eight areas which receive partial Foundation funding: Religious/Hebrew School Education for our youth

 Social Justice programs  Adult Jewish Education programs  Cantorial music & music programs  Camp Scholarships for Jewish overnight camps  Art & Archives Support  Jewish Outreach to families  Children’s/Youth programming

Temple Israel has thrived for over 170 years because of the strength and commitment of our members. We encour- age you to consider a gift to the Temple Israel Foundation this year. Consider adding your flame – your check – to those of other congregants and to make a year-end gift * to Temple Israel Foundation which will allow our flame to grow ever brighter. We do not have the luxury of relying solely on God’s miracles to keep our candles lit. We must change, and we must foster a wider, more generous culture of giving to ensure the survival of our beloved Temple. It is appropriate to do so now, during our holiday of gift-giving and during the Foundation’s Annual Gift Campaign. Thank you for your trust and for your continuing support of our congregation.

Sincerely, Temple Israel Foundation

Mark Coffey Elaine Tenenbaum President Executive Director
