Mission Statement Parish of Kilmovee Church of the St. Celsus’ Church, Immaculate Kilkelly “A family of families” Conception, Kilmovee St. Patrick’s Church, St. Joseph’s Church Glann Urlaur MISSION STATEMENT he Parish of Kilmovee is a Christian Community, committed to making everyone welcome through meeting in liturgy, prayer and friendship as we bear witness to the love and Tcompassion of Jesus Christ. Fáilte roimh gach éinne. 5th Sunday of Lent - 18th March 2018 On Sunday next, Palm Sunday, the priests of our Parish Cluster (Bohola, Carracastle, Charlestown, Kilmovee, Kiltimagh and Swinford) will be available to celebrate with you the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There will be a priest, in some cases two, in each of the Parish Churches of the Cluster. This is an opportunity to celebrate God’s forgiveness as we prepare for the great celebration of Holy Week and Easter. Confessions will take place from 6pm and conclude at 7pm unless there is need to continue beyond that time. The priests of our cluster are Fr Stephen O’Mahony (Bohola), Fr Gerry Davey (Carracastle), Frs Tommy Johnston and John Doherty (Charlestown), Fr Vincent Sherlock (Kilmovee), Frs Michael Quinn and Pat Lynch (Kiltimagh) and Frs Dermot Meehan and Michael Joyce (Swinford). Three of these priests (Frs John Doherty, Pat Lynch and Michael Joyce) are retired but continue to assist in the parishes where they live in retirement. We are indeed lucky to have them and grateful for their willingness to assist with ministry in this cluster. On Palm Sunday evening the priests will travel to parishes within the Cluster to give our parishioners the opportunity of celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation with a priest, other than the usual priest in the parish.     The Famine in Mayo 1845-1850 A Mayo County Library Exhibition 1 Charles Edward Trevelyan, Assistant Secretary to the Treasury directed government relief measures during the famine, meticulously scrutinising all expenditure The Famine in Mayo 1845 - 1850 The Great Famine was one of the defining moments of Irish history. It marked a watershed in the history of the country causing a change so complete in the Irish social and economic fabric, that the people’s sensibilities would never be the same again. No longer could the Irish people trust to the land to provide constant sustenance. No longer could they rely on whatever security of tenure was allowed by the landlords, and more importantly they learned that their English political masters cared little for their plight. The Famine in Mayo is a portrait of the lives and deaths of the people as recorded by witnesses in books, newspapers and official records of that period. 1(a) The Famine in Mayo 1845 - 1850 The Potato Disease e first reports of blight appeared in September of 1845. For one third of the country’s population of eight million, the nutritious lumper potato was pratically the sole article of the diet. In County Mayo, it was estimated that nine tenths of the population depended on it. An acre and a half of land could provide enough potatoes to support a family for most of the year. Any other crops or animals the smallholder raised went to pay rent. A potato famine was a great calamity.     THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

As Knock International Airport is located so near , Swinford is ideally located and provides a gateway to a broad range of tourist attractions. The velorail project is welcome and it is good to see investment in the closed railway as we all know the railway is never going to re-open, however in order that this is not exclusively a pay per use facility and is available in particular for locals to use freely we ask that a parallel path is put in place so the route can double up as velorail and greenway. 284 submissions on the most recent county plan asked for a greenway on this route; the views of those submissions need to be respected.
