Biography

Betty J. Gose Ligon (1921 – 2015) was a journalist, editor, and pilot. She graduated from West Texas State University and wrote for the Amarillo Globe News from 1944 to 1947. Prior to that position, Ligon was the only woman reporter for the International News Service in Dallas. In El Paso, she was a columnist for the El Paso Herald-Post beginning in 1969 and later wrote for El Paso, Inc. and the Southwest Senior. Ligon was a fixture on the El Paso arts scene and regularly attended exhibit openings, music performances, and other social events.

She married Andrew Ligon, Sr. in 1947 and had four children. After her marriage, Ligon earned her pilot’s license and was a member of the El Paso chapter of Ninety-Nines (an international organization of women pilots). In 1997, she flew in the last Powder Puff Derby.
