IMAGINING EVIL: GEORGE MACDONALD’S THE WISE WOMAN: A PARABLE (1875) Colin Manlove George MacDonald has some claim to the title of “a neglected Scottish writer.” A great man and author in his day, he is now largely forgotten in his own country. Only his children’s fairy tales still spark an occasional glimmer of recognition, particularly his At the Back of the North Wind (1870) and The Princess and the Goblin (1872). Recent academic interest in MacDonald as a fantasy writer, and particularly as the forerunner of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, has however begun to rescue him from obscurity, particularly in the U.S.. Here I want to carry on this process by showing the power of a story which where noticed is too often condemned—The Wise Woman: A Parable. -

THE ARMSTRONG BROWNING LIBRARY’S GEORGE MACDONALD COLLECTION Cynthia Burgess he Armstrong Browning Library (ABL) of Baylor University is a nineteenth-centuryT research center committed to a focus on the British-born poets Robert Browning (1812-89) and Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-61). Because of the Brownings’ stature in the literary world of nineteenth-century Britain and America, they became acquainted with most of the famous writers of their era and developed personal friendships with many. Alfred Tennyson, Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, Charles Dickens, Joseph Milsand, Isa Blagden, James Russell Lowell, and Harriet Beecher Stowe were only a few of their intimate friends and correspondents. Over the years, the ABL has broadened its collecting focus to include these and other associated nineteenth-century writers, including George MacDonald, as well as resources that reflect broader aspects of nineteenth-century literature and culture. -

Introduction George MacDonald’s Lilith is usually read as a Gothic fantasy with powerful Christian content. The Gothic element is well brought out by the jacket illustration of the best-selling modern paperback edition, issued by the religious publishers Eerdmans, which amalgamates some of the most powerful Gothic images in the story. Stephen Prickett stresses that it is the “preponderance of image over plot that is the hallmark of the Gothic convention” (Victorian 74). In Lilith, however, the images seem to preponderate only because of their power. The book has a clear story-line. Roderick McGillis suggests that with narrative of the kind found in Lilith, “the emphasis lies not so much on the specific meaning of the narrative as on the quality of the reader’s response” (“George 78 | Docherty MacDonald” 42). But in Lilith, and particularly in the last chapters of the book, the specific meaning of the narrative for readers is wholly dependant upon the quality of their response. -

George MacDonald's Lilith: Whores in Babyland Jennifer Sattaur George MacDonald, over a long literary career and an even longer lifetime, saw a great deal of the later Victorian era. As a Christian of unorthodox beliefs, exiled from his pulpit and forced to preach through his fiction writing instead,1 his work offers a uniquely Christian perspective on both the middle and end of the nineteenth century. Lilith, published in 1895, purportedly came to him as a vision from God. The novel is one of two major fantasies he wrote for an adult audience—he is best known for his children's fairy tales, such as At The Back of the North Wind and The Princess and the Goblin, and the majority of his writing consists of realistic novels. When Lilith first appeared, it was largely condemned as being obscure, difficult, and disturbing.2 It is only more recently that the novel has been recognised as a work of value; C. S. Lewis and G. K. Chesterton, in particular, were vehement in their praises and attributed much influence for their own work to MacDonald.3 The work has also attracted an unusual amount of interest from those seeking to apply Jungian psychoanalytical theory to literature, as the novel's dreamlike-quality and visionary depths are particularly in tune with the spiritual leaning of Jungianism. Lilith is often referred to as the closing chapter of his literary career, and it has the influence of half of the nineteenth century behind it.4 Lilith is much concerned with religion, and is interesting not only for the insights it reveals on MacDonald's life, but also for the way it reacts to the fin de siècle society as MacDonald perceived it. -

LILITH by George MacDonald THE AUTHOR George MacDonald (1824-1905) was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and attended Aberdeen University, studying chemistry. After three years making a living tutoring, he studied for the ministry and became the pastor of a small Congregational church. Soon his congregation became disenchanted with his liberal theology - he had been influenced in his college years by more than the literary aspects of German Romanticism - and he left the ministry after three difficult years. For the rest of his life, he moved from job to job, lecturing, tutoring, and writing, none of which provided sufficient income to support his wife and eleven children. Despite the family’s poverty and the constant need to depend on the help of others, the MacDonalds were known far and wide for their hospitality. George MacDonald died after a lengthy illness in 1905. After writing several books of poems, MacDonald published his first novel, Phantastes , a fantasy, in 1858. His first successful endeavors were his Scottish novels, including Robert Falconer (1868). His children’s stories, which are among his best-known works today, included the novels At the Back of the North Wind (1871), The Princess and the Goblin (1872), The Princess and Curdie (1883), and the collection of Christmas-themed short stories, Gifts of the Child Christ (1882). He returned to fantasy with the publication of Lilith in 1895. MacDonald had been influenced early in life by the German Romantics, having had an opportunity to read their writings while tending the library of a nobleman during his university years. He appreciated the English Romantics as well, and his writings fit very well into that genre. -

Introduction: Phantastes and Present Scholarship “The Soul of Man,” says my father in the unpublished Seekers and Finders, “is the world turned outside in”; and in Paul Faber he speaks more poetically of a little child being a “mirrored universe.” (Greville MacDonald 404) How much Gibbie even then understood of the lovely, eerie old ballad, it is impossible for me to say. [...] Certainly it was the beginning of much. But the waking up of a human soul to know itself in the mirror of its thoughts and feelings, its loves and delights, oppresses me with so heavy a sense of marvel and inexplicable mystery, that when I imagine myself such as Gibbie then was, I cannot imagine myself coming awake. [...] When by slow filmy unveilings, life grew clearer to Gibbie, and he not only knew, but knew that he knew, his thoughts always went back to that day [...]. Then first he saw nature reflected, Narcissus-like, in the mirror of her humanity, her highest self. (Sir Gibbie 97) acDonald’s Phantastes had remained a type of literary “black box” forM nearly one hundred and forty years. Ever since its introduction to the public, little had surfaced regarding two interrelated aspects of importance for an understanding of this puzzling book: its meaning and structure. Because few instances of solid internal meaning or direct references to outside sources were easily extracted from MacDonald’s complex book, many reviewers and later scholars, it seems, concluded that Phantastes had neither plot nor structure, and/or that it was loosely written.1 The critical tide began to turn a little more than a decade ago, after John Docherty and Roderick McGillis convincingly argued for the existence of a structure in Phantastes.
