Our task was to review our parish life; the vitality of the different parishes in the cluster; our finances; the condition of our facilities; and the number of priests that serve the people of ST. CEMETERY NEWS

t. Raymond’s Cemetery continues to be one of the largest parish owned and directed cemeteries in the United States. Each day, the parish provides a parish priest for burial prayers and final commitment ceremonies. The Cemetery is open for visitation seven days per week. With nearly 3,000 burials each year, St. Raymond’s Cemetery continues to expand and offer new burial Sopportunities. Our Mother Seton Mausoleum in the Old Cemetery is almost filled, although some spaces are still available. This building is a private area for interments with a magnificent mosaic of Padre Pio on the interior west wall. You are invited on Tuesday, September 23 at 11:30 a.m. to a special prayer service in honor of St. Padre Pio at the Mother Seton Mausoleum in the Old Cemetery.

There is a soon-to-be com- Our newest burial area is the Our Lady of Hope Cremation Garden with nearly 1,500 pleted Mother Teresa Sec- niches for cremains. When the Cemetery is completely filled, we estimate that there will be more than 500,000 deceased buried in our holy grounds. We celebrate Mass twice each year for the deceased in our Cemetery — on Memorial Day with special prayers for our veterans, and on the Feast of All Souls Day, November 2. These Masses are celebrated under a tent in front of the St. Francis Mausoleum. We also have a monthly Mass celebrated at St. Raymond Church for all who have been buried during the previ- ous month. This parish Mass is usually celebrated on the third Thursday of each month at 12 noon. Speak with Debbie at the rectory office to confirm the date and time, 718-792-4044. Our Cemetery is a beautiful place for prayer, meditation and remembrance of our loved ones who have gone on before us. For personal consultations and visits to the different areas of the Cemetery, please call Marlene at the office, 718-792-1133. St. Raymond Parish WHAT’S NEW AT ST. RAYMOND’S …

Under the direc- tion of two of our associate priests — Monsi- gnor Stephen and Father Fred — our African parishioners meet once a month for prayer, a religious lecture and fellowship. We are grateful for their support of our annual parish feast of St. Raymond Nonnatus with their Afri- can culinary treats, as well as their participa- tion in the life of the parish in so many ways. Welcome!

THE MEXICAN COMMUNITY continues to direct our annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe with a triduum complete with a mariachi band and a solemn Mass on December 12. We thank them, as well as the Pax Christi Sisters, who are from Mexico, for bringing these beautiful fiestas to our parish. Speaking of the Pax Christi Sisters, they have been administering the parish’s re- ligious education program for the past 10 years. The Sisters serve in five different parishes. Here at St. Raymond’s, Sisters Adelina and Eleazar are in charge of the CCD program for our public school students; they also direct the religious education programs for our teenagers and adults who wish to receive the sacraments of initia- tion. The Pax Christi Sisters are bilingual and have special training in catechetics. In addition to directing our annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe in December, the Sisters also coordinate the Hijas de Maria — a program for young teenage girls. The Pax Christi Sisters (left to right): We are blessed to have their services here in the parish. They certainly have become Sr. Maria Lorena Pallares, PCI; Sr. Maria Eleazar Casas, PCI; a part of the St. Raymond family. Sr. Adelina Garcia, PCI; Sr. Maria Cleotilde Resendiz, PCI. PRESENTING THE CLASS OF 2014

On June 6, Raymond Academy for Girls held its graduation for the Class of 2014. Ninety-one young women — the largest graduating class in the Academy’s his- tory — received their high school diplomas from the Academy before their parents, the faculty and the administration. Collectively, Academy graduates earned an astound- ing $6 million dollars in scholarships and grants. On graduation day, Monsignor Graham gave a moving tribute to the class during his homily and at the end of the ceremony, he asked them to mark their calendars for June 6, 2024 — their 10th reunion. Monsignor told the graduates to come back and visit, give advice to their fellow young alumnae and help a student in need. CONGRATULATIONS to the graduates!

TWO AMAZING FIRSTS FOR SRA

BAABA ABAKA-YANKSON, CLASS OF 2014, WINS THE NEW YORK TIMES SCHOLARSHIP hen Baaba Abaka-Yankson came to Saint Raymond Academy from Ghana three years ago, she had a dream of attending Columbia University and be- coming a surgeon. Baaba’s dream is coming true. In September, she will begin her first semester at Columbia University. Baaba is not just a gifted student; she is also a very special young woman. Her teachers and fellow classmates describe Wher deep sense of faith, her genuine humility, her quiet dignity and her profound appreciation of family. Baaba’s senior year was certainly not an easy one. She had many sleepless nights preparing for interviews and writing her essays, as she prepared to make her dream a reality. Well, those sleepless nights paid off! Not only did Baaba win The New York Times Scholarship, a prestigious honor, but she was accepted to Columbia University, Dartmouth, NYU, Barnard, Cornell, Macaulay Honors College at CUNY, Wesleyan, Binghamton, Stony Brook and Brown. This story ends with a quote from one of her college essays. “If I could have a conversation with my adversities, I would thank them for being in my life. Without hardships, I would not have come to uphold hard work and perseverance as the roadmaps to the prosperous future I earnestly work for. I do not view my life as a story of misfortune but as a testament to the strength of a Ghanaian girl who is fighting her way to the American dream.”

THE FIRST GRADUATING CLASS CELEBRATES ITS 50TH REUNION n Saturday, May 3, more than 30 women from the Class of 1964 came back to the Academy to celebrate their 50th reunion. This was a special day not only for them, but also for the Academy because they were the Academy’s first graduating Oclass. The Class of ’64 and SRA will always have a special con- nection to one another. Alumna Helene McArdle Mickowski put it this way, “Our 50th reunion was a joyous afternoon recount- ing memorable times, reconnecting with friends, and giving thanks for the gift of a special education from our parents. We are indebted to Monsignor Graham, Sister Mary Ann D’Antonio and SRA for their generosity in allowing our special class the opportunity to share this momentous occasion at the beautiful Saint Raymond Academy.”
