We have made our members and supporters aware of the consultation and we understand that a significant number of them have responded to the on-line survey. However, many of the questions there are not applicable to an active travel campaign group such as GoBike and thus we offer the following comments: It is important that the High Street and Saltmarket are revitalised and shops, cafes and businesses are attracted to the area but the street environment must be radically improved to encourage people to walk and cycle along the street and spend time there. Currently the street is a four-lane highway with cars, vans, buses travelling through. So what must be done? The pavements must be widened and their surface improved, with unnecessary street furniture removed, to encourage people to walk and window shop, perhaps even sit outside a cafe. Cycle lanes must be introduced; people already cycle along the street, dodging the parked vehicles and those that are speeding and their journeys will be made less hazardous by the provision of cycle lanes. -

The Merchant City... ...open for trade The Merchant City lies at the heart of Glasgow’s City Centre, where historically the tobacco lairds and traders which once made Glasgow the Second City of the Empire came to do business, socialise and build their townhouses ... and later their warehouses. The area still possesses a remarkable consistency, of materials and rhythm and demonstrates a strong civic pride through the number of buildings adorned with carved coats of arms. Despite the area falling victim to the inner city obsolescence that afflicted so many parts of urban Britain in the Twentieth Century, the Merchant City became the scene of a remarkable public sector led renaissance during the 1980’s and was held up internationally as a successful example of how post industrial architecture can re-make itself if events and political wills conspire - to create new solutions and dynamic partnerships. More recently a large part of the area has been designated the focus of an inter agency programme to repair the fabric of its historic architecture and streets. The Merchant City Townscape Heritage Initiative matches funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund with finance from both Glasgow City Council and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow to enable a phased programme of improvements to buildings -

LGBTQ+ people have been a part of Glasgow’s history as long as the city has existed. Although the histories of the LGBTQ+ community are often ignored or not recorded in traditional ways, we can find traces of their lives and experiences. From the court records of male sex workers in the Broomielaw to listings and adverts for club nights in the 2000s, and from memories of the saunas and club scenes of the 1980s to the direct action and activism of LGBTQ+ groups like the Lesbian Avengers. Kelvinhaugh Residences Directions Central Train Station Train Take a low level train to SECC. From SECC Station walk past Peugeot garage; take the first left onto St Vincent Crescent, take the first right on to Corruna Street. At the top of the street turn left (at Ben Nevis Pub) onto Argyle Street. Take the first left onto Kelvinhaugh Street, then first right into Kelvinhaugh Place and Cairncross House. Bus Exit Central Station at the side exit onto Hope Street. Cross Hope Street and take Bus No: 2 to Argyle Street. Leave the Bus on Argyle Street (first stop after Sainsbury’s). Walk back Along Argyle Street and take first right into Kelvinhaugh Street, then first right into Kelvinhaugh Place and Cairncross House. Alternatively you can get a taxi, which will cost approximately £5 - £10. Queen Street Train Station Train Exit the Station onto George Street and follow the signs to Central Station. From Central Station take a lower level train to SSEC. From SECC Station walk past a Peugeot garage, take the first left onto St Vincent Crescent. Take the first right on to Corruna Street. At the top of the street turn left (at Ben Nevis Pub) onto Argyle Street. Take the first left onto Kelvinhaugh Street, then first right into Kelvinhaugh Place and Cairncross House. Bus Exit Queen Street Station and walk to Hope Street by turning right onto George Street, then onto West George Street. At Hope Street take Bus No: 9 or 2 to Argyle Street. Leave bus on Argyle Street (first stop after Sainsbury’s).
