As the fortunes of war shifted, so did borders, populations and national allegiances. In a period of acute and almost constant political crisis, the German government faced issues concerning citizenship, minority rights, religious identity, nationhood and statehood. My dissertation analyses these issues through the prism of the so-called 'Jewish Question'.

SIMFEROV SKA A Jewish Painter between Reform, Lviv National Academy of Arts Judaism, and Zionism: Wachtel’s [email protected] Portrait of Abraham Kohn Abraham Kohn, the first Reform (Progressive) rabbi of Lemberg/Lviv, died at the age of forty-one in 1848 under unclear circumstances.1 His death triggered long-lasting speculations among various members of the Lemberg Jewish community. Was his death a murder and, if it was, than who was guilty? Discussions of that question have lasted until present day. Historians have advanced different answers trying to understand the realities of the Galician Jewish community in the 19th century and the religious life of Lemberg, the center of the eastern province of the Habsburg Austrian Empire, in which Abraham Kohn appeared so vibrantly and disappeared so suddenly. Within the context of the debates around Kohn, so far one aspect has been neglected. In 1902, Wilhelm Wachtel, a young Jewish Galician artist, painted a portrait of Rabbi Kohn – a vivid representation of Kohn that significantly adds to the image of the progressive rabbi in Lemberg collective memory.2 Wachtel presented Kohn as a religious icon, as a saint, and as a quintessential modern figure. Wachtel’s portrait was the only posthumous image of Kohn created fifty-four years after the tragic demise of the rabbi. Taking into account the controversial role of Abraham Kohn as the marginal reformer among the traditionalist majority, why did he reappear in the Lemberg milieu as an iconic figure early in the 20th century? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.1 Overview So spoke Crowfoot, orator of the Blackfoot Confederacy in 1890, above, on his deathbed. Even while this was not identified as poetry at the time, much of the wisdom of this Native American speaker comes across to readers poetically. Similarly, much of the poetry of Native American poets can be read simply as wisdom. Though there was a significant number of tribes, and a tremendous number of people at the time of the European invasion, each tribal language displays simultaneously a distinct identity as well as a variety of individual voices. However, the published poetry from native authors across the vast spectrum of tribal affiliations between the beginning and end of the 20th century reveal three unifying themes: (1) respecting a common reverence for the land from which each tribe came, through ceremonial poetry and songs; (2) respecting past traditions, including rituals, truths, and the words of one’s elders; and (3) expressing political criticism, even activism. Editor Kenneth Rosen writes “There may seem to be a great deal of distance between the Navajo Blessing Way chants and a contemporary poem about the confrontations at Wounded Knee, but it’s really not that far to go”.2 In fact, this curriculum unit around Native American poetry endeavors to keep pace with the ongoing experiences of native people, whose words continue to speak to the land, its mysteries, and its voice.

    SUFFRAGE AND VIRGINIAWOOLF: ‘THE MASS BEHIND THE SINGLE VOICE’ by sowon s. park Virginia Woolf is now widely accepted as a ‘mother’ through whom twenty- ¢rst- century feminists think back, but she was ambivalent towards the su¡ragette movement. Feminist readings of the uneasy relation betweenWoolf and the women’s Downloaded from movement have focused on her practical involvement as a short-lived su¡rage campaigner or as a feminist publisher, and have tended to interpret her disapproving references to contemporary feminists as redemptive self-critique. Nevertheless the apparent contradictions remain largely unresolved. By moving away from Woolf in su¡rage to su¡rage in Woolf, this article argues that her work was in fact deeply http://res.oxfordjournals.org/ rooted at the intellectual centre of the su¡rage movement. Through an examination of the ideas expressed in A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas and of two su¡rage characters, Mary Datchet in Night and Day and Rose Pargiter in TheYears,it establishes how Woolf’s feminist ideas were informed by su¡rage politics, and illumi- nates connections and allegiances as well as highlighting her passionate resistance to a certain kind of feminism. at Bodleian Library on October 20, 2012 I ‘No other element in Woolf’s work has created so much confusion and disagree- mentamongherseriousreadersasherrelationtothewomen’smovement’,noted Alex Zwerdling in 1986.1 Nonetheless the women’s movement is an element more often overlooked than addressed in the present critical climate.
