  • Mandaluyong City, Philippines
MANDALUYONG CITY, PHILIPPINES Case Study (Public Buildings) Project Summary: Manila, the capital of the Republic of the Philippines, has the eighteenth largest metropolitan area in the world, which includes fifteen cities and two municipalities. Mandaluyong City is the smallest city of the cities in Metro Manila, with an area of only twelve square kilometers and a population of over 278,000 people. A public market was located in the heart of Mandaluyong City, on a 7,500 square meters area along Kalentong Road, a main transit route. In 1991, the market was destroyed in a major fire, in large part because most of the structure was made of wood. As a temporary answer for the displaced vendors, the government allowed about 500 of them to set up stalls along the area’s roads and sidewalks. This rapidly proved to be impractical, in that it led to both traffic congestion and sanitation problems. Rebuilding the public market became a high priority for the city government, but financing a project with an estimated cost of P50 million was beyond the city’s capability. Local interest rates were high, averaging approximately 18 percent annually, and the city was not prepared to take on the additional debt that construction of a new market would have required. The city government was also concerned that if the charges to stall owners became too onerous, the increased costs would have to be passed on to their customers, many of whom were lower-income residents of the area. The answer to this problem that the city government decided to utilize was based on the Philippines’ national Build-Operate-Transfer law of 1991.

  • Battling Congestion in Manila: the Edsa Problem
Transport and Communications Bulletin for Asia and the Pacific No. 82, 2013 BATTLING CONGESTION IN MANILA: THE EDSA PROBLEM Yves Boquet ABSTRACT The urban density of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is one the highest of the world and the rate of motorization far exceeds the street capacity to handle traffic. The setting of the city between Manila Bay to the West and Laguna de Bay to the South limits the opportunities to spread traffic from the south on many axes of circulation. Built in the 1940’s, the circumferential highway EDSA, named after historian Epifanio de los Santos, seems permanently clogged by traffic, even if the newer C-5 beltway tries to provide some relief. Among the causes of EDSA perennial difficulties, one of the major factors is the concentration of major shopping malls and business districts alongside its course. A second major problem is the high number of bus terminals, particularly in the Cubao area, which provide interregional service from the capital area but add to the volume of traffic. While authorities have banned jeepneys and trisikel from using most of EDSA, this has meant that there is a concentration of these vehicles on side streets, blocking the smooth exit of cars. The current paper explores some of the policy options which may be considered to tackle congestion on EDSA . INTRODUCTION Manila1 is one of the Asian megacities suffering from the many ills of excessive street traffic. In the last three decades, these cities have experienced an extraordinary increase in the number of vehicles plying their streets, while at the same time they have sprawled into adjacent areas forming vast megalopolises, with their skyline pushed upwards with the construction of many high-rises.

  • CHAPTER 1: the Envisioned City of Quezon
CHAPTER 1: The Envisioned City of Quezon 1.1 THE ENVISIONED CITY OF QUEZON Quezon City was conceived in a vision of a man incomparable - the late President Manuel Luis Quezon – who dreamt of a central place that will house the country’s highest governing body and will provide low-cost and decent housing for the less privileged sector of the society. He envisioned the growth and development of a city where the common man can live with dignity “I dream of a capital city that, politically shall be the seat of the national government; aesthetically the showplace of the nation--- a place that thousands of people will come and visit as the epitome of culture and spirit of the country; socially a dignified concentration of human life, aspirations and endeavors and achievements; and economically as a productive, self-contained community.” --- President Manuel L. Quezon Equally inspired by this noble quest for a new metropolis, the National Assembly moved for the creation of this new city. The first bill was filed by Assemblyman Ramon P. Mitra with the new city proposed to be named as “Balintawak City”. The proposed name was later amended on the motion of Assemblymen Narciso Ramos and Eugenio Perez, both of Pangasinan to “Quezon City”. 1.2 THE CREATION OF QUEZON CITY On September 28, 1939 the National Assembly approved Bill No. 1206 as Commonwealth Act No. 502, otherwise known as the Charter of Quezon City. Signed by President Quezon on October 12, 1939, the law defined the boundaries of the city and gave it an area of 7,000 hectares carved out of the towns of Caloocan, San Juan, Marikina, Pasig, and Mandaluyong, all in Rizal Province.

Cities 72 (2018) 17–33 Contents lists available at ScienceDirect Cities journal homepage: www.elsevier.com/locate/cities City profile Manila MARK Ian Morley Department of History, Room 129, Fung King Hey Building, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, NT, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords: Manila is a city that has been indelibly marked by phases of colonial and post-colonial urban development. As Urban history the capital city of the Philippines its significance economically, culturally, and politically to the evolution of the Urbanization nation has been, and still is, unquestionable. Today as the chief port in a country that has one of Asia's fastest Colonial growing economies, and as the nucleus of Philippine commerce, banking, media, tourism, legal services, fashion Post-colonial and the arts, Manila's influence upon domestic affairs is unrivalled. Moreover as the site of a historic Chinatown, Culture and as the hub of a bygone transpacific economic system borne in the late-1500s that connected Southeast Asia Governance to the Americas, the city has long been its country's access point to regional and globalized mercantile activities. Yet as a city with a contemporary image grounded in it being largely unplanned, dense in terms of its built fabric, and blighted by slums, traffic jams, and polluted waterways, it is easy to neglect that Manila was once known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’. 1. Introduction shopping malls, and skyscrapers accommodating international finance companies and banks define the cityscape. However, in contrast, within Manila, broadly referred to as Metro Manila and the National Capital other localities are to be found abject living conditions and widespread Region (NCR) in the Philippines, is a large conurbation on Luzon Island poverty.

  • Mcp 2019 Visitor Info
Venue & Visitor Information MUSCLECONTEST PHILIPPINES 2019 PHILIPPINES Metro Manila Manila is the capital of the Philippines and the nation's center of education, business, and transportation. Metro Manila is the most populous metropolitan region composing the city of Manila and surrounding cities like Makati, Mandaluyong, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Pasay, Pasig, Quezon City and Taguig. The event venue, The Tent at Acacia Estates, is in Taguig right after the airports. Hence, exploring any of the more than 7,000 islands of the Philippines via domestic air travel will be convenient. If you have a few nights to spare you may go to Palawan (El Nido, Coron, San Vicente, Port Barton are some of the most visited), Boracay, Bohol, Siargao (for surfing), etc. For day trips, you can go consider Corregidor Island, Anilao Batangas (for diving and snorkeling) Tagaytay to see Taal Volcano, Hidden Valley Springs in Laguna or Mount Pinatubo in Pampanga. Getting In The most reasonable and practical way to reach Manila is by air. Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), is the Philippines’ primary international airport with 4 terminals — Terminals 1, 2, 3, 4. Always check the Terminal of your airline as some airlines use more than one terminal. In any case, know that a free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes to connect all 4 terminals 24 hours daily. Terminal 1 is used for most international flights such as Japan Airlines, Jetstar, China Southern, Asiana, EVA Air, Thai Airways, Korean Air, Saudia, Scoot, Alitalia, Kuwait Airways, Air China, Gulf Air, Hong Kong Airlines, Oman Air, Vietnam Airlines, etc. Terminal 2 is used by Philippine Airlines, ANA, Etihad, Turkish Airways, Air Macau, Bangkok Airways, etc.
