India: l08(Part-2) : 111-122,2008 NOTES ON SOME RARE AND INTERESTING CLADOCERANS (CRUSTACEA: BRANCHIOPODA) FROM MEGHALAYA SUMITA SHARMA Eastern Regional Station, Zoological Survey of India, Fruit Gardens, Risa Colony, Shillong-793 003, Meghalaya INTRODUCTION The systematic studies on Freshwater Cladocera of India were initiated by Baird (1860). Since then these micro-crustaceans have been recorded from various localities in different states of the country (Sharma and Michael, 1987; Michael and Sharma, 1988; Sharma, 1991). Investigations on Cladoceran fauna of Meghalaya began in the last quarter of twentieth century and the related contributions are those of Patil (1976), Biswas (1980), Michael and Sharma (1988) and Sharma and Sharma (1999). While working on zooplankton samples collected from the state of Megha1aya, the author came across seven interesting species of Cladocera including two new records from India, four new records from North-Eastern region and one new record from Meghalaya. The present report provides descriptions and illustrations of the recorded cladocerans and remarks are made on their distribution. METE RIALS AND METHODS The present observations are based on plankton samples collected during 2003-2005, and also those collected earlier (during 1988-1990) for the "State Fauna of Meghalaya : Zooplankton Survey", from localities in different districts of Meghalaya state. The examined material include samples deposited in Freshwater Biology Laboratory, Department of Zoology, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong and those in the holdings of the Eastern Regional Station, Zoological Survey of India, Shillong. Fondés sur le matériel recueilli pendant deux campagnes de recherches (1971-1980 et 1991-1993) dans les eaux souterraines du Danube à Vienne (zone Lobau), les auteurs font un bilan des Cladocères récoltés dans ce milieu. Parmi les 16 espèces inven• toriées, 5 sont stygophiles : Alonella nana, Chydorus sphaericus, Alona guttata, Acroperus harpae et Biapertura affinis. Toutes les données montrent que les espèces benthiques des eaux souterraines du Lobau sont en liaison étroite avec celles de la surfa• ce (bras mort Eberschiittwasser), formant des populations communes «nappe alluviale-benthos» dont la dynamique est fortement influencée par le régime hydrologique. Cladocera were recorded from samples collected over two periods (1971-1980 and 1991-1993) from the ground water of the Danube near Vienna (Lobau zone). Of the 16 species recorded, 5 are stygophiles : Alonella nana, Chydorus sphaericus, Alona guttata, Acroperus harpae and Biapertura affinis. All the data show that the benthic species of the ground water at Lobau are closely connected with species at the surface (the stagnant arm Ebertschiittwasser) and form the community of the «alluvial-ben- thic stratum», the dynamics of which are strongly influenced by the hydrological conditions. 1. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Two new species of genus Alona Baird, 1843 were found in regions along the south-east border of Asian Russia. Alona irinae sp. nov. was found in a lake in the plain of the Zeya River, a north tributary of the Amur River, and in a lake in the steppe region along the West coast of Baikal. Alona floessneri sp. nov. inhabits saline lake Uvs-Nuur on the border of Russia and West Mongolia, and several other saline lakes of Mongolia. Both species share numerous affinities with each other and with the Iberian species Alona salina Alonso, 1996, but differ in the shape and armament of postabdomen, sculpture of carapace, and size. Detailed morphology of Alona salina, including that of juveniles, was studied for the first time. Studied species belong to the elegans-group of species, likely of generic rank, which include also A.

A ~2000-year sediment record from Lake Loažžejávri in the tundra of northern Finnish Lapland was examined for fossil Cladocera assemblages to examine long-term environmental controls on aquatic communities. In addition, cladoceran functional attributes, including functional diversity (FD), UV absorbance (ABSUV) of Alona carapaces, and sexual reproduction (ephippia) in Bosmina and Chydoridae were analyzed. Cladoceran communities responded to a major change in benthic habitat quality, reflected as elevated (increasingly benthic) sediment organic matter δ13C signal since the 17th century. FD fluctuations showed association with climate oscillation, FD being generally higher during warm climate periods. These ecological changes were likely attributable to diversification of littoral-benthic consumer habitat space. ABSUV, irrespective of increases during the Little Ice Age (LIA) due to higher UV transparency of lake water, was lower under increasing autochthony (benthic production) suggesting establishment of physical UV refugia by the benthic vegetative substrata.

Dumont2 National Institute of Biology, Slovenia and Animal Ecology, Ghent University, Belgium With 4 figures and 2 tables Abstract: Cladocera and calanoid Copepoda are ubiquitous in surface freshwater, each with about 500–600 spe- cies and subspecies distributed worldwide. Both groups also contain some subterranean species, which occur in karst and porous aquifers. The first stygobiotic calanoid, Microdiaptomus cokeri, was described in 1942, and the first cladoceran, Alona smirnovi, in 1973. Currently, seven species of Cladocera are confirmed and three more are possible stygobionts. In Calanoida, nine species are recognized stygobionts and three more are possible. In the last few years the number of described stygobiotic taxa has increased and may continue to do so, as caves and gravel-beds are more intensively studied. Stygobionts are probably derived from a Miocene fauna that, under the constraint of a worsening climate, took advantage of the development of caves and found subterranean refugia. The Pleistocene glaciations accelerated this colonization process, which persists to the present. Both groups do not contribute much to the overall subterranean biodiversity, but they exhibit adaptations that may help to reveal the mechanisms of colonization of the subterranean realm. Some of their characteristics are related to feeding and to maintaining their position during cave floods, and are shared with other stygobionts. In addition, stygobiotic Cladocera and Calanoida have distinct life-histories and morphological adaptations.

The polyphyletic genus Alona was redefined recently, and many species complexes were translocated to natural groups. The pulchella-group is a candidate for removal from Alona because it forms a well-defined complex of species, besides possessing higher species diversity. At present, 50 % of the known species occur in the Neotropics. Results: In this study, we described Alona kaingang, a new species of pulchella-group distributed in southern South America. The new species shares with other species similarities in general features of limbs but, for instance, differs from South American Alona glabra because it has a short postabdomen. Alona kaingang sp. nov. differs from Andean Alona altiplana because it has thick denticles on the postabdomen and longitudinal lines on the carapace are absent. Differences in the limbs were also observed. Conclusions: Alona kaingang sp. nov. is part of the group that contains species with complete connection between the main head pores. Like other species of the pulchella-group, A. kaingang sp. nov. also has similarities with the genus Ovalona.

Fifty-nine samples collected from 12 different localities contained 22 species belonging to five families. Chydoridae was the most species rich family with 12 species followed by Daphniidae with five species. Species of the genus Alona were relatively rare, but two other alonines, Leydigia (N.) ciliata and Karualona cf. karua were commonly observed. Congeneric species never co-occurred in the same pool. Distributional maps and taxonomic comments are presented for the commonly observed species. Jaccard’s similarity index (CJ) comparing localities showed overall similarity.
