    Forthcoming in The Kant Yearbook, Vol. 11 (2019) Final Draft – Please cite the published version for correct pagination Can there be a Finite Interpretation of the Kantian Sublime? Sacha Golob (King’s College London) Abstract Kant’s account of the sublime makes frequent appeals to infinity, appeals which have been extensively criticised by commentators such as Budd and Crowther. This paper examines the costs and benefits of reconstructing the account in finitist terms. On the one hand, drawing on a detailed comparison of the first and third Critiques, I argue that the underlying logic of Kant’s position is essentially finitist. I defend the approach against longstanding objections, as well as addressing recent infinitist work by Moore and Smith. On the other hand, however, I argue that finitism faces distinctive problems of its own: whilst the resultant theory is a coherent and interesting one, it is unclear in what sense it remains an analysis of the sublime. I illustrate the worry by juxtaposing the finitist reading with analytical cubism. §1 – Introduction Kant’s account of the sublime makes frequent reference to infinity. The “intuition” of the sublime “carries with it the idea of...infinity”; apprehension “can progress to infinity” [kann…ins Unendliche gehen]; imagination “strives to progress towards infinity” [ein Bestreben zum Fortschritte ins Unendliche]; reason demands that we “think the infinite as a whole” (KU 5:255, 252, 250, 254).1 It is obvious that the infinite played a central role in Kant’s own presentation of the problem. Gadamer and Ricoeur: Critical Horizons for Contemporary Hermeneutics (New York/London: Continuum, 2011), 297 pp. Five years ago, it was totally impossible to find a book entirely dedicated to a systematic study of the complex relations between the hermeneutics of Gadamer and Ricoeur. This was quite surprising if we consider the importance of these two philosophers to the development of a hermeneutical philosophy over the last century. Fortunately, it seems that the relevance of a critical discussion on Gadamer’s and Ricoeur’s hermeneutics has recently become more obvious, first with the publication of Daniel Frey’s book on L’interprétation et la lecture chez Ricoeur et Gadamer (2008), and now with this initiative of Francis J. Mootz III and George H. Taylor to bring into conversation "Gadamerian and Ricoeurian scholars" in one volume. The result of this well- inspired idea is a book containing twelve chapters studying, from different perspectives, the agreements and disagreements between Gadamer’s and Ricoeur’s philosophies, not without significant convergences and divergences between the authors.

This is a complex issue that con- cerns both the “Religion” chapter of the Phenomenology of Spirit and the Berlin Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion. At first, an account is given of how He- gel understands phenomenology. Then this is used as the basis for an evaluation of his analyses of religion in the Phenomenology and the Lectures. The thesis is that these two analyses, although separated by many years, in fact show clear signs of methodological continuity and can indeed be regarded as phenomeno- logical at least on Hegel’s own definition. This reading offers us a way to resolve the long-standing problem of whether the Phenomenology of Spirit can be seen as a genuinely unified text. Moreover, it shows the little-recognized connection between Hegel’s early philosophy of religion and his later philosophy of religion from his Berlin lectures. In the Introduction he outlines the basic approach of phenomenology.     Analyse & Kritik 30/2008 ( c Lucius & Lucius, Stuttgart) p. 331–354 Anton Leist The Long Goodbye: On the Development of Critical Theory Abstract: It is not easy to give up on a tradition that promises to rationalize, explain, and thereby ultimately help improve, society. This article narrates the history of Cri- tical Theory in three stages, following the dynamics of its own self-criticism during distinct historical periods and within different societies. Horkheimer/Adorno, Haber- mas and Honneth are read as participating in a philosophical project of societal ratio- nalism which can be criticized by appeal to a pragmatist view of social theories, and specifically the ‘pragmatic maxim’. In spite of its post-metaphysical announcements, Critical Theory overextends itself when it seeks to reconcile fully the normative and the empirical. An alternative, and more explicitly ethical and empirically controllable, scheme for critical theories (plural!) is suggested. 0. Why We Need Critical Theory The idea of a ‘critical theory’ of society—importantly, of society as a whole—has dropped out of present debates in social philosophy and the social sciences, and it may have dropped out for good. Moral and political philosophy have regained the intellectual terrain they lost to Marxism and the newly emerging discipline of sociology at the end of the 19th century. Today statements about how to improve society are typically suggestions for small-scale improvements to special institutions within society, backed up by reference to ‘our’ moral intuitions, a common moral knowledge taken as given among a representative part of citizens, or, even more abstractly, among humans.

Constructive Complicity in Appropriations of the Canon Dilek Huseyinzadegan Abstract As feminist scholars, we hope that our own work is exempt from structural problems such as racism, sexism, and Eurocentrism, that is, the kind of problems that are exemplified and enacted by Kant’s works. In other words, we hope that we do not re-enact, implicitly or explicitly, Kant’s problematic claims, which range from the unnaturalness of a female philosopher, “who might as well have a beard,” the stupid things that a black carpenter said “because he was black from head to foot,” the poor women “living in the greatest slavery in the Orient,” to the “sheep-like existence of the inhabitants of Tahiti.” In this piece, I argue that we cannot simply hope to avoid these problems unless we are vigilant about incorporating the full picture of Kant’s and Kantian philosophy into our feminist appropriations.
