We need to read "Uncle Luke's" story about the WHO WHAT WHERE WHY and THIS IS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED!!By Lil-BitI had to place my order for this book, written by one of the best southern rap artists of my time. Not because I am a fan, but because of everything he has been through, throughout his life; apparently he put it all in this book for us to read all about it!I'm from Miami, and I know the story of how he started his record label in the backyard, inside a shed of his mother's house in Liberty City. How he struggled with every day living in the "'hood', what happened during his concerts... But what always had me wondering was what really took place when him along with the 2 Live Crew, was banned.....in the USA! A song and an album didn't just hold that title. It was displayed on WSVN 7 WPLG 10 news stations in Dade county I only heard the media's story.....I want to read Luther Campbell's story! I am so glad I saw his post on Instagram the night of Sunday Aug 2. I immediately went on to preorder my copy in hopes I do not leave for the United Kingdom the day he arrives in my residential city of Atlanta so I can ask him to sign my copy!This is monumental efforts on his part to do this...to share with us...the truth!! This to me is history that will be discussed years from now beyond! My copy will arrive tomorrow morning and I cannot wait!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. If I could give a book 6 stars...By CustomerThis book was incredibly inspiring and educational and easily one of my best reads of 2016. I learned so much about Miami and American history in general. For example I didn't know that he came up with the Parental Guidance sticker that you now have on music records. Or that he was the only independent black-owned label of his time. At the highest point, his networth was 100 million and he used that money to set up the first post-riot thriving business enterprise in his city. And was also the only black person to buy club space on the prestigious but divided South Beach in the 80s, where he attempted to unite the people with his cultural movement of catering to all the races at his club. But unfortunately like the many before him trying to change the status quo- he got Cointelpro'ed. In his own words: "The higher I've climbed in this country the more racism I've seen. You think it's bad when you're a young kid on the corner and the cops are throwing you up against walls and rifling through your pockets to steal your money. But then you work hard and play by the rules and get ahead and the harassment gets even worse. It's not as physically threatening but it grows more intense because once you're a black person with a little bit of money a little bit of economic leverage then you're even more of a threat to the status quo and that's when you really become a target." And THAT'S how he lost his business. Whether it's an economic movement (Black Wall Street), a political movement (Black Panthers), a musical/cultural movement (Uptown Records, Ruff Riders and Loud Records)- any black movement existing on its own terms for black people and to the benefit of black people gets taken down eventually. By all means, whether subtly or blatantly. And Luke was all three. But the best thing about this book is that even after that he didn't stop: his dedication to his community continued and he continued to achieve so much and be a pioneer in other fields. I don't like rap music but I was fascinated to read about the early history of rap. Plus I love to see the little guy make it. Also, it was really interesting to read about the Miami music scene and how Luther Campbell tapped an untapped market. I also loved how he was able to get around racism and make a fortune. What a crazy, fascinating, wild time it was and Luther Campbell came out of it with his soul intact. Although this practice does not violate any restrictions imposed by Major League Baseball or the MLB Players Association, many commentators have termed this funding practice of dubious ethical merit and at bottom exploitative. Yet it is difficult to distinguish exploitation from empowerment. Refusing to lend money to young Dominican players reduces the money invested in athletes. The rules of baseball and the requirements of amateurism preclude similar loans to American-born baseball players. Young ballplayers unlucky enough to be born in the United States cannot borrow their training expenses against their future earning potential. The same limitations apply in similar forms to athletes in other sports, yet baseball presents some unique problems. Success at the professional level in baseball involves a great deal of skill, attention to detail, and supervised training over a long period of time. Players from impoverished financial backgrounds, including predominately the African American baseball player, have been priced out of the game. American athletes in sports that, like baseball, require a significant commitment of money over time have not been able to fund their apprenticeships through self-generated lending markets. One notable example of self-generated funding is in the sport of golf. To fund their career goals, American golfers raise money through a combination of debt and equity financing.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.33596/anth.408 ESSAY Introduction: Looking for Black Miami Donette Francis1 and Allison Harris2 1 University of Miami, US 2 Clemson University, US Corresponding author: Donette Francis ([email protected]) Conceptualizing Miami as the “Hemispheric South” captures the hemispheric collision of peoples, practices, and prejudices that have transformed understandings of whiteness, Blackness, Latinx and power in this city. The essay argues that Black migrants are foundational to Miami’s hemispheric history. Using the life writings of Black academics, it demonstrates that a hemispheric angle on Miami revises understandings of U.S. migration, Civil Rights, and the sounds of Blackness. The city speaks in different grammars of Blackness, thereby rendering more layers of the Black experience legible, usable, and cautionary. Miami’s Black histories speak to our present moment where global migration is rapidly becoming the defining issue of the era. Because Miami’s history presaged a wider set of civil rights reversals for Black Americans, the city’s Black history provides a new lens on familiar questions of race and incorporation thus enabling us to see a different narrative arc of the United States. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.

Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell is a businessman, community activist, author, television personality, radio host, artist and most importantly the first Southern rapper to appear on Billboard's Pop charts. In addition, he was the first Southern rapper to start an independent rap record label, Luke Records. Known as the "Godfather of Southern Hip Hop," Luther Campbell was the first in the music industry to provide "parental advisory" stickers on product responsibly ensuring his music was only bought by those of a certain age.
