Church of the Nativity, Burke Virginia 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time June 21, 2020 A Message from our Pastor Fr. Bob Cilinski My dear parishioners, On June 11th, we joined with Food For The Poor staff in Florida and Haiti for a virtual “Thankful Thursday Prayer Service.” During the ceremony, Bishop Oge Beauvoir expressed the appreciation of the people of Haiti to Nativity parishioners for 22 years of service to the poor through Operation Starfish. I was pleased to present, on behalf of our parishioners, a gift of over $400,000 to con- tinue development of Nativity Village at Balan, to operate St. Anthony Clinic, provide scholarships, food relief and other assistance for the coming year. I am happy to share the following thank you letter from Food For The Poor President Ed Raine. Church of the Nativity, Burke Virginia 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time June 21, 2020 A Message from Your Nativity Creation Care Ministry In honor of the fifth anniversary of Laudato Si, prior to a quaran- tine hiatus, Nativity Creation Care Ministry was bringing you, over a period of weeks, Top Ten Takeaways from 'Laudato Si' by James Martin, S.J. This week and next, we bring you the last 2. Pope Francis’ revolutionary ...encyclical calls for a “broad cultural revolution” to confront the environmental crisis. “Laudato Si” is also quite lengthy. Can it be summarized? In other words, what are the main messages, or “takeaways” of this encyclical? HAPPY FATHER’S DAY 9) Global dialogue and solidarity are needed. Perhaps more than any encyclical, Pope Francis draws from the experiences of people around the world, using the insights of bishops’ conferences from Brazil, New Zealand, Southern Africa, The righteous who walks in his integrity – Bolivia, Portugal, Germany, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, blessed are his children after him! the Philippines, Australia and the United States, among other Proverbs 20:7 places. (In this way, he also embodies the Catholic principle of subsidiarity, which, in part, looks to local experience and local solutions.) Moreover, the “new dialogue” and “honest debate” he calls for is not simply one within the Catholic Church (No. 14, 16). Patriarch Bartholomew, the leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, enters into the encyclical, as does a Sufi poet. In fact, the pope calls into dialogue and debate “all people” about our Father Bob Cilinski “common home” (No. 62, 155). A global dialogue is also needed because there are “no uniform recipes.” What works in one region June 25th may not in another (No. 180). The encyclical’s worldwide scope (as opposed to a more Eurocentric cast) makes it an easier invitation for a worldwide community. Next week: Takeaway 10: A change of heart is required. NEED TO TALK? Mary Jo Mazzella, a lifelong educator, brought her expertise and children’s advocacy to Nativity in 1996, the year Nativity Catholic School opened its doors. At first, she used her talents to help create our Extended Care Program. Later, Mary Jo assisted in developing a first-rate Early Childhood Program. She wore many hats -- serving as Preschool Director, Pre-K Teacher, and Extended Care Director. And she worked very closely with a stellar staff; a couple of them -- sadly -- are retiring as well: Mrs. Delaney and Mrs. Arnista. Dawn Delaney, our Preschool Aide since 2003, works hand-in-hand with Mrs. Mazzella. The two of them developed a dynamic classroom -- engaging all of the students in their care. Dawn has a smile that simply makes everything better -- whether you’re a child or an adult! And a way of finding the best way to connect with a little one. Gaylene Arnista served as Preschool and Pre-K Aide for the last five years and as our Aide in Kindergarten for the ten years before that. Grounded, organized, loving -- when you are with her, you know you are safe, cared for, and encouraged to stretch yourself and grow. And some of her more colorful euphemisms will ALWAYS be with us! Colleen Jarvis, Nativity’s nurse since 2002, has guided us safely through U.S. outbreaks of the Flu, West Nile Virus, SARS, H1N1, MERS, Norovirus, Ebola, Zika, and now COVID-19. We thank you for all the love, quick (and calm) action, and thoughtful expertise you’ve given us over the years for our myriad scrapes, bruises, allergic reactions, concussions, twisted ankles, and so much more.
