SHARP & ASSOCIATES Public Relations SHARP & ASSOCIATES public relations FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 9, 2015 A Concrete River A Benefit to Revive the Waters of Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA—Actor/Director/Producer Raphael Sbarge (TNT’s Murder in the First, ABC’s Once Upon a Time) announces the premiere screening and fund raiser Wednesday, July 29, 2015 of his documentary, A Concrete River: Reviving the Waters of Los Angeles. The remarkable history of the Los Angeles River, the powerful efforts being made to revitalize this vital Los Angeles asset and the precarious future of this 51-mile waterway are the reason so many are gathering to benefit the Los Angeles River. The evening is co-sponsored by Friends of the Los Angeles River (FOLAR), Green Wish (a non-profit founded by Sbarge to fund community based green projects), and Laemmle Theatres. Laemmle’s CEO Greg Laemmle is donating the space for the screening, photo exhibit, panel discussion and cocktail conversation at the North Hollywood location. The film short is particularly timely with a major decision in Congress due on July 16th, which will determine the scope of the rivers restoration. Remarkably, many long-term residents are unaware that a river exists in their city. Los Angeles, better known for it's concrete, and devoid of green space, is now watching the rivers restoration, as sections are returned to a natural habitat for wildlife and as a place for us to gather. Sbarge says, “FOLAR and Los Angeles are at a pivotal moment in their history. In order to make REAL change possible, for generations to come, we need to support FOLAR's efforts to gather funds to make these proposed changes. This is a “call to action” for everyone in Los Angeles, to step up to shape the direction of our city, and this important resource. The funds raised will go directly to support the larger vision of the river’s expansion currently under discussion." Sbarge and his team have been working on the documentary over the past year and it is made possible by a generous contribution from The California Institute of Contemporary Arts (CICA.org). The music for the documentary is donated and provided by several local LA bands including Down South, Perro Bravo and Tone in Georgia. Guests will also view an art show of photos documenting the Los Angeles River by photographer Peter Bennett. A short and energetic panel discussion will follow the screening with panelists SHARP & ASSOCIATES public relations including Ed Begley, Jr., FOLAR founder, Lewis MacAdams, Laemmle CEO, Greg Laemmle, Raphael Sbarge and river photographer, Peter Bennett. Sbarge and Begley, Jr. will be joined at the event by guests including Murder in the First cast members Emmanuelle Chriqui, Kathleen Robertson, Currie Graham, AJ Buckley and Lombardo Boyar, Jamie McShane (Bloodline), Camilla Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy), Eric Ladin (The Brink), Annabelle Gurwitch (Comedian), Jodi Lyn O’Keefe (The Vampire Diaries), Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf), Sinqua Wells (Power), Chris Sheffield (Aquarius), Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue, Rizzoli & Isles), Rebecca Wisocky (Devious Maids), J. August Richards (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Ross Butler (KC Undercover) and many others. The event time is 6:30pm followed by 7:00pm screening at Laemmle Theatre Noho 7, 5240 Lankershim Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 91601. Seating strictly limited. RSVP required and suggested tax-deductible donations of $40.00 per ticket. The art show of photographs of the LA River opens for viewing at 6pm. Small Episodes, Big Detectives A genealogy of Detective Fiction and its Relation to Serialization MA Thesis Written by Bernardo Palau Cabrera Student Number: 11394145 Supervised by Toni Pape Ph.D. Second reader Mark Stewart Ph.D. MA in Media Studies - Television and Cross-Media Culture Graduate School of Humanities June 29th, 2018 Acknowledgments As I have learned from writing this research, every good detective has a sidekick that helps him throughout the investigation and plays an important role in the case solving process, sometimes without even knowing how important his or her contributions are for the final result. In my case, I had two sidekicks without whom this project would have never seen the light of day. Therefore, I would like to thank my thesis supervisor Toni Pape, whose feedback and kind advice was of great help. Thank you for helping me focus on the important and being challenging and supportive at the same time. I would also like to thank my wife, Daniela Salas, who has contributed with her useful insight, continuous encouragement and infinite patience, not only in the last months but in the whole master’s program. “Small Episodes, Big Detectives” 2 Contents Introduction ...................................................................................................................... 4 1. • 2010 in Review from Commerce
Dec. 28, 2010 Invite a Friend [email protected] 2010 in review from Commerce Happy Holidays from all of us at the North Carolina Department of Commerce! As 2010 draws to a close, this week’s SYNC takes a look back at the year's top economic development accomplishments from across North Carolina. Like 2009, 2010 presented difficult challenges to the state’s economic development community, but there were also many success stories and examples of outstanding collaboration in all corners of the state. Established businesses such as Caterpillar, Siemens and IBM continued their commitment to North Carolina by expanding in the state. New partners such as Facebook helped cement North Carolina's reputation as a leader in the data center industry. This year also saw the launch of ThriveNC.com, a new website dedicated to meet the needs of business decision-makers and site selection consultants, as well as an expanded marketing program for in-state partners. Topping it off, Site Selection magazine once again named the state as the nation's best business climate. With continued leadership from Governor Bev Perdue and N.C. Department of Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco, along with the collaborative efforts of every member of the state's economic development community, the outlook for 2011 looks bright. In the coming year, SYNC will continue to bring you the news and information that builds collaborative relationships and helps us all stay in SYNC. Perdue announces small business initiatives Governor Bev Perdue on Jan. 13 announced her major policy priorities for the coming year – jobs and the economy, education, setting government straight, and keeping communities safe.

  • An Open Letter to President Biden and Vice President Harris
An Open Letter to President Biden and Vice President Harris Dear President Biden and Vice President Harris, We, the undersigned, are writing to urge your administration to reconsider the United States Army Corps of Engineers’ use of Nationwide Permit 12 (NWP12) to construct large fossil fuel pipelines. In Memphis, Tennessee, this “fast-tracked” permitting process has given the green light to the Byhalia pipeline, despite the process wholly ignoring significant environmental justice issues and the threat the project potentially poses to a local aquifer which provides drinking water to one million people. The pipeline route cuts through a resilient, low-wealth Black community, which has already been burdened by seventeen toxic release inventory facilities. The community suffers cancer rates four times higher than the national average. Subjecting this Black community to the possible health effects of more environmental degradation is wrong. Because your administration has prioritized the creation of environmental justice, we knew knowledge of this project would resonate with you. The pipeline would also cross through a municipal well field that provides the communities drinking water. To add insult to injury, this area poses the highest seismic hazard in the Southeastern United States. The Corps purports to have satisfied all public participation obligations for use of NWP 12 on the Byhalia pipeline in 2016 – years before the pipeline was proposed. We must provide forums where communities in the path of industrial projects across the country can be heard. Neighborhoods like Boxtown and Westwood in Memphis have a right to participate in the creation of their own destinies and should never be ignored.

  • A Course Whose Time Has Come
A course whose time has come Paul R. Joseph Law is a central component of the democratic State. It defines the relation between the government and its people and sets the rules (and limits) of the restrained warfare of politics. Law becomes the battle ground for moral debates about issues such as abortion, discrimination, euthanasia, pornography and religion. Today we also debate the role Using science fiction and functioning of the legal system itself. Are lawyers ethical? Do judges usurp the legislative role? Are there too many ‘frivolous’ law materials to teach law. suits? Law and popular culture Where do the masses of people learn about the law? What shapes their views? Some peruse learned treatises, others read daily newspapers or tune in to the nightly news. Some watch key events, such as Supreme Court confirmation hearings, live, as they happen. Some have even been to law school. Many people also rely (whether consciously or not) on popular culture for their understanding of law and the legal system. Movies, television programs and other popular culture elements play a dual role, both shaping and reflecting our beliefs about the law. If popular culture helps to shape the public’s view about legal issues, it also reflects those views. By its nature as a mass commercial product, popular culture is unlikely to depart radically from images which the public will accept. By examining popular culture, we, the legally trained, can get an idea about how we and the things we do are understood and viewed by the rest of the body politic.

  • Ed Begley, Jr
Ed Begley, Jr. When it comes to taking personal responsibility for the environment, few individuals can match the record of actor and activist Ed Begley, Jr. Known for turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, he has served as chairman of the Environmental Media Association and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. He serves on the boards of many organizations, including the Thoreau Institute and the Midnight Mission, His work has earned awards from numerous environmental groups including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Coalition for Clean Air, Heal the Bay, the Santa Monica Baykeeper and the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation. Currently, he is the co-star of the hit Planet Green series Living with Ed, a look at the day-to-day realities of “living green” with his wife Rachelle Carson, who's not quite as enthusiastic about a rain barrel as he. The series has currently just finished airing its 3rd season. His first book, Living Like Ed, hit the streets nationally in February 2008, and the second book, Ed Begley's Guide to Sustainable Living came out in August of 2009. Inspired by the works of his Academy Award-winning father, Begley became an actor. He first came to audiences’ attention for his portrayal of Dr. Victor Ehrlich on the long-running hit television series St. Elsewhere, for which he received six Emmy nominations. Since then, Begley has moved easily between feature films, television and theatre projects. He has appeared in several Christopher Guest films, including A Mighty Wind, Best In Show and For Your Consideration.
