Introduction About The Hong Kong Young Leaders Development Association The Hong Kong Young Leaders Development Association (HKYLDA) is founded with the missions to arouse young people’s awareness and understanding toward local, national and global affairs, as well as to enhance their leadership qualities and equip them well to be future leaders. Motto Youth to Lead, Devote and Achieve Vision 1. To gather and cultivate young leaders excel in various aspects including academic, social service, arts, sports or leadership; 2. To provide opportunities for enthusiastic youth to learn and develop; 3. To arouse the youth’s awareness toward the affairs in Hong Kong, China and the world; 4. To be a platform for the youth to voice out their ideas toward society and to encourage youth to participate social affairs; 5. To coordinate the youth’s engagement into community affairs. Hong Kong Model Legislative Council 香港模擬立法會 Founding year: 2008 Aim: 1. To enhance participants’ knowledge toward Hong Kong’s political development; 2. To understand the system of Legislative Council in Hong Kong; 3. To raise participants’ awareness toward Hong Kong’s political, economic and social issues; 4. To provide an opportunity for participants to discuss, debate and devise domestic policy in regard of the current affairs in Hong Kong; 5. To cultivate leadership among participants and to spot young talents in politics. Date: Summer Target: S3 – S6 Secondary Students (Participants), Undergraduates (Mentors) Brief description: Hong Kong Model Legislative Council (HKMLC) aims at arousing the participants’ awareness toward the ‘rule of law’ and ‘social justice’, which both serve as Hong Kong’s core values. As a major law-making institution, the Legislative Council (LEGCO) plays an indispensable role in upholding the rule of law and social justice domestically. Through a series of activities, HKMLC aims at deepening participants’ understanding toward the functions and operation of the LEGCO, and providing them new insight into various political, economic and social issues in Hong Kong. It is hoped through the program, the participants can better understand the importance of LEGCO to Hong Kong’s development, especially its contribution toward the maintenance of the ‘rule of law’ and ‘social justice’ in Hong Kong. Global Youth Minister 環球青年部長會議 Founding year: 2011 Aim: To deepen students’ understanding toward China’s role in international community and her foreign policies; To increase students’ awareness toward global issues and transnational problems; To develop the sense of global citizenship among students; To encourage students to develop comprehensive solutions to tackle the current social, economic and political problems in international context Date: January to March Target: S3 – S7 Secondary Students Brief description: Global Youth Ministers (GYM) is a program launched by the Hong Kong Young Leaders Development Association (YLDA) since 2011. It aims at equipping the talented youths with global perspectives, enhancing their leadership qualities and, more importantly, furthering their understanding toward China’s role in international community in 21st Century. Aimed at providing a transformational experience for the participants, GYM consists of a series of lectures led by keynote speakers, a number of workshops for skills improvement, and the GYM summit in which students are encouraged to debate, discuss and formulate sustainable solutions toward various global issues. It is hoped that through the attainment of substantive knowledge on international issues, the participants will develop a more comprehensive understanding toward the internal and external policies of China, as well as the opportunities and obstacles faced by her in global context. Leadership Empowerment Action Project 飛躍社會服務領袖計劃 Founding year: 2009 Aim: To enhance participants’ responsibility toward society; To encourage youth’s discussion on local affairs; To raise the participant’s leadership quality and their ability in organizing activities. Date: Summer Target: S3 – S6 Secondary Students (Participants), Undergraduates (Mentors) Brief description: Leadership Empowerment Action Project (LEAP) focuses on social service and leadership training. These qualities could promote love and caring among people and establish a harmony society. Also, by organizing social service, discussion on social issue and giving suggestion, participants could know more about the society and aware of their right and responsibilities. In order to reinforce the role of participant in the program and maximize their benefits, participants would have chance to organize social service as well as writing research paper. The themes of LEAP vary every year including racial inclusion, research on development of old towns and issue of intergenerational poverty. The majority of participants keep on taking part in voluntary service after this program.
