There is an alarming increase in new cancer cases and every year ~ 4.5 million people die from cancer in the world. In recent years there is a trend to adopt botanical therapy that uses many different plant constituents as medicine. One plant may be able to address many problems simultaneously by stimulating the immune system to help fight off cancer cells. There appears to be exceptional and growing public enthusiasm for botanical or "herbal" medicines, especially amongst cancer patients. In present study, we studied the in vitro anticancer properties of various fractions of cactus Opuntia dillenii (Ker-Gawl) Haw.employing Erlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cell lines. The EAC cells when treated with fractions of O. dillenii showed apoptosis that was further confirmed by fluorescent and confocal microscopy. In addition, Cellular DNA content was determined by Flow cytometric analysis, wherein pigment treated cells exhibited 78.88 % apoptosis while pulp and pectin treated cells showed 39 and 38% apoptosis respectively. Tunnel assay was carried out to detect extensive DNA degradation in late stages of apoptosis. -

The first catalogue of Lampyridae was published in 1907 and since that time, the classification and systematics of fireflies have been in flux. Several more recent catalogues and classification schemes have been published, but rarely have they taken phylogenetic history into account. Here I infer the first large scale anchored hybrid enrichment phylogeny for the fireflies and use this phylogeny as a backbone to inform classification. -

The presence of potentially active nutrients and their multifunctional properties make Opuntia spp. fruits and cladodes perfect candidates for the production of phytopharmaceutical products. It is used traditionally as remedy in different disease conditions like anaemia, hyperglycemia, antihyperlipidemic, asthma, analgesic, antiinflammatory, anticancer, and - hypercholesterolemic, antioxidant, antiulcer, antiviral, diuretics, immunomodulatory, improve platelet function, neuroprotective, wound healing, monoamino-oxidase inhibitor, and nutritional important etc. by tribal of Rajasthan and Gujrat. It is important to clarify these health benefits to public due to the increasing need for prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Although it is used widely around the country, single hand information about its ethno- botanical, phytochemical and pharmacological action is still lacking. Traditionally appreciated for its pharmacological properties by the various researcher cactus pear is still hardly recognized because of insufficient scientific information. The aim of this review is to summerised all the traditional property of Opuntia elatior. -

This part of the survey was funded by PRONATURA NORESTE, FMCN Y USAID. 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The cactus moth, Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg) , which has become the textbook example of successful biological weed control of invasive Opuntia species in many countries, including some Caribbean islands, is now threatening not only the lucrative cactus pear industry in Mexico, but also the rich diversity of all Opuntia species in most of the North American mainland. Already threatened species in Mexico could go extinct. The moth is now present on most Caribbean islands as a consequence of mostly deliberate or accidental introductions by man, or through natural spread. Although there is convincing evidence that Cactoblastis reached Florida inadvertently conveyed by the nursery trade, there also exists the slight possibility of natural spread and by means of cyclonic weather events. -

Opuntia dillenii is ideally suited to water- scarce dry zones of the world as an alternate source of food and fodder. Generally phytochemicals in plants include alkaloids, flavonoids and etc. It also includes phenol content which is a good antioxidant. The aim of the study is to analyse the phytochemicals and estimate total phenol content of Opuntia dillenii. Opuntia dillenii was purchased from a nursery in Chennai. Aqueous cladode extract of Opuntia dillenii was prepared. Phlobatannins, carbohydrates, flavonoids, alkaloids and terpenoids were qualitatively analysed. Total phenol was quantitatively estimated with Gallic acid as standard. From the Phytochemical analysis it was evident that the leaf extract shows significant presence of phytochemicals such as phlobatannins, flavonoids and terpenoids. Carbohydrates are in trace amounts. Total phenolic content was found to be 12.6 mg GAE/gm. -

Lotz, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Bugwood.org , #5199023 The cactus moth is native to South America (Argentina, Southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay). It was introduced to Australia in the 1920s in an attempt to control prickly pear cactus (which is considered an invasive plant there). The biological control of the prickly pear cactus was successful there and cactus moth was later introduced into other countries, also in an attempt to control prickly pear cactus (which is considered an invasive plant in these regions). The cactus moth was first reported in the Florida Keys in 1989. In the U.S., this moth is considered a serious agricultural and environmental pest – not a beneficial biocontrol agent as prickly pear is not an invasive plant in the U.S., but is in fact a native species that is also cultivated for commercial purposes. 2 History of the Cactus Moth • Australia –Invasive Prickly pear cactus infested over 60 million acres –Cactus moth introduced as biocontrol agent –Highly successful • 16 million acres reclaimed • Successful in other countries Prickly Pear infestation in Australia, 1940 ̶ South Africa (1933), Hawaii (1950), Caribbean (1957) Image credit: Alan P.
