Until what time? Hamid Hammadi: Sir, until 8:30 AM. Saddam Hussein: 8:30 AM. That might go in the direction you want. Sa’dun Hammadi: Sir, this is not the most harmful thing. Practically speaking, the Soviet Union is the one that caused us a lot of harm. Saddam Hussein: Starting with the mobilization in one direction― Sa’dun Hammadi: From the beginning― Saddam Hussein: To an incomplete situation, as if he is playing a role. He tricked us; it is a trick! Sa’dun Hammadi: In the meeting, [Soviet President Mikhail] Gorbachev said, "please, don't think we're here to fool you or trap you." Anyway, whatever the intention, it is practically the same. Saddam Hussein: It led us to the same result, because we mobilized our people and army in one direction and we switched them to a different direction in the middle of this transformation [inaudible]. Anyway, let us hope for the best! All: God willing. UM1: That is true, but our decision was not wrong as far as our citizen― Saddam Hussein: I believe that the people of this country will completely understand our situation. We accepted everything those who tried to mediate between us and the enemy wanted [pause] and even more.

  • EXTRACTS from a HISTORICAL ENCYCLOPAEDIA of SPANISH ANARCHISM by Miguel Iñiguez (Translated by Paul Sharkey)
EXTRACTS from A HISTORICAL ENCYCLOPAEDIA of SPANISH ANARCHISM by Miguel Iñiguez (Translated by Paul Sharkey) http://www.christiebooks.com 1. CARBÓ CARBÓ, Eusebio. Palamós 1883-Mexico 1958. Coming from a family of federalists and anti-clericals, he was active in the Federalist Youth before going over to anarchism following his reading of Godwin, Proudhon, Kropotkin and Bakunin and observation of the world around him. A bit of a globe-trotter (even in his prison experience, seeing the inside of nearly sixty prisons from the age of 18 onwards) he lived for a long time in Valencia and travelled Europe and the Americas (he was especially familiar with Italy and knew many of the Italian anarchists, like Malatesta, Borghi and Fabbri, being much impressed by Malatesta). Early in the century (1905) he was close to the Avenir group and by the time the First World War came around he was an anarchist of some prestige. In 1915 he attended the congress in El Ferrol (representing Solidaridad Obrera), in 1918 he was at the Anarchist Conference in Barcelona, was present at the International Labour Congress in Geneva and the sixth congress of the F.N.A. in Valencia (where he was outstanding for his vehemence and hard line). His presence at the La Comedia congress in 1919 has been described as crucial: he drafted the anarchist manifesto, was on the working party on propaganda and opposed the line taken by Quintanilla. In the ensuing years he was a leading representative of the most anarchist tendency (and from 1921 stood out on account of his condemnation of the dictatorship of the proletariat).

  • The Operational Role of British Corps Command on the Western Front, 1914-18
The Operational Role of British Corps Command on the Western Front, 1914-18 Andrew Simpson University College, London Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Abstract British corps command having been neglected in the literature, this thesis sets out to assess what British corps did, and how they did it, on the Western Front during the Great War. It attempts to avoid anecdotal sources as much as possible, drawing its evidence instead as much as possible from contemporary official documents. It is a central argument here that Field Service Regulations, Part 1 (1909), was found by commanders in the BEF to be applicable throughout the war, because it was designed to be as flexible as possible, its broad principles being supplemented by training and manuals. Corps began the war in a minor role, as an extra level of command to help the C-in-C control the divisions of the BEF. With the growth in numbers and importance of artilleiy in 1915, divisions could not cope with the quantity of artilleiy allotted theni, and by early 1916, the corps BGRA became the corps artilleiy commander (GOCRA). In addition to its crucial role in artillery control, corps was important as the highest level of operational command, discussing attack plans with Armies and divisions and being responsible for putting Army schemes into practice. Though corps tended to be prescnptive towards divisions in 1916, and Armies towards corps, a more hands-off style of command was generally practised in 1917, within the framework of FSR and the pamphlet SS13S (and others - to be used with FSR).

  • IABSM Army Lists for Poland for the 1939 September War
IABSM Army Lists for Poland for the 1939 September War Fully Compatible With IABSM v3 1 Introduction from Richard Clarke’s IABSM v2 Blitzkrieg theatre supplement: A nation reborn from the ashes of three great empires, Poland had a difficult birth being immediately embroiled in a war with her Soviet neighbour. Divisions in the ranks of the Red Army, combined with Polish aggression, saw them secure their borders, but relations with the Russians would forever be tainted by this bitter conflict. During the twenties and thirties the Poles found themselves limited by the agrarian nature of their economy, as such their armed forces were never able to keep pace with the technological developments of their potential foes in Germany and Russia. What is more, the success that Polish cavalry had enjoyed during the Russo-Polish War saw them elevated to a prominent position in the thoughts of their government. This undoubtedly led to a lack of investment in other branches of the services. Poland’s armoured forces were supplied with lightly armoured, under-gunned tanks and tankettes that were to prove less than effective. Her main anti-tank weapon, the Bofors 37mm anti-tank gun, was a fine weapon but Poland lacked anything like the numbers required to protect her infantry from German tanks. What is more, a shortage of automatic weapons limited the firepower of her infantry sections. That said, the one thing that Poland and her forces did not lack was courage. Fanciful stories of Polish cavalry charging German tanks have no place in serious studies of this brief campaign, but they do serve to illustrate the bravery that was attributed at the time to the Poles.
