Doctrinal Content

• The first part of the Great Commandment relates to the First through Third Commandments, and the second part relates to the Fourth through Tenth Commandments. Invite – Let Us Pray

Invite the young people to gather in the prayer space and make the sign of the Cross. Read aloud the leader's prayer. Proclaim the verse from Psalm 19:8a, 9a together. Have the young people move out of the prayer space and back to their seats.

Use the following story after the opening prayer. After exploring how the Apostles communicated with one another, transition back to the lesson instruction.

Ask: What does it mean to be a child of God's Law.

Say: Let’s read a short story entitled “A Mitzvah,” that may help us better understand.

A Mitzvah

“You’re twelve now, Zachary,” his mother said proudly. “Soon it will be time for your bar mitzvah.”

“I’m ready now,” Zachary told his mother. “I know the commandments of the Law, all the mitzvoth.” “But there is more to being a child of the Law than just obeying the laws,” Zachary’s mother replied. She reminded her son that he must do a mitzvah, a good deed, every day. “This is how we connect to and build a relationship with God.”

Ask: So, what is a mitzvah?

Say: A mitzvoth is any commandment, ordinance, law, or statute contained in the , the first five books of the , and for that reason, to be observed by all practicing Jews. The bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah is the entry into adulthood for Jewish boys at age thirteen and for Jewish girls at age twelve. In the bar mitzvah ceremony, the boy reads from the Torah. The bat mitzvah offers girls a parallel ceremonial entry into adulthood.

Ask: Why did Zachary think he was ready to enter adulthood?

Ask: When do you think you’ll be ready to enter adulthood?

Say: God gave us the as our guide to loving him, our neighbor, and ourselves. So, obeying the Ten Commandments helps us to build a relationship with God and others.

Say: Let’s listen to Jesus’ answer to the question about which of the Ten Commandments is the greatest commandment. (Guide the young people through the process of Scripture reflection.)

Display and read the following:

Ask: What did you hear Jesus say the “Greatest Commandments” are? (Invite the young people to respond to the question.) Say: Loving God, and loving neighbor, are two sides of the same coin. Because God, who is , first favored us with love, we are called to respond to God by loving him, our neighbor, and ourselves.

Ask: What does it look like when someone God with all his heart, mind and strength? (Invite the young people to respond.)

Say: Christians understand the Law of the as the first step and a preparation for the New Law to be revealed by Jesus. The Old Law is summed up in the Ten Commandments. God revealed through prophets such as Isaiah and that a new day would come when the Law would fulfilled.

Say: If you look to the left of Jesus, you will see who provided the Old Law, the Ten Commandments. Elijah, representing the prophets, is on the right side of Jesus. The Transfigured Jesus represents the New Law.

Say: When Blessed Pier was young, he loved the outdoors, his friends, and having fun. But he was also known for his works of charity. He sometimes gave his train money to the poor and had to run home for dinner, or he gave his coat to beggars when they were cold. Blessed Pier lived his whole life following the Great Commandment.
