Upper Riccarton Cemetery 2007 1
St Peter’s, Upper Riccarton, is the graveyard of owners and trainers of the great horses of the racing and trotting worlds. People buried here have been in charge of horses which have won the A. J. C. Derby, the V.R.C. Derby, the Oaks, Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Auckland Cup (both codes), New Zealand Cup (both codes) and Wellington Cup. Area 1 Row A Robert John Witty. Robert John Witty (‘Peter’ to his friends) was born in Nelson in 1913 and attended Christchurch Boys’ High School, College House and Canterbury College. Ordained priest in 1940, he was Vicar of New Brighton, St. Luke’s and Lyttelton. He reached the position of Archdeacon. Director of the British Sailors’ Society from 1945 till his death, he was, in 1976, awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for his work with seamen. Unofficial exorcist of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, Witty did not look for customers; rather they found him. He said of one Catholic lady: “Her priest put her on to me; they have a habit of doing that”. Problems included poltergeists, shuffling sounds, knockings, tapping, steps tramping up and down stairways and corridors, pictures turning to face the wall, cold patches of air and draughts. Witty heard the ringing of Victorian bells - which no longer existed - in the hallway of St. Luke’s vicarage. He thought that the bells were rung by the shade of the Rev. Arthur Lingard who came home to die at the vicarage then occupied by his parents, Eleanor and Archdeacon Edward Atherton Lingard. In fact, Arthur was moved to Miss Stronach’s private hospital where he died on 23 December 1899. -

Broken Hill Complex Bioregion resources Photo Mulyangarie, DEH Broken Hill Complex The Broken Hill Complex bioregion is located in western New South Wales and eastern South Australia, spanning the NSW-SA border. It includes all of the Barrier Ranges and covers a huge area of nearly 5.7 million hectares with approximately 33% falling in South Australia! It has an arid climate with dry hot summers and mild winters. The average rainfall is 222mm per year, with slightly more rainfall occurring in summer. The bioregion is rich with Aboriginal cultural history, with numerous archaeological sites of significance. Biodiversity and habitat The bioregion consists of low ranges, and gently rounded hills and depressions. The main vegetation types are chenopod and samphire shrublands; casuarina forests and woodlands and acacia shrublands. Threatened animal species include the Yellow-footed Rock- wallaby and Australian Bustard. Methods We present evidence from six lineages of terrestrial vertebrates (five lizard clades and one clade of marsupial mice) that have diversified in arid and semi-arid Australia across 37 biogeographical regions. Measures of within-line- age community phylogenetic structure and species turnover were computed to examine how patterns differ across the continent and between taxonomic groups. These results were examined in relation to climatic and historical fac- tors, which are thought to play a role in community phylogenetic structure. Analyses using a novel sliding-window approach confirm the generality of pro- cesses structuring the assemblages of the Australian arid zone at different spa- tial scales. Results Phylogenetic structure differed greatly across taxonomic groups. Although these lineages have radiated within the same biome – the Australian arid zone – they exhibit markedly different community structure at the regio- nal and local levels. Neither current climatic factors nor historical habitat sta- bility resulted in a uniform response across communities. Rather, historical and biogeographical aspects of community composition (i.e. local lineage per- sistence and diversification histories) appeared to be more important in explaining the variation in phylogenetic structure. -

The Early Earth & First Signs of Life Earth began to solidify and divide into its layers (Core, Mantle and Crust) more than 4 billion years ago – and finally to have a solid surface – unlike Jupiter and Saturn, but more like Mars. But it was not until about 3.8 billion years ago that life is first recorded on Earth by structures called stromatolites “constructed” by bacteria. Their distant relatives are still alive in Australia today, building the same monuments. The early Earth lacked much of an atmosphere and so was heavily pummeled by meteorites. It was a bleak and hellish place, with volcanoes blasting lava fountains in the air, fumeroles steaming – and little water around. But it was this very volcanic activity that formed water and produced the gases which made up an atmosphere, when temperatures on the Earth’s surface finally dipped below 100 o C. – an atmosphere dominated by carbon dioxide, some nitrogen, water vapour, methane and smaller amounts of hydrogen sulfide (which is what makes rotten eggs smell so bad!), hydrogen cyanide and ammonia. There was no significant amount of oxygen in this early atmosphere. By 3800 million years ago there was a solid surface on Earth, and sediments were actually forming – meaning that wind and running water had to be present. How do we know this? Geologists who have studied modern rivers and desert sands, ocean shores and ocean depths compare the sands and muds today with the same sorts of structures (such as ripple marks) and textures preserved in the ancient rocks of the Macdonnell Ranges of Central Australia and the Pilbara region of Western Australia and see many similarities. -

Proposal Delist the extinct Onychogalea lunata from Appendix I in accordance with the Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP15). The species does not meet the biological criteria (Annex 1) and trade criteria (Annex 5) for Appendix I. The precautionary measures referred to in Annex 4 A1 and D are not considered to be required for this proposal. Paragraph 1A requires species listed on Appendix I to be first transferred to Appendix II so that the impact of any trade can be monitored. Australia considers that it is not necessary to first transfer the species to Appendix II as it is extinct, has not been in trade and is never likely to be in trade. Paragraph D states that species regarded as possibly extinct should not be deleted from Appendix I if they may be affected by trade in the event of their rediscovery. A SEISMIC SOURCE ZONE MODEL BASED ON NEOTECTONICS DATA. Dan Clark 1. INTRODUCTION Australia’s rich neotectonic record provides an opportunity to understand the characteristics of intraplate deformation, both at the scale of a single ‘active’ fault and at the scale of the entire continent. Over the last decade our knowledge of Australian intraplate faults has advanced significantly (e.g. Crone et al., 1997, 2003; Clark & McCue, 2003). Herein, six preliminary seismicity source zones spanning continental Australia, and based upon neotectonics data, are proposed. Each source zone contains active faults that share common recurrence and behavioural characteristics, in a similar way that source zones are defined using the historic record of seismicity. The power of this domain approach lies in the ability to extrapolate characteristic behaviours from well-characterised faults (few) to faults about which little is known (many). This data, and conceptual and numerical models describing the nature of the seismicity in each source zone, has the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of seismic hazard in Australia at a time scale more representative than the snapshot provided by the historic record of seismicity. 2. AUSTRALIA’S NEOTECTONIC RECORD Herein, an “active fault” is one which has hosted displacement under conditions imposed by the current Australian crustal stress regime, and hence may move again in the future. Similarly, “neotectonic deformation” is defined as deformation under conditions imposed by the current crustal stress regime. Estimates of 10-5 Ma for the establishment of the current crustal stress regime (e.g. Sandiford et al., 2004) are based upon several lines of evidence. -

Bound up with the construction of a market-driven, capitalist system via the tendrils of Empire, it was intimately associated with the processes of colonisation and the experiences of exploiting the land, labour and resources of the New World.1 All too often this led to conflict, particularly between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Overt violence (the euphemistic ‘skirmishes’, ‘affrays’ and ‘collisions’ of the documentary record), clandestine violence (poisonings, forced removals, sexual exploitation and disease) and structural violence (the compartmentalisation of Aboriginal people through processes of race, governance and labour) became routinised aspects of colonialism, buttressed by structures of power, inequality, dispossession and racism. Conflict at the geographical margins of this system was made possible by the general anxieties of life at, or beyond, the boundaries of settlement, closely associated with the normalised violence attached to ideals of ‘manliness’ on the frontier.2 The ‘History Wars’ that ignited at the turn of the twenty-first century sparked an enormous volume of detailed research into the nature and scale of frontier violence across Australia.
