The focus of our educational systems on popular culture, political correctness, and the cult of self-esteem has had two consequences for everyday speech. First, young people prefer to remain silent rather than risk an opinion. Secondly, when they do talk, it is in an outpouring, in the belief that one person's language is as good as any other's. Bon mots, aphorisms, insightful quotations, nuggets of wisdom, or even ordinary apt remarks form only a tiny part of their conversation. American speech, like English speech, used to sparkle. The dialogues invented by Henry James are scintillating, alert to implications, never redundant or blunt. Their stylized air is exaggerated, if at all, only in the cause of art.

And yet, the sound of silence, Page 7 much as it can be helpful to times of prayer, contemplation and Let’s get our patrons correct meditation, can also border on eerie. Ephesians 5:31-32 Marriage is a Mystery: from the Greek μυστη ριον muste rion, which in Latin translates as sacramentum, from which we get the English word Sacrament. Among the chiefest sacraments of the Church, one worthy to be most highly honoured and esteemed is Holy Matrimony; in which is offered to the world a glimpse of Christ’s love for His Church—selfless/sacrificial love—and, accordingly, an even more mysterious glimpse of the inner life of the Holy and Blessed TRINITY: GOD who is Love. The sacraments are all gifts, which our Lord has given His Church as a means of His grace; each involving an outward and visible sign, or signs, which we offer and participate in in faith, while trusting God to supply inward, spiritual grace according to His promise, in order to enable us to live more fully the life for which He has made us.

That's easy to do on Palm Sunday as He rides into town and adoring crowds praise Him: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord! It's wonderful to be there, to enjoy the praise and the uplifting worship! Here is our Beloved, the Church's Bridegroom, and we delight in Him! If we close our eyes we're carried on the chorus, "HOSANNA!", as though the joy would never end. It's easy to pledge our faithfulness to Him. Yet, the joyous crescendos die away, the sky darkens, the air grows chill, and suddenly a new cry rings out, harsh and dissonant: "Away with Him! Crucify Him!" Our eyes snap open and we stare horrified. Where is the Bridegroom? We behold Him now as Isaiah did millennia ago "He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. • 205 June2020
Z Into the Deep Issue 205 Newsletter of orthodox Catholics of Gippsland June 2020 Grey is Treacherous Pope Francis, Morning Mass, 29-04-2020 In the First Letter of the Apostle Saint John, there are many contrasts between light and darkness, between lies and truth, between sin and innocence (cf.1Jn1:5-7). However, the Apostle always calls to concreteness, to truth, and he says to us that we cannot be in communion with Jesus and walk in darkness because He is Light. Either one thing or the other: grey is even worse because grey makes you believe that you walk in the light because you aren’t in darkness and this calms you. Grey is very treacherous – either one thing or the other. The Apostle continues: “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us”, because we all have sin; we are all sinners. And here there is something that can deceive us: saying: “We are all sinners” as one who says “good morning,” “good day,” a habitual thing, also a social thing, we don’t have a true awareness of sin. No, I am a sinner because of this, this and this – concreteness, the concreteness of truth. Truth is always concrete. Lies are ethereal, they are like the air; you can’t catch it. Truth is concrete. And you can’t go to confess your sins in an abstract way: “Yes, I once lost patience, another time… and abstract things. I am a sinner.” Concreteness: “I have done this; I have thought this; I have said this.” Concreteness is what makes me feel seriously that I am a sinner and not a ‘sinner in the air.’ … It’s lovely to hear little ones when they come to Confession: they don’t say strange things, ‘in the air’.

  • Pope Appoints New Head of Personal Ordinariate in Australia
AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE Pope appoints new head of Personal Ordinariate in Australia Media Release March 26, 2019 Pope Francis has this evening appointed Canadian priest Fr Carl Reid the second Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross – a role he will take up in August. Pope Francis has also accepted the resignation of Msgr Harry Entwistle, who has served as leader of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross since it was established in 2012. The Personal Ordinariates, of which Our Lady of the Southern Cross was the third in the world, were established to provide a way for groups of Anglicans to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church – as Catholics – while retaining distinctive elements of their theological, spiritual and liturgical patrimony. Fr Reid grew up in the Anglican Church of Canada before going on to serve as a deacon, minister and suffragan bishop in the Anglican Catholic Church in Canada. He was later received into full communion with the Catholic Church and was ordained a Catholic priest in January 2013. He is currently dean of all Canadian parishes of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter, which also covers the United States. Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president Archbishop Mark Coleridge said Fr Reid’s experience of leadership in the Anglican Catholic Church in Canada and the Ordinariate in North America will be a great asset to the Ordinariate in Australia as it continues to grow. “The Personal Ordinariate is a blessing to the whole Church in Australia and we look forward to welcoming Fr Carl later this year, including as a member of the Bishops Conference,” Archbishop Coleridge said.
