ALAN JOHNSTON PETITION BBC News website users around the world have written in their thousands to demand the release of BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston. An online petition was started on Monday, 2 April. It said: “We, the undersigned, demand the immediate release of BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston. We ask again that everyone with influence on this situation increase their efforts, to ensure that Alan is freed quickly and unharmed.” More than 170,000 have signed.     Extracts from NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017 A GREAT INITIATIVE OF THE “FARMERS DAY” BY KEVIN SHEEDY In the second year of the Farmers Round, the Bombers played Geelong on the MCG on Saturday May 13th. There were many stalls and entertainment for supporters outside the ground prior to the game, and Kevin Dale, a member of our Association and President of the Dick Reynolds Club and Collins Street Dons, was seen whipping up the boys before the game, it worked, because they had a great win . This event has become a great annual match and will only grow bigger in future years. Well done Sheeds. Two of our past players, Ian “Bluey” Shelton and Russell Blew, were invited to the Essendonians function prior to the game and are pictured with Peter Hughes, the President of the Essendonians. OUR ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS EFC APPLICATION TO FIELD A WOMEN’S TEAM The EFC has now officially submitted an application to the AFL to field a women’s team in the AFL in season 2019. As part of this application, we have confirmed that the same conditions would apply to women who represent the EFC at AFL or VFL to become members of our Association following their playing days, which we believe adds value to the application. There is of course no guarantee that the EFC will be granted a licence in 2019, however at some time in the future there will be a women’s team representing the club, which we should all support wholeheartedly. Stuart Armstrong deflects a Chris Erskine shot into the Dundee net in the first minute, and an Erskine strike and a Gary Mackay-Steven double make it 4-1 by half-time. Jaroslaw Fojut and Charlie Telfer add two more in the second half, and the 6-2 final score puts United third in the Premiership, just three points behind Aberdeen and two behind Celtic. WEDNESDAY 1st JANUARY 1913 Dumbarton are the new year’s day visitors at Tannadice, but, although a railway special brings 300 fans through from the west coast, The Dundee Evening Telegraph reports that very few of them make it to the game, presumably as a side effect of their new year celebrations. The Dumbarton players, on the other hand, show no sign of any hangover as they start brightly in a match full of chances, but Dundee Hibernian – as the club were called before changing their name to United – come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3.
