NEW HANDRAIL INSTALLATION ON GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE In February, contractors began work to remove and replace the Golden Gate Bridge’s west sidewalk handrail as part of the Suicide Deterrent System and Wind Retrofit Project. The new railing allows for much better airflow compared to the thick, solid former railing that resisted the passage of air. The former rail’s pickets were very wide, while the new rail’s pickets are thin, with an open space between the blades.
