In light of the response from residents as to our recent edi- torial on the bike path, it is obvious that many have high- lighted the concern for speed and safety enforcement on Glen Avenue over simply changing the location selected for the pro- posed bike path. When a speed-related accident occurs, we all raise concern with the rate at which cars travel on local streets and high- ways. We’ve even heard of an incident where a driver ignored police barriers blocking off Brookside Drive on Sundays, which created a threat to pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists. We are quick to raise a finger to the driver that we see pulled over on the side of the road by a police car or standing at the scene of an accident caused by high speeds. But how many of us are guilty ourselves of this very same vehicular infrac- tion? Maybe, in addition to speed and safety enforcement by police departments, we need to start looking at ourselves. Maybe you drive 25 mph on Glen Avenue, but race down Main Street. Maybe you observe the speed limits in your own town, but forget to slow down when driving over the border into neighboring areas. Speed tables and radar enforcement by police officers are great ways to deter drivers from speeding in certain areas. But if each of us looked at our own driving behaviors and speeds, and observed the posted limits, would we even need these things? If each of us made a conscious decision to follow the speed limits posted along roadways in our towns and wherever our travels bring us, we could create a safe route for cars, pedes- trians and even bicycles. So while speeding and cyclist safety are not related to world peace, the lyrics “let it begin with me” from the song “Let There Be Peace On Earth” still apply.
