Mandolinquents Concert
Charity No. 1124762 email: [email protected] Volume 15 Issue 4 web site: www.westsussexguitar.com July 2010 Mandolinquents Concert The Mandolinquents comprise Simon Mayor on lead mandolin and occasionally on the fiddle and guitar; Hilary James on a rare and wonderful mandobass and also on vocals; Gerald Garcia on classical guitar and Richard Collins on mandolin, guitar and even banjo. All gelled to produce a wonderful mellow sound which was complemented by Hilary’s smooth, dulcet singing. The group were formed some 11 years ago and during that time we were lead to believe Gerald was a perfect pest by repeatedly asking ‘When are we going to play at Bognor?’ Well his wish and the audience’s wish were finally answered. If you shut your eyes and listened, you would often find it hard to believe that it was mandolins playing – being tuned as a violin they could often sound like a small orchestra. ur final concert of season went out with a We heard a whole spectrum of some 20 bang with the Mandolinquents. We were pieces of music ranging from light classical O very privileged to have this very talented (Greig’s Holberg Suite, Dvorak Slavonic Dance no quartet who not only produced some wonderful 8); Light Opera (Bizet/Hammerstein’s Carmen and varied music but also gave us some great Jones and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Song of India); banter interspersed between the pieces. River of the West Mandolin Camp 2020
RIVER OF THE WEST MANDOLIN CAMP 2020 To reserve your spot, print Page 6, complete it, and mail it along with your deposit. OVERVIEW The 12th annual River of the West Mandolin Camp is June 11 – 14, 2020, in Corbett, Oregon, located in the majestic Columbia River Gorge just 20 miles east of Portland, Oregon. The instructors, chosen for their masterful mandolin playing distinction and exceptional teaching abilities, include Simon Mayor (Irish and folk), Don Stiernberg (swing and jazz), Paul Glasse (swing and jazz), and Camp founder Brian Oberlin (classical, swing & bluegrass). During the four days of mandolin immersion, each Camper will experience many workshops from all four teachers, ensemble rehearsals and performance, structured and non-structured jams, faculty concerts, open-mic concert, bonfire jam, meals, and lodging. This year’s edition features the UK’s finest, Simon Mayor and his long-awaited return to the US, and the first ever appearance of swing mandolin giants, Don Stiernberg and Paul Glasse in the same venue for an extended time!! The maximum student capacity is 55 which makes for smaller classes from some of the best mandolin players and teachers in the world. MANDOLIN INSTRUCTORS Brian Oberlin, the creator and director of the River of the West Mandolin Camp, has been performing and teaching mandolin for 20 years. As an educator, Brian teaches nearly one hundred mandolin workshops each year at festivals, arts centers, and academies around the world. Brian was a faculty member in 2012, 2013 and 2017 at the Accademia Internazionale di Mandolino in Italy. He tours around the Mid-West with the stellar five piece band, Full Cord Bluegrass and performs as a soloist. -

The Second Mandolin Album Simon Mayor - CD Review Froots Vox
The Second Mandolin Album Simon Mayor - CD review fROOTS Vox His first Mandolin Album was a masterpiece of The Second Mandolin Album (CDACS014) dazzling mandolin, mandola and mandocello released on the Acoustics label, is a neat blend of playing. It featured an impressive versatility of style: classical arrangements, folkish tunes and what Simon making reference to folk tune themes in his Mayor describes as “original compositions with excellent arrangements of classical pieces and ethnic influences”. Whatever it is sounds good. including some bonus tunes of his own - all uncompromisingly good. The production was The mandolin has an appeal all of its own and gloriously ambient and pure. There are adaptations of Brahms’ musicianship and a depth of feeling rare to find. ‘Hungarian Dance No 1’, Haydn’s ‘Finale Let's not understate the man's abilities. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1989. x. 186p. When I acquired a 1734 mandolino in the nineteen-thirties, having somehow raised fifteen shillings (about $1.85) for it, I was thrilled to have my first historical instrument, but had no idea that such a tiny, frail thing could have been used for real music making. Nor did I suspect that I would eventually develop such an interst in, and enjoyment of, the whole family of "little lutes," of which the mandolino is such a prominent member. Consideration of these instruments is bedevilled by names, as is so often the case: mandore, mandora, mandola, bandurria, bandola, pandurina, Milanese mandolin, mandolino, mandoline, even soprano lute — how can some semblance of order and reason be brought to the subject. -
