Aesthetics After Finitude Anamnesis Anamnesis means remembrance or reminiscence, the collection and re- collection of what has been lost, forgotten, or effaced. It is therefore a matter of the very old, of what has made us who we are. But anamnesis is also a work that transforms its subject, always producing something new. To recollect the old, to produce the new: that is the task of Anamnesis. a re.press series Aesthetics After Finitude Baylee Brits, Prudence Gibson and Amy Ireland, editors re.press Melbourne 2016 re.press PO Box 40, Prahran, 3181, Melbourne, Australia http://www.re-press.org © the individual contributors and re.press 2016 This work is ‘Open Access’, published under a creative commons license which means that you are free to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work as long as you clearly attribute the work to the authors, that you do not use this work for any commercial gain in any form whatso- ever and that you in no way alter, transform or build on the work outside of its use in normal aca- demic scholarship without express permission of the author (or their executors) and the publisher of this volume. Autonomy, Ontology and the Ideal: Music Theory and Philosophical Aesthetics in Early Nineteenth-Century German Thought Ian D. Biddle NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY 095 50649 4 --MesIs 1-6516 Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, July 1995. Autonomy, Ontology and the Ideal: Music Theory and Philosophical Aesthetics in Early Nineteenth-Century German Thought Abstract This thesis falls into two distinct parts. The first gives an account of the economic and social factors which contributed to the emergence of the new post- Cartesian world order in early nineteenth-century Germany and attempts to ground the German response to the French theories of mimesis in this broader context. The second, larger, part engages in an analysis of the philosophical aesthetics of the critic and writer Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder, and the Idealists Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, paying particular attention to the notions of musical closure embedded in the their usage or intimation of the terms autonomy, ontology and the ideal. To this end, this thesis attempts to analyse the relationship between the organic structures of early nineteenth-century Naturphilosophie and aesthetic approaches to music from that same period. • Constant Van De Wall, a European–Javanese Composer
CHAPTER SEVEN CONSTANT VAN DE WALL, A EUROPEAN–JAVANESE COMPOSER Henk Mak van Dijk [English translation by Wim Tigges] When starting my research on the lives and works of Dutch composers in 2004, in collaboration with the Nederlands Muziek Instituut, I had no idea that so much unknown yet extraordinary music was to be uncovered. Here were compositions in which a Western, romantic or impressionistic idiom were, to a greater or lesser extent, mixed with elements of the music indigenous to the then Dutch East Indies: Indisch classical music.1 These pieces were written from the beginning of the twentieth century onwards by a small group of Dutch composers who were either born and bred in the Indies, or else had lived or worked there for some time: Constant van de Wall (in Surabaya and Batavia), Paul Seelig (Bandung), Linda Ban- dara (Bandarrejo and Yogyakarta), Berta Tideman-Wijers (Batak), Hector Marinus (Deli), Theo Smit Sibinga (East Java), Frans Wiemans (Bandung), Dirk Fock (Batavia), and Fred Belloni (Bandung).2 They felt connected with Europe as well as with the Indies: on the one hand they were rooted in a Western musical tradition and participated in the Western musical world, on the other hand for new ways of composing and were inspired by indigenous culture, which included gamelan music, wayang (shadow- play), dance, Indisch opera and kroncong (a small guitar), classical Java- nese poetic forms and Malay quatrains (pantun). Certainly, they were not unique in paying attention to oriental music, but their specific interest in music from the Indisch archipelago was shared with, at most, a handful of 1 Indisch is a specifically Dutch term, commonly but often confusingly applied.

  • The Creation of the Child in Comparative Children's Literature
Thresholds and reconnections: the creation of the child in comparative children’s literature by Julie M. Roy A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Julie M. Roy All Rights Reserved Baltimore, Maryland April 2015 Dissertation Abstract: Thresholds and reconnections: the creation of the child in comparative children’s literature This dissertation follows the history of children’s literature (of the French and English languages) to draw a portrait of the psychological and educational repercussions it has on the audience it mobilizes. The assumption held that fiction created by adults for children gives a mirror image of – or an insight on – life may not obtain for children’s literature. The genre abounds with paradoxes – written by outsiders for beings that are often depicted as separate or other, encouraging children to live their childhood fully while teaching them the means to outgrow it, aiming to be both representative and generative, etc. – that raise the question of the genesis of the fictional child and its use. If childhood itself is a fiction, can the narrative analogies offered by the young protagonists be taken as serious tools to widen our knowledge of the child? With the support of interviews from authors and an inquiry conducted with editors of the genre, this dissertation reflects on children’s literature and questions the validity of its dualistic or simplifying nature to not only confront what being a child entails, but also what it means to be an adult. Under the direction of Dr. Jacques Neefs, Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures, and Dr.
