Santa Clausas a baby, is found in the Forest of Burzee by Ak, the Master Woodsman of the World a supreme immortaland placed in the care of the lioness Shiegra; but thereupon adopted by the Wood NymphNecile. Upon reaching young adulthood, Claus is introduced by Ak to human society, wherein he sees warbrutalitypovertychild neglectand child abuse. Because he cannot reside in Burzee as an adult, he settles in the nearby Laughing Valley of Hohaho, where the immortals regularly assist him, and Necile gives him a little cat named Blinky. In the Laughing Valley, Claus becomes known for kindness toward children. On The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus occasion, his neighbors' son Weekum visits him; and Claus having made an image of Blinky to pass the time, presents him with the finished carving, calling it a "toy". Soon, the immortals begin assisting him in the production of other carvings: the Ryls coloring the toys with their infinite paint pots the first toy was not colored. When he makes a clay figure reminiscent of Necile, he proclaims it a "dolly" to evade naming Necile to the children " doll " results when children shorten the name. Claus presents the first one to Bessie Blithesome, a local noblewoman, after consulting with Necile and the Queen of the Fairies about whether he should give toys to wealthy children. Later dolls resemble Bessie herself; and later still, counterfeit infant girls. The Awgwas, evil beings who can turn invisible, steal the toys that Claus is giving to the children, because the toys are preventing the children from misbehaving. This leads to Claus making his journeys by night and descending through chimneys when he is unable to enter the locked doors. The Awgwas nonetheless prevent so many of Claus's deliveries that Ak declares war upon them. With the aid of Asiatic DragonsThree-Eyed Giants of TataryGoozzle- Goblinsand Black Demons from Patalonia, the Awgwas believe their might superior to that of the immortals; but they and their allies are destroyed. Claus is not present for any of the battle. When it is concluded, Ak tells him simply, "The Awgwas have perished". As his journeys continue, Claus is aided by two deer named Glossie and Flossie, who pull his sleigh full of toys. With their aid, he reaches the dominions of the Gnome Kingwho wants toys for his children, but trades a string of sleigh bells for each toy given by The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. In restriction of the deer's service to a single day annually, their supervisor Wil Knook decides upon Christmas Evetwo weeks away from the hearing, believing this will mean a year without taking the reindeer from their homes; but the Fairies retrieve the toys The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus Awgwas stole and bring them to Claus, allowing Claus's first Christmas to The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus in spite of Wil. As Claus continues giving gifts, he earns the title "Santa" " Saint " in most Romance languages. Claus sees stockings placed by the fire to dry as a good place for his surprises; but when he finds a family sometimes taken to be Native Americansor caricatures of the same living in a tent with no fireplaces, he places the gifts The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus the branches of the trees just outside the tent. After much debate, he is granted immortality just as the Spirit of Death comes for him. Baum's short follow-up, " A Kidnapped Santa Claus ", further develops his relationship with his deputies, who must work in his place when Claus is captured by five Daemons. Later, children's parents and various toy-making companies take part in gift-giving, and Santa Claus withdraws to his valley. A graphic novel adaptation of the story was published by Tundra Publishing Ltd. An animated movie was created by Rankin-Bass and was their last Animagic, or stop-motionspecial infollowed by another animated version of Baum's book made by Mike Young Productions and directed by Glen Hill in In addition, Shiegra accompanies Claus to the Laughing Valley, in which, unlike the book, it is always Winter. The biggest change is the transformation of Wisk into a Brian Froud -designed long-tailed Pixie Carlos Alazraquiintroduced early in the film and The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus as comic relief. He suggests the name "Necileloclaus", that Ak, narrating the story, changes to "Nicholas", rather than Baum's "Neclaus". A significant thematic change is Nicholas spreading information about the immortals far and wide, to the point he never coins the term "dolly", just mass-produces "Neciles". Dixie Carter portrayed Necile and Hal Holbrook played Ak, who chooses Christmas as the day of Claus's yearly rides for its significance, much to the delight of Wil Knook, for the same reasoning as in the book. Long ago in the Forest of Burzeea council meeting is held where the Great Ak tells the story of Santa Claus to the leaders of the Immortals, hoping to persuade them to grant Claus immortality. About 60 years earlier, the Great Ak finds an abandoned baby in the snowy woods on the border of the Forest. He gives it to the lioness Shiegra to raise. However, after hearing about the discovery of the infant, Necile, a Wood Nymph, steals him from Shiegra and goes to the Great Ak, begging him to let her raise the child. After initial concern that a human was brought into the Forest which is against the law, the Great Ak allows Necile to raise the child while Shiegra stays The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus protect them. Necile names the child "Claus". When Claus has The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus to be a young man, the Great Ak takes him to see the mortal world and its cruelty and suffering. Claus learns that he must live there and make it better. As he gets older, he works to bring happiness to children in a nearby village. He eventually makes toys the first being a wooden black cat modeled after the kitten Blinky that Necile sent to them, which he gives to the orphan boy Weekum. Meanwhile, evil creatures called the Awgwas who influence children to do bad things and who are led by King Awgwa are not happy with Claus's efforts to bring happiness to children, so they attempt to stop Claus from making and delivering toys. At first, they send a warning to Claus, telling him to stop or they would come for him. After Claus ignores the warning, the Awgwas kidnap him, but he calls for aid from the Knooks, who help him escape. As he and his friends make attempts to deliver toys to the village, the Awgwas repeatedly ambush them and steal the toys. Claus tries to go alone by night, but he is again ambushed. The Great Ak has had enough of this and summons King Awgwa and his followers to come and face him. King Awgwa defies the Great Ak's demand that he stop interfering with Claus's efforts and declares war on the The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. Later, the Great Ak and some other Immortals face off against the Awgwas and some monstrous friends that they brought. The monsters attack the Immortals, but the Immortals defeat them. The Immortals then charge toward the Awgwas, who flee in fear. Afterwards, the Great Ak informs Claus that he can resume his toy delivering without fear of interference, because the Awgwas "have perished". Claus and his friends prepare a sleigh to deliver toys to the village, but it is The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus heavy for them to pull. Peter Knook comes up with the idea of hitching reindeer from the Forest to the sleigh in order to pull it. Claus travels across the valley in his sleigh along with Tingler and Shiegra. The sleigh makes multiple large leaps which Tingler says is like flying. Claus claims that he now knows why the valley is named the way it is, as he laughs in a "ho ho ho" manner. When he makes his first stop, he finds that the door of the house is locked since it is night, so he enters through the chimney. Once inside, he finds that the children's stockings were hung by the fireplace to dry, so he decides to put The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus toys in them while placing larger toys elsewhere. Once Claus returns, Peter Knook informs him that he can only use the reindeer once a year on Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is only ten days away, so he will not have time to make enough toys. In order for Claus to have enough gifts, Peter Knook finds and retrieves the toys stolen by the Awgwas. Claus sets out on his first of many Christmas Eve sleigh rides. As Claus nears the end of his life, he suggests that his friends remember him by decorating a tree every year. To justify it, he tells the story of Santa Claus. The Ak found an abandoned baby and gave it to a lioness and a fairy to raise, who named him Claus. When Claus grew up, the Great Ak showed him the evil and hardship in the world, so Claus decides to live there and relieve some of the suffering. He decides to make toys for orphans, but King Agua, the ruler of the valley where Claus lives, doesn't want the children to be happy, resulting in a great battle The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus the Immortals. Written by Kathy Li. Apologies for the Billy Joel reference in the title but The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus couldn't help myself. They certainly go out on a creative note here. This is one of their most different and interesting specials. Obviously influenced by the popularity of fantasy material in the '80s. Everywhere you looked you saw stuff with magical creatures or The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus or enchanted realms. Oh and, of course, The Last Unicorn. This special here was based off of a book by L. Frank Baum, the creator of Wizard of Oz. It's a fairly involved plot for a Christmas special. A council of immortal beings must decide if Santa Claus should be given immortality. From here, we get the origin of Santa, as told by the Great Ak. This is pretty trippy stuff but also very fun. It's some of their most creative work and it's just a shame it came at the end. The The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus is imaginative and interesting. It's dark in places and certainly isn't the toddler-friendly specials of before. The voicework is terrific and the characters are enjoyable. The music is nice, though not their best. As with all Rankin-Bass specials, I of course recommend it. But I would give a special recommendation for this one to people who are fans of fantasy stories but perhaps don't normally watch Rankin-Bass specials. Looking for some great streaming picks?
