Newsletter 2012-19 May 11, 2012 MOST INCUMBENTS RETAIN SEATS IN PRIMARY ELECTION Turnout was light for Tuesday’s Primary Election as voters in West Virginia’s returned most incumbent legislators to office. An exception is Senator Richard Browning, D-Wyoming, who lost to current House of Delegates member Daniel Hall, also D-Wyoming. The two-term delegate won by a 51-49 percent margin. Delegate Joe Talbott, D-Webster, lost to long-time Webster County Assessor Dana Lynch. Even though most every incumbent won, the House of Delegates will have a different make up next session as nearly 20 veteran delegates chose to not run for re-election or ran for other offices. Most of the Senate races in November will feature incumbents, except for the 4th Senate District which will pit current House member Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, against Mike Bright, and the 8th Senate District which includes Democrat Joshua Martin and Republican Chris Walters. Of the 16 Senate candidates endorsed by HUB/PAC, 15 won their primary races. In the House, all but nine of the 77 candidates endorsed by HUB/PAC won their primary election. A notable exception is CAWV member John Casey who ran a good race and came within 150 votes of winning in the new 14th House District of Mason County. “I thank every member who contributed to HUB/PAC,” said CAWV President Gene Thompson. “It is important to elect senators and delegates who will make sure the CAWV’s voice is heard in the Legislature. Your continued support of our efforts is critical for the upcoming General Election,” he said. The Governor and Senate races will be a return engagement of last year’s special elections. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin will face off in November against Bill Maloney. Senator Joe Manchin will be running again against John Raese. West Virginia’s current Representatives David McKinley, Shelley Moore Capito and Nick Rahall will face new challengers in the general election. Supreme Court Justice Robin Davis was the top vote getter in the Supreme Court race. She will be joined by Letitia “Tish” Chafin who finished a strong second to complete the Democratic ticket for the high court in the fall. They will face GOP candidates John Yoder and Allen Loughry.
