MS 0837, the George Washington University American Architecture and Historic Preservation Graduate Research Papers Collection 801 K Street NW Washington, D.C. 20001 www.DCHistory.org SPECIAL COLLECTIONS FINDING AID Title: MS 0837, The George Washington University American Architecture and Historic Preservation Graduate research papers collection. Processors: Anne McDonough, Susan Philpott, Jessica Richardson Date: July 2015 [Finding Aid last updated October 2015] Scope and Content Note: The collection comprises unpublished research papers in the field of Washington, D.C. architecture and historic preservation, completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduate courses under Professor Richard Longstreth at The George Washington University. While the specifics of the courses changed over the decades, the assignment generally called for students to select a property in the metropolitan area, research the property's design, architect/builder, client(s), function(s), materials, construction, urban context, and morphological developments; and write a 10-15 page report with a detailed descriptive analysis of the property's physical characteristics (original and subsequent, both of exterior and interior) as well as an analytical discussion of the property's historical significance. Reports were often required to include at least four photographs (general views, details, and context) taken by the student, as well as at least one site and/or floor plan. Other assignments included papers covering the development of a building or landscape type; characteristics of architecture, landscape architecture or planning in a region or community during a specified time period; the work of an architect, landscape architect, planner, or master builder; the development of a building technology or material; a detailed analysis of a single building, landscape design, or plan; or the development of a community, district, or campus. In a famous letter from Abigail to her husband on March 31, 1776, she wrote: “I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could. DATE September 2019 VOLUME 11,000 CY HIGHLY FRICTIONAL • NON-LEACHING • ROT-RESISTANT • NON-FLAMMABLE • DURABLE • SAFE • The new South Capitol Bridge, also known as the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, is a key link for Washington DC over the Anacostia River as it handles commuter traffic travelling between the city and Prince George’s County, Maryland, and from Southern Maryland. • The $441 million USD design-build contract is the biggest infrastructure project handled by DDOT to date. Also included in the project is the rebuilding and reconfiguring of the Suitland Parkway/I-295 interchange, as well as two new interchanges at either end of the bridge. • Two large, old sewer lines (over 9 ft wide) near the south interchange were a design challenge that was addressed using UL- FGA. The utility company considers these old and fragile sewers critical pieces of infrastructure. • UL-FGA was used to raise the grade for the new interchange to minimizing surcharge on the critical sewers and the surrounding soft soils.
