  • Finalists Release FINAL
For immediate release And the finalists are . Sport Nova Scotia announces Ricoh Sport Award Finalists Halifax, NS (May 24, 2016) – National greats, provincial record-smashers and homegrown international champions were highlighted today, as Sport Nova Scotia announced the names of the finalists for the 2016 Ricoh Sport Awards. “We have an exciting group of finalists to highlight this year,” said Jamie Ferguson, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia. “Among them, we have a fourteen-year-old soccer phenom, a crowd-thrilling basketball team that ended a nearly 30-year drought, a Parapan Am Games gold medalist, and an Olympic veteran who is favoured to be on the podium in Rio. There are stories of obstacles for the best junior curlers on the planet, a soccer official who is one of only four female referees in Canada appointed to the FIFA referee list, and a 32 year-old top national gymnast who is only getting better with age.” The Ricoh Sport Awards recognize the achievements of Nova Scotia’s greatest athletes, teams, coaches, officials, and volunteers in amateur sport over the past year. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Ricoh’s title sponsorship. “Each of these nominees has already been selected by their provincial sport organization as the best in their sport. They have then come through a rigorous selection process where they are judged against the best from numerous other sports, and emerged on top,” says Ferguson. “They are the types of people who inspire us and, through their leadership, help build our sport system. Nova Scotians can be very proud of this group.” Over 180 selections were submitted by Provincial Sport Organizations.

  • LABOUR's CULTURAL IMPACT on the COMMUNITY* a Cape
LABOUR’S CULTURAL IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY* A Cape Breton Perspective JOHN C. O’DONNELL I believe there are many instances where labour exerts a cultural impact on the community, but in industrial Cape Breton where singing and music-making are still a part of every household and an integral fam ily experience, this impact can be felt even by a casual visitor. My own experience has evolved as a result of my long association with a group of singing coalminers on the island known as The Men of the Deeps.1 Because of my work with, and my respect for, these outstanding human beings, I have cultivated an interest in industrial and labour songs and their impact on the industrial communities of Cape Breton Island. Drawing on my experience as musical director of The Men of the Deeps for most of the past twenty years, I would like to demonstrate two ways in which this unique group has made a cultural impact on the com munity. First, by performing in concert songs which have circulated in the labour community for many years, the group serves as a vehicle to perpetuate traditional folksong. Secondly, the very existence of an organized choir of coalminers has inspired the creation of new songs about our mining heritage which have contributed significantly to the cul tural mosaic of the island. In addition to a rigorous touring schedule, during the summer months The Men of the Deeps performs almost weekly at the Miner’s Museum in Glace Bay.2 It is here that much of the group’s cultural impact is felt.

  • Towards a Collection of Coal Mining Songs in Canada
TOWARDS A COLLECTION OF COAL MINING SONGS IN CANADA JOHN C. O’DONNELL My interest in songs of Canada’s coal mining industry began in 1966 when I was asked to conduct the newly formed Cape Breton coal-miners’ choir now known as The Men of the Deeps.1 Although I began to compile my collection at that time, my search for Canadian coal-mining songs was interrupted for a few years while I pursued further graduate studies. My Journey towards a collection of coal mining songs in Canada began in earnest around 1973. The following list is selective and does not pretend to include all songs relating to the coal-mining industry in Canada. It contains no songs in French or Gaelic, for example, although I know of several coal-mining songs in both languages and plan to expand that aspect of my collection in a future publication. Because I have excluded French mining songs from this list, I have not included any by le chanteur-minuer du Québec, Réal Benoit,2 albeit any serious publication of coal-mining songs in Canada undoubtedly will include some of his compositions. I have deliberately chosen to exclude many fine songs which relate specifically to other forms of mining (e.g., gold, hard rock, or cobalt), while I have included a number which refer only casually to coal mining or coal miners. The list also includes some songs which can be identified with more than one type of mining. With the exception of the final category, all songs in the collection were composed by or contributed by Canadian song writers, singers, or collectors.
