Since 1963, when the Sisters of Divine Providence founded La Roche as a college from the President for women religious, we have conferred degrees upon nearly 12,000 graduates and have a current enrollment of 1,465, including 272 international students. Much has changed on campus over those 50 years. We are co-educational, with modern on-campus housing. The college’s first building, the Wright Library, has been renovated and remains a great resource center for both the campus and local communities. Our classroom buildings boast state-of-the-art technology. The Magdalen Chapel and our Campus Ministry programs are the heart of campus spiritual life and humanitarian volunteer efforts. The Kerr Fitness Center’s Scott Lang Court and the John Arnold Sr. Memorial Field routinely produce championship basketball and baseball teams. And the Zappala College Center is always bustling with formal and informal gatherings of students, faculty, staff and community groups. La Roche continues to receive national recognition for its quality academic and student-life programs, as well as for its commitment to global education. Recently, the Open Doors Report, published annually by the Institute of International Education, named La Roche to this year’s list of top 25 baccalaureate colleges hosting international students. International students from 36 different countries make up about 20 percent of our current study body. Yes, La Roche has come a long way since its earliest days, but none of this growth would have been possible without the support of our loyal alumni and friends. In fact, La Roche’s alumni are among our greatest blessings and are the true legacy of the College. This special jubilee edition of Connected is dedicated to our alumni and focuses on the newly established La Roche College Distinguished Alumni Circle. As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, we are inducting 50 accomplished graduates as inaugural members of the Circle. The 50 inductees exemplify the fundamental values of La Roche College’s mission of preparing students to be leaders in a constantly changing global society. La Roche is honored to recognize these outstanding graduates who have achieved success in their professional lives and contributed in such meaningful ways to their communities. It is both gratifying and humbling to think that their La Roche education provided a foundation for such impressive accomplishments. I hope you enjoy reading the profiles of the 50 Distinguished Alumni in this edition. I think you will agree that their accomplishments and contributions are inspiring. As the Distinguished Alumni Circle grows with the College in the coming years, it will continue to give testimony to the significant contributions our alumni make to their professions, their communities and to the legacy of La Roche. With pride and humility, we look back at all that our graduates have accomplished. And with great anticipation and a renewed sense of hope, we look forward to our next half century of growth. In carrying out this idea, we have made no dis tinction between the product of the legitimate stage and its more modern counterparts, the screen and radio. The book is divided into three parts or acts. Act 1 contains those activities of Jackson High School that occur in the forenoon; Act 11 includes the program of the afternoon and Act in, that of the evening. School life is a wonderful drama and each who enacts it has his part to play. If, later among the complex and varied activities on life's stage, you find pleasure in referring to this vol ume, it will have served its purpose, and the work we have spent upon it will not have been in vain. Excellence. NO EXCUSES! 68 Ways to Launch Your Journey. NOW. Tom Peters 27 March 2014 1 To John Hetrick Inventor of the auto air bag, 1952 2 This plea for Excellence is a product of Twitter, where I hang out. A lot. Usually, my practice is a comment here and a comment there—driven by ire or whimsy or something I’ve read or observed. But a while back—and for a while—I adopted the habit of going off on a subject for a semi-extended period of time. Many rejoinders and amendments and (oft brilliant) extensions were added by colleagues from all over the globe. There is a lot of bold type and a lot of RED ink and a lot of (red) exclamation marks (!) in what follows. First, because I believe this is important stuff. And second, because I am certain there are no excuses for not cherrypicking one or two items for your T.T.D.N. list. (Things To Do NOW.) Excellence. No Excuses. • 2018 Annual Report
Committee for Economic Development Reasoned Solutions from Business in the Nation’s Interest 2018 Year-in-Review MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, COMMITTEE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (CED) In 1942, President Roosevelt asked American business leaders to help transition America from a wartime to a peacetime economy. In response to that request, the Committee for Economic Development (CED) was founded by a small group of leading business leaders who were concerned with the global economy and its impact on American society. Early efforts by CED resulted in major policy accomplishments including the Marshall Plan and the Bretton Woods Agreement which established both the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). By rebuilding Europe, these programs had a profound impact on the global economy which led to the greatest period of economic expansion across the globe. Over the past seventy-six years, CED has continued to bring together leading business leaders, policy-makers and academics to shape the intersection of business, government and society. More recently, our programs have had a significant impact in identifying the importance of strengthening our educational systems, particularly pre-kindergarten and secondary education. We have also been advocates for campaign finance reform, greater government fiscal responsibility, healthcare transformation, women-in-leadership and a sustainable system of free enterprise. Over this period, what has remained constant is CED’s commitment to business-led, nonpartisan solutions that put the interests of the nation above any corporate or self- interests. CED’s role in providing reasoned solutions in our nation’s interest has never been more urgent. The polarization of our political system, coupled with dangerous attacks on our systems of free enterprise and democratic institutions call for open and civil debate, not a retrenchment from well thought out policy positions.
