ANNUAL REPORT AND YEAR BOOK 1 PRESIDENT’S REPORT THIS is my fifth report as the President of the South Fremantle Football Club and five years on I couldn’t be prouder to be the President of this great club. I often think of previous leaders of this club and wonder whether they were dealing with the same types of issues as we do right now. After a lot of thought I have come to the conclusion that they probably did, as they were driven by the same goals we have today: * We want our club to be financially stable * We want our footballers and our teams to be to successful * We want our club to be an integral part of the Fremantle community The WAFL is in a tough position at present and financial sustainability is what all clubs, including ours, need to concentrate on more than anything else. To do this, we need to focus on the opportunities and benefits the WAFL has to offer over the AFL. We need to promote the fact that the WAFL can provide an affordable great day out for families. Not only is it about fans watching and cheering on their teams, but mums and dads kicking the ball on with their kids during the intervals, fans joining their teams and listening to the coaches at quarter and three quarter-time. Then there are members and non-members joining us during presentations after the game and getting to interact with the players and coaches in a way they could only dream of in the AFL. And all that is accessible for all the family at a cost of about $150, or for only $80 you can join and become a club member giving you access to all of that and plenty more for an entire . At your club, this great day out is available to us every weekend of the football season and by bringing members and people to our club and to all clubs, we are helping the WAFL survive. I have put this plea to you at the top of my report because it’s that important. Together we can help protect our 115-year history and sustain this great club into the future for the sake of our children, our grandchildren and our community. As for the 2013 season, I would like to say I am very proud of our footballers this year. We had a great performance from our reserves led by coach Tony Walters to win the WAFL reserves premiership with a team that will hold our club in great stead for the future. It was another great performance from our colts in 2013 led by dual premiership-winning coach Arthur Maskos. It's because of what Sheila meant to our club we must do everything we can to make sure we have a strong future and all work hard to protect this great club that she put more than 50 years into. To conclude, I would like to thank the many great people that in 2013 helped add another year to the South Fremantle Football Club’s great history. This includes thanks to: * All of our support staff from catering, bar and football * Stuart and all the administration staff * All of our members and supporters * All of our coaches and players * My board, who worry and care so much for our club, I thank you very much on behalf of all people associated with our club for your dedication and passion. * And finally to our club sponsors, who without your contribution we could not exist Haydn Raitt President

FINANCIALS There is no point hiding from it, it’s been one of the toughest years financially in the club’s history. We had a handful of large one-off expenses and a number of those have been in relation to the up-keep of our facilities. We are now confident there will be no financial surprises in 2014 which will finally allow us to significantly improve our financial performance moving forward. In other areas, unfortunately our membership and gate attendances were considerably down in 2013 which hurts our bottom line. We need to rectify this for next year and we are hoping to do a big membership drive in December of this year. We have formed a committee that will look at ways of attracting new members and more people back to the club. Furthermore, we are hoping our on-field performances will improve and we believe if our priority of customer service and professionalism is maintained, people will enjoy our club and our facilities more.

I rang Brian Cook up at Geelong and he gave me Brian Ciccotosto's number. We hit Perth on February 13, 2012 and the club chatted to me the next morning, offered me the job that same day and I started at the club on February 20 and have been here ever since. Two years into the Hasleby era, I think we have made significant changes and progress in the football department. When you think that there is only Kris Miller, Craig White, Reece Adams and Paul Mugambwa from the 2009 premiership side, the turnover in players has been massive. Because of that we have had to bring up young talent underneath and turn them into 30 and 50 game players as quickly as we can to build our next premiership team. on developing senior players and some of them end up being drafted, which is a bonus for them. That's the direction we are I am confident that we are all up for the challenge of seeing it heading in as a footy club. through. Daniel Vidovich continues to do an outstanding job in his Garry Davidson player development role and he is highly regarded within in the Football Operations Manager competition, and that's a bonus for us because our development squads continue to come through with plenty of talent year after year. The future of our younger players coming through thanks to Vido's work will continue to improve even further. In terms of our support staff, Tony Mollica and Peter Matier are both fantastic team managers as is Sue Jones with the colts. Sandy Cuccovia as our property manager is going to leave a big hole to fill and it is becoming incredibly difficult tofind volunteers who are that dedicated to the football club. There are a lot of people who have been at this football club for a long, long time and they are such fine servants, but it presents new challenges when those people decide to pull up stumps and move on to spend more time with their family. It's going to be an increasingly difficult situation to replace some of these people who have been around for so long, and who love the footy club so passionately. The overall outcome for 2013 is that we are excited for the future because we have now blooded some good young players, and that's going to be our future. We will then selectively recruit what we need on top of that. Ashton Hams is one of the best players in the league so having him back with us full-time is a massive boost. I'd like to thank all of the club's support staff for their efforts again throughout the year and the club's Board has shown a good understanding of where we are at in terms of a young playing group that is developing, and their support has been fantastic for the coaching staff and footy department. Personally, I am keen to stick around and help the South Fremantle Football Club climb back up the ladder as well. It was quite an interesting story about how I ended up at the club, but now that I am here I am very keen to stick around. You look at the premiership teams and they often go very well in both reserves and league, and our last premiership was built off our colts and reserves building up, and then the league side cashing in on the talent coming through. Halfway through the year, we were just so-so in the reserves, but those kids who came up through the colts system the last couple of years really showed they could play senior football and will now continue to put a lot of pressure on our league group. The best thing about a lot of depth is that it makes everyone accountable for their performance, and if they don't perform they will find themselves out of the team. Personally, I am absolutely loving the challenge of being a senior our last home game of the season. That was a day where we had coach. I always knew taking over at South Fremantle that it was to fight hard and we came away with the win, and showed some going to be a challenge, but two years on I just can't wait to get really exciting signs for the future not only with Marlon Pickett's stuck into things in 2014. debut, but with what all of our young players showed that day. I feel like we have done a lot of the hard yards over the last Even though there were some highlights and encouraging signs, two years, I've learned a lot about myself as a coach and really the most important things out of the year is that we particularly in getting the vision and game plan right. The biggest continued to build on our plans and playing group that we now art of coaching is then communicating that across to the group, hope can be successful going forward. which is what I have learned the most about the last two years. We've had a new coaching group Throughout 2013, we really got to coaching what we and I've been developing my own game plan, and have been wanted exactly and the players started to adjust to that, and I getting that across to my own coaches and players. Now we aren’t think it showed in the back half of the year and hopefully that going to change too much going into 2014 and we are feeling very now continues, and is built upon in 2014. confident going into next year.

To be part of a WAFL coaching group, you have to really love Paul Hasleby footy. It takes a lot of time away from your family so I'm really pleased with the group we had. I really thank Scott Thornton for Senior Coach his contribution to our footy club the last two years as a coach and before that as a player. Patrick Bowden in his first year was outstanding marshalling the defence and he is going to be a very good coach one day in his own right, so I learned a lot from him. Michelle Cowan brought a different expertise to the group as well and we will keep adding to our coaching group, but we think we are giving our players the best chance to learn the way we want to play footy. The addition of Mike Vegar as our strength and conditioning coach was a big signing for our club as well and it has allowed us to do things that we don’t believe any other WAFL club is doing in terms of getting our players right physically, and that's only going to continue to bring benefits going forward. To also have 'Wilbur' Tony Walters win a premiership in the reserves suggests that we are doing some things right, and we do have some good depth. His support across the year was very good and I congratulate him and all his team on their premiership.
