Race/Event Reports Missoula All Women’s 5K Run on Diva Day Divas-- are you getting your shoes, your training, and, of course, your outfit ready for this year's Missoula All Women's 5K Run? The race is at 9:30am on October 8 with a party, fashion show, and awards until noon. All at the Community Medical Center Campus. The race will be as much fun as always... stretching, dancing, chocolates, massage, kid’s activities-- and the 5K run. You'll find all the info you need to know when you register via Active registration. Run Wild Missoula site (has link to active or has a Paper registration to mail in), Brochures at Runner's Edge, Women's Club, Peak Health and Wellness and Alpine Physical Therapy, YMCA, and other spots around town.. SHIRT SIZES... We have ordered "up" a size this year. Last year the shirts were pretty small and we ran out of the larger sizes. We hope we got it right this year, and have some other item available for those who find the XXL just won't do. So remember how it went last year and order a size up. We place our order well before the main registration numbers come in. We try our best to accommodate all of you, and priority goes to those who have preregistered. COURSE... The first part of the course is still under revision, to avoid any construction at the Campus and to let cars into the small parking lot by the kid’s soccer fields. A new map will be posted on the web before race day and will be at the registration. We may have a bit more grass to run on and a curb to watch out for. SO be aware and alert as you run and listen to any volunteer marshals. 9

CMC's Ava Nichole Breast Health Fund... This year you can donate to the Ava Nichole Fund of the Community Medical Center Foundation. The Ava Nicole fund was established to support the needs of breast health patients during their diagnosis and treatment. For more information contact the Community Medical Center Foundation at 406-327-4141. You can donate when you register. MEN

Pumpkin Run The Pumpkin Run 5K and 400 Meter Kids Event at New Location - Near Osprey Baseball Stadium In an attempt to find a more perfect location for the Run Wild Missoula Pumpkin Run, the event has moved to the Osprey Stadium and the Kim Williams Trail area at the west end of Cregg Lane. Proceeds benefit the Missoula Food Bank. For the second year in a row the Pumpkin Run is a member of the Green Power Missoula Campaign which encourages renewable energy development by Missoulians. The 400 meter event (for people 12 and under) will be held on the river front trail near the Osprey Baseball Stadium. The 5K will be mostly on the riverfront trail and will be a combination of pavement and gravel trails. There are several bridges on this course, so event staff will do their best to the trails clear of trolls and billy goats gruffs. This new location has ample parking for pedestrians, bicycles, pogo sticks and automobiles. If you wish to volunteer for this event, please contact Ben Schmidt at 542-1257. Hope to see you there. ~Ben Schmidt

View From The Back I first explored the BOP idea with pace-mates in the Reston Runners (VA) a decade ago. Several of us were frustrated on group runs because we always fell behind, often felt discouraged, and sometimes got lost. I left Virginia before the idea developed, but the seed was planted in the back of my mind. When I joined Run Wild Missoula, I recognized a pattern: behind, discouraged, and lost on group runs. I met others with similar experiences. The seed sprouted and began to grow. About six months ago, the Back of the Pack (BOP) first gathered at the Runner’s Edge for a meet-and-greet. A blizzard was raging, and the city fathers had closed the streets. With the intrepid independence of runners everywhere, some of us came out anyway. A month later, we did it again (without a blizzard) and more people attended. The BOP was on its way. If we fast-forward to the present, we can see how far the BOP has come in just six months:  We have a Run Wild Missoula e-mail list with 92 names.  We publish an e-newsletter (BOP Bulletin), and updates (BOP Postcards).  We have a webpage on Run Wild Missoula’s website: http://www.runwildmissoula.org/index.php/ID/2efe20c3/item/Back-of-the- Pack/fuseaction/rwm.clubActivities.htm  We have held monthly social runs in April, May, June, July, and August. The next one is tentatively scheduled for September 23 (watch for details).  We have co-sponsored, produced, and are distributing free BOP bandannas for easy identification and buddy-finding at larger running events. 10

 We have a visible presence at the monthly beer run.  We write a monthly BOP article for the RWM blog on the Make it Missoula website.  We have this monthly column, ‚View from the Back‛ (written by different BOPers).  We have developed an initial Buddy Locator database to connect pace-mates with similar running schedules and neighborhoods.  We organized BOP cheerleaders who welcomed and celebrated the accomplishments of 5:30-plus finishers in the Missoula Marathon.  We have been on TV! KPAX covered the BOP social run in Bonner August 14.  We presented Jeff and Barbara Galloway with BOP bandannas and welcomed them into the group. They were honored by the gesture. Runners, run-walk-runners, and walkers at the Back of the Pack need not be alone, discouraged, or lost when they join Run Wild Missoula for a group event. We have a way to meet one another, to connect with buddies, and to recognize pace-mates in a crowd. If you resonate with this group, and are not yet on ‚the list,‛ e-mail [email protected]. ~Pam Gardiner, Leader of the Back

I roll into the aid station feeling good. The kind of good that you know won’t last forever but you wish it would. Kelly welcomes me with a big smile. I start dumping trash grabbing food and taking layers off. The day is warming up (finally!) I walk out with Dakota Jones, one of my favorite people to spend time with on the trail. We chat for a while and dodge traffic together before climbing out of town towards Bertone Refuge. Into the high country again. Hikers along the trail cheering. Small farms tucked into valleys more stunning than most of our national parks. Cow herds peacefully grazing and ringing their bells, albeit a little less eagerly than the crowds in town. The running herd has thinned out at this point and I’m enjoying the time on the trail by myself. When I pass other runners, we smile and nod to one another, never sure which language the other speaks. The sense of camaraderie was ever present though and maybe even more acute without words. The eventual Women’s winner Lizzy Hawker is the next character to enter our story. I caught up to her around 85k and we leap frogged for a few Mont Blanc hours down the trail from that point. It was an honor to witness her graceful

power on such a steep course. She seemed to hold the gas down constantly and

keep it there. At one point around mile 60 we were visited by a film crew in a

helicopter. It stayed with us for about ten minutes, and at one point hovered no

more than 15ft off the ground and 40yds behind us filming. The prop wash blowing dust up on the back of my legs, the whir of the motor, the beauty of the glaciers across the valley. Lizzy and I were both damn tired but the moment unleashed a potent mixture of adrenaline and vanity and we both started running hard up the hill!!! At Arnuva (95k) I feel tired and my left achilles and right patellar tendon are both working harder than I’d like to admit to myself. ‚Pain Cave‛, enter stage left. Climb in and get comfortable. You are going to be here for a while! Just eat the right foods, get the calories, focus through to the other side. It will get better, it will get better, it will get better. La Fouly, (110K), I get a GPS in my pack and realize for the first time in the race I must be somewhere towards the front. Meanwhile my crew tells me the course has been changed yet again due to a mud slide taking out one of the aid stations ahead. Taking the news of the course change in stride it sounded like it was shorter course and primarily downhill from here. (I learned later that this was not the case, it in fact got longer and steeper!) So with the idea that I was only 25 miles from the finish I started to push hard down the valley. I’m in Switzerland now and the small villages I pass through look like something out of a Fairy Tale. The children with their rouge aid stations set up along the way like small lemonade stands. Running along side you handing

Mike Foote and race number you water and Coke, yelling ‚America! America!‛ Few things made me smile along the course more than these moments. And then Martigny. (133k’ish) I come down into the sleepiest of all the aid stations. Mike Wolfe is there. We get what we need from our crews (food, water, much needed pep talks.) and the Montana Boys walk out together. We climb for a while and it’s obvious Mike isn’t feeling great. I slowly pull away from him wishing we could roll through the rest of this course together. As Mike fades slowly out of sight behind me I hear the most guttural yell from him. FOOOOOOOTTTTTTIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!! GGGOOOOOOOOO GGEETTT 13

EEMMM‛ MMMMAANNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And this is when I think to myself, I love Mike Wolfe. Meanwhile Kelly is having one of the crazier experiences of her life as well. Armed with her passport, a large duffle filled with contingency gear, and her thumb, she has managed to internationally hitch rides all around Mont Blanc with other teams support crews. Most notably was Mike Wolfe’s crew from The North Face whose driver was an Italian rugby player named Seb, who drove a sporty Audi and had taken professional driving lessons. Needless to say it sounds like he handled the high and windy mountain roads along the route like a champ! Back to the race

Run Wild Missoula Member Profiles

Name: Jaime Troiano Age: 35 Place of birth: Providence, RI Profession: CPA Seasoned or new to the sport: When I was little we lived just a few miles from the start of the Boston marathon and I remember my mom taking me to watch the gun go off and pointing out Bill Rodgers to me. My parents would drag me to local races and make me run the kids fun runs while they did the longer races, and although it seemed like torture at the time, somehow it stuck. I have been running ever since. Next race goal: I am visiting my parents in Florida at the end of November and I just signed up for a half marathon that runs through their neighborhood in Sarasota. Race day just happens to fall on my 36th birthday so a sub-two hour finish would be a really great birthday present< Long Term Goal: To stay healthy and keep running! What keeps you motivated through a difficult run or what keeps you running generally?: I try to remind myself that to run is ALWAYS better than not to run. I have never once come back from a run and regretted that I did it, no matter how hard it was to get through. I have struggled with illness and injury over the last few years and it has really made me grateful for every run that I get to finish. Jamie Troiano Do you have a favorite local run, path or trail? I live and work very close to the river trail so most of runs tend to be along the Clark Fork just because of the convenience factor - but if I need to mix it up and give myself a challenge I have a loop that my dog and I love to run at Blue Mountain. Can’t do without: My Garmin! It is both my best friend and worst enemy. It satisfies my inner control freak but also forces to me to face reality about how fast and far I am really going. Before the Garmin I tended to round up the distance and round down the pace. Add anything else you’d like to include: Just how continually inspired I am by Missoula’s incredible running community and the resources and motivation available to runners. Whether you are a newbie or a veteran, this is a truly great place to be a runner!

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Terry Stekly the newsletter begins a new series on member profiles. We hope that you will enjoy getting to know Run Wild Missoula members and we encourage you to say “hi” to them next time your paths cross.

Run Wild Missoula News Letter from the Executive Director: Thank You, Volunteers Run Wild Missoula has grown in leaps and bounds in the past few years: We now have a few employees, over a dozen races, several successful training programs and over 1,200 members. But one thing is certain: We are still a primarily volunteer-run organization and we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without volunteers. Over 1,000 people volunteer for Run Wild Missoula each year—some for a few hours to work registration or course control at a race while others give hundreds of hours a year to serve on a committee or the board of directors. The Missoula Marathon alone uses 400 volunteers on race day and has a committee of 35 people working year-round to ensure a great event. It’s hard to express gratitude for all of the people who care so much about our running community and give their time to make it what it is. Luckily, volunteer work for Run Wild Missoula is mostly fun and always rewarding. Who doesn’t love watching their fellow runners smile across the finish line or see the work they put into an event or the organization

Join Run Wild Missoula to Celebrate RUN@WORK Day on September 16 Run Wild Missoula will participate in Run@Work day on Friday, September 16 with several organized group runs throughout Missoula. Run@Work Day was created by the Road Runners

16

Club of America (RRCA) six years ago to promote physical activity and healthy living around the country. The goal of Run@Work Day is to encourage adults to get 30-minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work, during lunch, or immediately following work. Run@Work Day also encourages companies to help employees schedule time for physical activity. Incorporating exercise into one’s daily routine can markedly improve one’s overall physical health. The following group runs are planned in Missoula for Friday, September 16 at noon. Unless specified all of the runs/walks will be approximately three miles long. • Front Entrance to Federal Building, 340 N. Pattee St. Run Leader: Chris Everett, 544-6994 or [email protected] • Front lawn of County Courthouse Run Leader: Jennifer Elliot, [email protected] • Bear sculpture at Oval at the University of Montana Run Leader: Jen Sauer, 243-4878 or [email protected] • Rehab Parking Lot, Community Medical Center, 1, 2 & 3 mile courses, water & refreshments available Run Leader: Mike Wilson, 327-4137 or [email protected] • Ecology Project International, 315 South 4th St. East Run Leader: Erin Nuzzo, [email protected] "The RRCA is excited to have Run Wild Missoula involved in our Run@Work Day series of events‛, commented Jean Knaack, executive director of the RRCA. ‚Participation in the 6th Annual Run@Work Day is an important step in raising awareness about the importance of daily physical activity. If adults can lead by example, if companies can encourage healthy living, then together we can combat the national inactivity crisis gripping our nation.‛ A survey conducted by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation in January 2011 found that 85 percent of small companies (10-99 employees) and 76 percent of larger employers (100-2,500) indicated an interest in developing running and walking clubs. Run@Work Day is a great opportunity for our organization to highlight how local running clubs and events can work with area businesses to meet their needs for developing running and walking programs for their employees. For more information about our Run@Work Day event, contact Eva Dunn-Froebig at [email protected] or the group run leaders listed above.

Goodbye Loie Turner Loie Turner always came to meetings and events with a smile on her face and a positive attitude. Loie was a member of the Run Wild Missoula Board of Directors since its inception in 2007. She recently resigned from the board after taking a job in Superior, closer to her home in Tarkio. Loie will continue being involved with the club as co-race director of the Missoula All-Women’s 5K on Diva Day, which is slated for October 8 this year. As a member of the board, Loie saw the club through much growth and transition and provided a business owner’s perspective. (She owned Turner Signs Arts until recently selling to Signs Now.) Loie also gave her time and home to the Women’s Running Camp Retreat last year. Loie, you will be missed on the Run Wild Missoula board, but we are delighted that you will continue to be involved as the Missoula All-Women’s 5K race director. Thank you, Loie.
