Two Generations of Black Duke Football Players MY BROTHER’S KEEPER: Two Generations of Black Duke Football Players A senior thesis presented by Michelle Lynne Staggers in partial fulfillment of the requirements for GRADUATION WITH DISTINCTION in The department of CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY Duke University Durham, North Carolina May 2019 SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE: Dr. Laurie McIntosh — Supervisor Dr. Zoila Airall— 1st Committee Member Anna Dowell, PhD candidate— 2nd Committee Member Abstract The NCAA is a multi-billion dollar industry built on the athletic labor of African American males at predominantly white institutions. This thesis explores Black collective identity through the 1st cohort of African American football players and contemporary football players at Duke University. Utilizing interviews and archival material for the historical aspect, in conjunction with participant-observation for the present time, I look to understand the importance of kin-like bonds for Black male athletes, regardless of the era, in navigating a largely white hegemonic space. I integrate numerous theories such as Marx’s commodity fetishism, identity foreclosure, and fictive kinship to give a thorough analysis of ways in which Black Duke football players face exploitation and prejudice inside of the athletic and academic sphere on campus. My research argues that brotherhood among Black football players held more significance forty-two years ago than it does today. As modern capitalism has restructured the experiences of Black male athletes at big-time sports universities, more attention must be directed to developing and supporting modern Black athletes. 2 Thus, the Young Trustee is first a Trustee, with the primary goal of minding Duke’s best interests, and second, a Board member with the unique undergraduate perspective fresh in mind. Similar to Sanford’s perspective, I believe the Young Trustee’s role is to offer the unique perspective of a current or recently graduated student. A typical Duke student is engrossed in a fundamentally different environment in college and post­college than most Trustees were. This distinctive position allows him or her to offer new insights into various questions that a typical Board member may not have. An ideal Young Trustee understands the complexities of life at Duke and should be able to translate that viewpoint into actionable policy. It is important to note that a Young Trustee is not an advocate of any group or its mission, but rather serves as a representative for the general student body’s issues. He or she must embody a typical Duke student and must have an excellent comprehension of problems that concern the student body.

The language samples indicate common patterns, including his use of tools and symbol together in play. A common thread in the samples is his involvement with high tech tools of futuristic toys. Vygotsky believed the use of tools and signs shared important properties (they both involve mediating activity). He claimed a child's speech was as important as action in attaining goals, and the more complex the action demanded by the situation, the greater the importance of speech in the total operation. Vygotsky emphasized the historically shaped, culturally transmitted psychology of humans. He considered play the primary means of children's cultural development, noting that every function in the child's cultural development appeared on a social, then later, psychological level. Observation of children at a day care center, showed that the child's play involved futuristic adventures that evolved from television, the toy market, and Halloween. It was observed that boys and girls used similar language related to special occasions, but that girls focused on the domestic scene, and boys focused on the external environment.
